The Museo del Oro is part of a three story basement complex accessible by steps down from the Plaza de la Cultura on the side opposite the Gran Hotel Costa Rica. Opening at 9:30 AM on weekdays (closed on weekends) there were also exhibits of stamps, currency, and photographs when we visited--all included in the $6 entry fee. The Museo del Oro, which is entered from the second basement and continues down into the third, is well curated, with English and Spanish explanations. I found the seals used to decorate the skin and the reconstruction of a tomb on the landing between the two floors especially interesting. A small theater continuously shows a filmed re-enactment of the creation of the gold pieces that constitute the bulk of the artifacts. There is a small gift shop on the right as you leave the complex. Back up on the Plaza, the National Theater is also worth a visit.
