“what you need in a hostel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 11, 2013

We were only there for one night, but got a pretty good feeling of the place. Its not that close to anything, but taxi's are CHEAP around town. I think one way from the cocacola bus station was 2000 colones (approx $4). The reception hosts were friendly and spoke english; gave us all the pertinent information and offered us a breakfast for an additional $2.50 each. Consisted of eggs, toast, gallo pinto, OJ and coffee. A good portion of food that set us up for the day.

There is a pool area with hammocks, restaurant/ bar and a few couches in the main building within range of wi-fi. I felt very safe there with a locked doorbell entry front gate and secure rooms. Showers were a decent size and had a little temp gauge. You have to be aware that any showers with heat in central america are heated by electricity so DO NOT reach above the shower head. Not everywhere has a sign detailing this. Very important to remember.

Over all a pretty good place to stay and had a chill backpacker vibe. Stayed in a private double with shower down the hall for $15 each. They ask you to book online and give your credit card number but they don't take the money until you get there.

Really enjoyed staying here. Our university group used CRB as a hub in San Jose between trips out to both coasts, La Fortuna, etc. No complaints about the place. Our group particularly liked the chance to meet travelers from around the world and hang out at the bar after a long day of travel.

we stayed in this hostel for two nights in May. The private room was basic but what we really loved was the pool and bar area. The Irish bar man Darragh was a pleasure to talk to and amused us with his story telling and his great cocktail skills. My mojito and cosmopolitan were both delish. We will definetly be coming back on our return to san Jose. The food i have to say was also of a great standard and we tried numerous different dishes. All in all we would thouroughly recommend this little jewel of a hostel.

It is a great Hostel: Clean, Pool, Restaurant, TV Room, Bar, short all you need. It was like a little oasis in the middle of the City. Also the guys from the trip planning were very helpful. Thats why it is a shame that all these good impressions were ruined by this blond reception guy. When I wanted to check out he refused to give me my deposit money although I gave him the key. He argumented without the receipt he couldnt do anything. What a stupid rule is that?? And if such a stupid rule really existed then you have to tell people in advance that they have to show the receipt later. It was only about 4 $ but still made me very angry. That easy to destroy good memories

One of the peculiar aspects of the Costa Rica Backpackers is that it is clearly designed to be a party hostel: there is a large bar and restaurant attached, a second bar near a large, outdoor kitchen, and a large backyard with lots of tables for socializing. It was strange, therefore, how subdued the atmosphere was; the restaurant and bar were empty and only a few had beers at the outdoor bar. I think this might be due to the fact that everyone was either starting or ending their trip, combined with not really knowing the neighborhood. We were lucky to meet a local (belgain) teacher who took us around to a few local spots and it was clear this was a middle-class to upscale neighborhood, despite the lack of glitz and glam from the street. The private room was dark and musty and in the basement, and the common shower was not the cleanest. Still, not a bad value, the staff were friendly and the clientele was a good mix of age and background. Later on in the trip we were told that Pangea is a nicer hostel but in a worse neighborhood, not sure if that's true but it would be worth comparing the two.

I stopped here three times. When I first arrived, passing through, and on my way home. I met some awesome folks a few whom I traveled with to Panama, shared a ride, or ended up meeting in a different location. The staff was awesome, very helpful when planning activities, giving directions, and also chill to hang out with. The showers were a bit cold and run down, restaurant was good and also played live music and had dancing. It could be a little loud for some travelers, tons of hammocks to relax in and huge kitchen to cook and socialize in.

I enjoyed my stay there. The location is good, it is a nice walk to the center of the town. The taxi driver wanted to take us somewhere else and kept telling us that the place is full. This hostel does not pay commission to the taxi drivers so you really have to insist.
