Lana is really the sweetest person, she personally takes care of all your needs. She also is known as the best cook on the island, and in my almost 4-year experience of Belize, I'd say she's one of the best cooks I've found here in total. She is very helpful also in arranging local tours, as everybody listens to her. AC, a local boat captian, tried to rip our group off and cheaped out on one snorkeling trip. She talked to him, and the next trip was muuuuch better!
... of her property on the island is ideal, as it is on the calm side of the island. The other side faces the reef, so you have a constant and pretty loud crashing of waves to get used to. Her rooms are small and basic, but clean and the sheets and towels smelled good. As you spend most of the time either in her huge dining room or on the beach/in the water, who needs a luxurious room?
It is true, many complain about the generators on the island, as there is no power line so far out on the reef. But if you have to choose: stinking hot and no generator or nice breeze and fan with the generator noise - what would you choose?
... itself is a tropical dream, snorkeling right off the coast, hammocks aplenty under coconut-palms, conch-shells decorating almost every walk-way! It's a pity that the corals closeby are pretty much ruined, but the variety of fish is really amazing. We even saw a harmless nurse-shark, which always was my dream!
if you look for a low-budget, warm and friendly and authentical experience - with gorgeous food on the side - Lana's on the Reef is it!
The lower rooms are cooler, the upper rooms are quieter. Choose what you prefer. :-)
