“Noisy back alley!”

We stayed at Casa 69 the night before our flight out of San Jose. First, had I known that CR is so small (and we had an afternoon flight) we would have come straight from Arenal for our flight rather than going to San Jose.

Positives - From what I read Casa 69 is one of the better hotels to stay in? The staff was friendly, but didn't speak much English. Later we met the owner who is very nice and fluent. Breakfast was ok - simple, but ok. There is one decent restaurant within walking distance (unless you want to try the Pizza Hut), though downtown San Jose is a short cab ride away. I can see how staying here before a 6am flight would be a good idea. If you can avoid staying in San Jose though - I recommend it.

Negatives - San Jose aside, Casa 69 is on a back alley in downtown San Jose (don't even dream of finding it without the help of a GPS - but they don't know where it is... so good luck!) Your cabdrivers will have no idea where it is either - but it helps to mention the Nicaraguan Embassy. There is no parking - just parking on the street which made me VERY nervous. Our car was fine, but my nerves were not. Later, we tried to use the safe to put our valuables in, but it was broken and the staff didn't know how to fix it (comforting). We were suffering from some stomach-related illness and spent most of the night in our small and cramped room, which thankfully had cable TV. There's no A/C however, and the windows open to the courtyard and do not have screens! Though we were sick, and it's unreasonable to ask people to be silent at 10pm on a Saturday, I was woken up continuously throughout the night by hotel guests, staff, and loud people on the street. The hotel staff begins work promptly (and loudly) at 5:30am. In the morning we also found a ton of little tiny ants in the bed. After 9 days in CR I had gotten used to them on the floors and walls, but never in my bed!

I usually try to blend in with the locals and really experience my destination, but at the end of our stay in CR I wish we would have saved ourselves the discomfort and either stayed at our previous location, or stayed at one of the major Americanized hotels (the Best Western sounded fantastic) out by the airport rather than at Casa 69.

It looks like the guest was not at our place and confuses us with another B&B.
We are in less than10 minute walking distance of the following restaurants most of which you can find in all Costa Rica Travel Guides: Limoncello, Café Mundo, Olio, Juergens’s, Tin Jo, Don Wang,
La Esquina de Buenos Aires, Nuestra Tierra, Bagelmen’s, Luna de Valencia and Trocadero.
The pedestrian mall downtown is less than ½ of a mile away. If you need a cab for this distance you really should not consider Costa Rica your destination.
We are not on a “back alley” nor in downtown but in a small street with sidewalks between the two largest Avenues in San Jose, Avenida Central and Avenida Segunda close to downtown. Concerning parking , we do offer valet parking for $ 10.00/night. Our B&B is less than 2 years old. Everything is new and we never had a broken safe.
Like the Grand Hotel Costa Rica we do not offer AC as it is unnecessary in San Jose. Daytime temperatures never exceed 80 and at night the temperature is below 70. To my knowledge no hotel in San Jose has screens. Once a month an exterminator sprays all rooms. It can still happen that some critter can get into a room. We never had an ant problem.
Breakfast is offered starting at 7 am. It’s continental breakfast as stated on the web site. I start preparing breakfast never before 6:30 am. Who likes to get up unnecessarily early anyhow.
Our guest appreciate the comfort we deliver at the prices we charge. It shows how little this guest
seems to know about San Jose. He should have stayed at the Best Western. For everybody to know: Our area is safe to walk in the evening and all the above mentioned restaurants as well as San Pedro Mall are safe to walk to in the evening. However the Best Western San Jose is in the middle of the crime ridden red light district with no restaurant around and if you dare to go for a walk chances are you will not make it back.

Panama City

I currently live in Panama and travel through out Central America often. I luckily stumbled across Casa 69 on the internet, made my reservation and was set. I couldn't have been happier with the place. Kurt (the owner) was amazing as well as his staff. There seems to be a rotating staff of about 5 people plus Kurt. One woman was bilingual while the rest of the staff understood English. Everyone was very sweet and attentive. San Jose was very rainy during my stay but when things cleared up I was able to enjoy the art exhibition with cows as the subject by various Costa Rican artists put on by the parks of the city. I did find myself grabbing a couple of dinners at the Pizza Hut which was a stones throw from the hotel since at night San Jose in general isn't a great place to be without a friend. FOR THE PRICE, YOU SIMPLY CAN NOT MISS THIS PLACE. If you're staying in San Jose, Costa Rica and you don't want to pay high hotel prices, stay here. While I was there I met a gay couple from Washington D.C., a family planning there trip to the beaches, and an older married couple who were very sweet to chat with. The place was booked but I never felt like there was an over flow of people. Maybe, it was also because I had the king size bedroom near the roof, so I had tons of privacy. I'm planning to go back to San Jose in October and I'll be staying with Kurt again. & another thing... the continental breakfast is wonderful.

“Great Place to stay”

Casa 69

Jul 31, 2008

My partner and I stayed at Casa 69 for a few nights in July 08.

We could not fault the place. Kurt and his team are extremely welcoming and attentive. The room was spotlessly clean, spacious and well equipped with cable tv, fridge and safe. Breakfast was also very good.

Kurt is a superb host and recommended some excellent places to eat and drink in the city and what to do outside of thr city. He is also rather humorous.

The neighbourhood was safe and a short walk to the main shopping street.

We would have no hesitation whatsoever in recommending Casa 69. We didn't want to leave !

“Charming, but VERY noisy”

Casa 69

The highly positive reviews of the hotel's owner Kurt are all true -- he is charming, most helpful, and he runs a modern, efficient B&B style hotel where the rooms and common areas are kept very clean. The location is just enough out of the center without being too far to walk, and I felt absolutely safe and secure.

What really ruined my experience was the arrangement of the rooms around very small central courtyard that seems designed to reflect noise, combined with the presence of televisions in every room. If you want to hear CNN News up till midnight, which you will do if one single person at the hotel is watching it, then this will be the ideal place for you to stay. I usually prefer a place where I won't need air conditioning (and it's not really needed in San Jose, in my opinion) and here, there are ceiling fans and, but for the hotel's central echo chamber, you'd want to leave your windows open at all times. Until Kurt removes all the televisions from the rooms, I would not consider staying here.

And it is a vast mystery to me why the other reviewers commented about the friendly staff. The lead staffer (aside from the owner, Kurt), a Tico who seems to live on the premises as he was there from early morning till late at night, could not possibly have been more surly from the get-go.

It is always helpful if a guest voices his complaints during the stay, or even better immediately when the problem occurs, to give us a chance to remedy the problem and make everybody feel comfortable instead of complaining after the fact, in this case after returning to Canada.

My own bedroom window goes to the same courtyard and we do enforce our House Rules which state clearly no noise between 10 pm and 8 am.

I was not aware of any noise and we did not receive any complaints about noise from the guest. We ask all guest to be considerate and quiet between 10 pm and 8 am. All rules are enforced by the staff and me.

Our Ricardo, praised by many, disliked by some, does not work here any longer. Granted he could be moody at times and so we parted amicably
and I hired different, even more attentive staff.
One can not please everybody and I think the other 41 reviews speak for themselves.

Our ultimate destination was Mal Pais, but since we couldn't get a local flight that worked with our flight into San Jose, we decided to stay overnight at Casa 69. What a fabulous place. We got in late and Kurt was gracious, even at that hour. Our room was in the other house across the street and was very comfortable, quiet and charming.

We had an early flight the next morning, so we didn't get to explore the neighborhood, but we did have time for breakfast. It was delicious, especially the local breads and fruit. When we were ready to leave, Kurt called us a taxi, gave instructions to the driver and even told us about how much the trip would cost. Overall it was an excellent experience and a great value.
