“Oasis tucked away in the city of San Jose”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 5, 2014

A special and amazing place to stay. And the perfect place to begin and end you trip. The gardens are very lovely and accessible. There's a big porch in front or places to sit for breakfast, or otherwise, in the back. Our room had a private where we unwound and watched the birds after our travels. It's a beautiful, big wooden house filled with interesting things. It was quieter than some of the places we stayed in the countryside. Plus, Xavier and Pilar made us feel so much at home. And gave us some recommendations for our travel in Costa Rica. We look forward to returning.

Room Tip: Though all the rooms are lovely, we loved having the porch off ours.

We booked our first night from the airport with our daughter and son-in-law after reading glowing reviews of this bed and breakfast. None of us could have imagined how relaxing and lovely a start to our Costa Rican vacation would be! In fact, we were wishing we had come earlier or stayed later to relax in Xavier and Pilar's little paradise! We listened to the sound of birds singing from the balcony and appreciated the warm welcome of our hosts. Breakfast was lovely, the coffee terrific. They were even kind enough to accommodate a dietary request with no trouble. We are looking forward to returning to Costa Rica and plan our first stop at the Casa de las Tias!

Room Tip: The balcony was a delight with the lovely weather, but all of the rooms had character

I returned to Casa de las Tias last week with my family (wife and twin 11 year old boys) after having stayed here 15 years ago. Pilar and Xavier were just as lovely as I remembered. The garden is an oasis from the city filled with beautiful flowers and fruit trees. The trees bounty becomes part of the yummy breakfast served up in the garden. Their coffee is the best I've ever had. The location is ideal as either a jumping off point from the airport or for commuting into San Jose.

Make this place your home base and you will be delighted and surprised. It is close to everything in San Jose without the hustle bustle. Two blocks walk to great restaurants and shopping and yet the birds are louder than the traffic. It is safe and secure and the home is lovely and full of eccentric and homey touches. The gardens are heaven and the breakfast will leave you full and satisfied with tropical fruits, homemade croissants and eggs and bacon for the hearty eaters; Xavier says that their motto is "If you want lunch, we have failed". We live 3 hours drive away and come for major shopping and doctors appointments. Why anyone would want to arrive in Costa Rica and stay in a hermetically-sealed high-rise is beyond me. You rock Pilar and Xavier!

Room Tip: there are only four and depends on how many you want to sleep to a bed/room. I like my special one w...

Thank you for your kind words and for staying with us. Just one little correction: we have five guest rooms. The one you like, our Colombia room with the balcony, has a full bed; the Guatemala Jr. Suite, with a King bed, can include an additional single bed. Then we have the Panama room with two single beds, the Andean room with a Queen bed, and our Chile room, the only one on the first floor, has a King bed and can also include an additional single bed. Each room has its own character and all enjoy a view of the gardens. We look forward to your next visit.

We spent a lovely week at Casa de las Tias, enjoying the gorgeous grounds, the delicious breakfasts, the conversations with interesting guests, and the thoughtfulness of the hosts, Xavier and Pilar. The location is handy to San Jose, the Doka Coffee Plantation, La Paz Waterfall Gardens, the beaches on the Pacific, and the shops, eateries, the MultiSpa, and the MultiPlaza. We enjoyed the services of a wonderful guide, Ana Lucia, a 20-year veteran. Highly recommended!

Room Tip: The Jr. Suite is spacious, but we really enjoyed the front room with the huge balcony.

We found that this was a very attractive place with beautiful grounds, wonderful breakfast, homey rooms. We met really interesting people at breakfast, then had a nice early morning sitting out on the porch. The owners, Xavier and Pilar, could not have been nicer. We recommend this B& B to all.

Room Tip: There is not a fitness center or swimming pool, but there is a beautiful garden.

This beautiful B & B is located perfectly for those wanting to visit San Jose or as a stop-over for those wanting to continue their travels elsewhere after getting off the plane in San Jose. The property is beautifully maintained and Xavier and Pilar are wonderful hosts as well as avid birders who can give you ideas about where to go birding. Our car had been broken into and much stolen, and Xavier was kind enough to let me use his computer to try and get our trip back on track and Pilar was so helpful giving us ideas where to shop to replace our stolen items. They even loaned us binoculars (ours were stolen) so that we could continue birding, which was a big reason we came to Costa Rica. We could not recommend this place highly enough.
