“World class museum”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 26, 2014

the Precolumbian Gold Museum rates as one of the world's great museums. The indigenous people of Costa Rica were excellent crafts people in gold, stone and ceramics. The exhibits are well laid out in a logical sequence with tableaux showing daily life. We particularly appreciated the emphasis on women and on the life of indigenous people today. They are not in a museum, but alive and well and working to maintain their culture and their traditional skills. This gets four stars rather than five because there were no brochures or postcards of the exhibition.

“Very interesting”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 23, 2014

Enjoyed my visit well maintained, interesting displays (including gold objects & Costa Rican currency) and diormas depicting preColumbian life.
Difficult to locate though as below bank and not well sign posted.

“Over-hyped and underwhelming”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 22, 2014

The best part of this museum is the architecture. The entry fee is expensive and the exhibits underwhelming with too much emphasis on the Disney experience.

“Unexpectedly fascinating ... a hidden gem”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 21, 2014

This museum in San Jose is literally hidden ... mostly underground ... and under a bank! But if you find it, you will discover a hidden world of history, wonder, and craftsmanship (craftspersonship these days?) reflected in dioramas and displays of generally small gold objects (smaller that is,than those in King Tut or Aztec/Maya displays) that arr wondrously surprisingly sophisticated in execution. Although i find most museums over-curated, this one offers the right amount of information to tell the long history of the area, and to weave artifacts into the cultural fabric that produced them. If you have time to spend in San Jose, this is definitely a worthwhile place to stop.

“Fascinating museum”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 15, 2014

The "gold museum" has been significantly improved since I last visited about 14 years ago. The exhibits are very well done and beautifully laid out. Great history, interesting artifacts, and some creative variations, such as the exhibit on architectural elements used in Costa Rican currency over the years. Well worth the time and cost.
