“Great way to spend a few hours in San Jose”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 14, 2014

This is a well though-out museum. If you spend a few hours on a self guided tour, you'll walk away with a basic understanding of Costa Rican culture. the only thing I would like to see is more. I feel like there is much more to be told and more possibilities realized at this museum.

“Great adaptive use of old Fort”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 5, 2014

One enters through a butterfly garden, a good emphasis on Costa Rica's environmental emphasis. The extensive collection of pre-Columbian artifacts are well arranged with signage in English as well as Spanish. The contemporary exhibits no longer have English language signage, a reflection of the more Nationalistic times?
The exhibit rooms front on a lovely garden space with interesting artifacts, in particular the amazing stone spheres from the region. Well worth several hours. There gold exhibit is not as extensive as the "gold museum" but you will see a good selection of the types of ornamentation made locally.

“Interesting museum at a great value”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 3, 2014

Housed in the old fort where Costa Rica's military was abolished in 1948, this museum offers a number of interesting historical exhibits and the bonus of a beautiful butterfly garden. Noteworthy exhibits include a pre-Columbian artifact collection and a timeline of the civil war and events leading to the end of the military displayed in a tower where original holding cells, latrines and lookouts are preserved. The organization of some of the exhibits seem a bit out of sequence, but the English translations are good enough to follow and at about US$8 for an adult ticket, this is a great value.
