“A little of everything for those who generally don't like museums”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 12, 2013

A diverse museum - a little numismatics (coins, bills etc through the costa rican history), a little native gold figures and culture, a little on the cats of CR, a little architecture, and on top a contemporary art exibishion. If you generally don't spend to much time in museums, this is a nice pace to go to have just a little taste of everything! All of the above parts ranged from average to quite OK, well worth a couple of hours.

“Interesting place”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 6, 2013

The museum is located in downtown of San Jose. Its actually more like 3 museums together.
Very nice and interesting collection of coins and paper money as well as pre-Columbian Indian gold artifacts.

Gives some prospective of Indian life prior to Columb.

“De lo mejor de San José/One of the highlights in San José”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 5, 2013

Nice place to visit if you are around the capital (located and in a nice place in the capital.). Small museum so it doesn’t take more than 2 hours, but it is an excellent show of the goldsmithing work done during the pre-Columbian time. Well preserved (very important).
Excelente muestra del arte precolombino, bien preservado (muy importante). Ubicación céntrica y en un lugar bonito de la Capital.

“Interesting...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 2, 2013

The gold museum in downtown San Jose, Costa Rica, is worth visiting. It doesn't have a ton of items on display, so won't knock your socks off in terms of their vast collection.

But after all, this is a small country -- you can't expect the British Museum, not here.

That said, the items that they do have are very interesting, and for those interested in indigenous history in this part of the world, it is worth a look. Most of the items on display are jewelry and religious ornaments from the ancient cultures that inhabited Costa Rica before the arrival of Columbus, though there is also some old Costa Rica coinage on display which is interesting for those interested in more modern history as well.
