“Beautiful building full of modern and interesting artwork”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 10, 2013

This museum is away from the main strip but was well worth the walk, especially as it was free. The building itself was beautiful and the artwork and sculptures were displayed extremely well, spilling into the outside space that meant you almost felt you were the only people there. Although a lot of the artist descriptions weren't translated into English, it was still easy to appreciate the work.

“An intimate city museum”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 30, 2013

We enjoyed this small, charming museum at the edge of Parque La Sabana. A changing selection of artists from Costa Rica are featured in an early 20th century building that used to serve as an airport terminal. Worth perusing.

“Overlooked, free, beautiful displays”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 25, 2013

The Costa Rican Art Museum is a great hour's stop --- free, interesting, and well within walking distance from the city center. We visited in March of 2013, when the display was many large wood carvings, beautifully done, including some rather surprising pieces. We walked there on a Sunday, when the Central Avenue was closed and bands were playing. Free food and coffee was being distributed by various companies. The Art Museum is just across the street into Sabana Park. The building used to be the old airport terminal. One room, upstairs, has walls covered with stucco carvings showing the history of Costa Rica to 1940 --- extremely well done and quite interesting. This is not a "blow-you-away mega-museum" for a day's visit; it's a quiet, smaller, interesting hour, not overrun with tourists, just a good experience.

“Great value”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 16, 2013

Best value in town. Admission is free and the art exhibitions are supremely interesting, incorporating not only culture, but a lot of Costa Rican history as well.

“Nice Sunday surprise”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 25, 2013

I was hunting for something to do on Sunday, my first full day in San Jose....the main street was closed and turned into a weekly party with dancing in the streets, kids activities, skateboard and motocross ramps....and at the north end was Sabana Park and the museum of Costa Rican art.
The building itself was the terminal for the old airport and is Costa Rican art in itself....interesting outdoor sculpture garden and upstairs inside is a gallery and old VIP Lounge whose lower walls are covered in a wooden bas relief....stunning!

The exhibits change regularly. Wood sculptures seemed to be the theme when I visited but there were some prints and painting as well. Some English in the signage, but not a lot, which left me straining a bit to understand what I was seeing....a wonderful game! It was a beautiful foil for the party outside....serene and uncrowded here.
