“beautiful hotel with great service in downtown San Jose”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 5, 2014

What a find. My wife and I stayed for four nights in this beautiful, small hotel. Super helpful staff who answered all our questions and provided help quickly whenever we needed it. Charming outside garden and nice restaurant. We had a beautiful, big room, with a balcony and a great view of the mountains around San Jose.

Room Tip: We had, I think, the best room in the hotel, number 12. Huge, with a giant bathroom and a really be...

First night the sheets had to be changed because we found big brown stains on them. Also had trouble with getting hot water until the manager/owner came herself after her staff and I couldn't figure it out. The second and last night here I had asked for an extra little bottle of shampoo since I ran out and was leaving the next morning back home I was denied because they only give one a day to all the rooms.

Over all the hotel is charming and the staff specially Ronny and Erick are amazing but I personally wouldn't stay here again.

Only a twenty minute stroll from the bustling downtown San Jose, Le Bergerac is a clean, friendly, comfortable and quiet location. In addition, it is close to San Pedro and the restaurants and bars of Escalante.

We stayed for two nights in one of the garden rooms.

Note on the cab front: if you call Airport Taxis, then you should get a fixed-price cab ride for $40 (up to 4 people) rather than the $32 per person charged by the hotel.

Room Tip: We had room 25. It has a small garden with table and chairs, but no fridge. Air conditioning is not...

My primary description of this lovely hotel is as an oasis in the city. It is located just slightly outside of San Jose city, but is still within walking distance. Walk twenty minutes up the street, and you'll find a mall where locals shop. Walk twenty minutes down the street, and you'll find the old town center with several scenic parks, the Gold Museum, the New Jade Museum, and National Theater, and other sights. You can walk to and visit all of these places in a leisurely day, and still make it back to the hotel before nightfall.

The hotel itself is truly an oasis. Once you enter the hotel grounds, there is greenery all about, which is frequently visited by hummingbirds. The rooms are clean and comfortable, the beds are soft, and there is always hot water in the shower. Each room even has a small fridge. The hotel's wifi is excellent, no matter which room you're in. I stayed in two different rooms (one at the beginning of my trip, and one at the end), and both were spacious with private balconies that had a table and two chairs. Overall, this hotel felt more like home than I ever expected.

The staff is absolutely superb. They are so helpful! We arrived very early, about 6 a.m., and check in wasn't until 2 p.m., but they managed to get us one out of our two reserved rooms right away. As for our other room, they made sure to clean it as early as possible, and I was able to get in there by 9:30 a.m. They are very friendly, and were able to help us with whatever we needed. We also had to check out very early, 5 a.m., and made sure to have coffee and toast available at that time. The front desk is staffed 24 hours, so 4 a.m. wake up calls are no problem. They also speak English, in case your Spanish is not up to par. Even the wait staff in the restaurant was wonderful.

They can arrange a transport to the airport, but be advised that it costs $32 american either way.

Overall, I would most definitely stay here again if I ever get back to Costa Rica. In my opinion, it is a bargain. The warmth and comfort of this hotel is worth far more than what they charge for it.

Room Tip: I had a room with two king sized beds, and it was very spacious. My friends had a single room with...

We are staying here for 2 weeks for work. This is our second time to lodge in this hotel. We love it -- the staff is wonderful, very nice and accommodating. The restaurant -- Cyrano's -- is also quite nice and the waiter Erick is just great! He enjoys interacting w/the clients and is always in a bubbly mood. He clearly likes his work.
The hotel is located in Los Yoses, which is a nice tranquil area close to mall San Pedro and the barrio Escalante, which is replete with new restaurants catering to healthy eaters, vegetarians, and hip folks. We can easily walk to our work in Zapote and also downtown if we do not wish to ride the buses.
The hotel has different types of rooms but ours is the best: large, with a balcony and a mini-fridge. Other rooms have private gardens and other amenities. We like the balcony -- it overlooks the street and we can see what is happening outside.
All in all, a wonderful place to stay -- not fancy like the Trump Tower in Panamá but homey and comfortable. We prefer this by far!

Room Tip: Either habitación 12 or 14 -- both are good.

My son and I spent several nights at Hotel Le Bergerac. The managers (Arthur and Henry) and their staff are friendly, professional, and very helpful (for example, when we returned to the hotel after a day of white water rafting and needed medication for a sunburn, they located one of the few pharmacies that was still open in the evening, then sent us with an English-speaking cab driver who translated for us when we got there). The hotel itself is an older building with character. We stayed in a superior room with a balcony and a view across the city to the mountains, then in a deluxe room with a patio. We had a great time in Costa Rica and plan to return; when we do, we'll stay at Hotel Le Bergerac while in San Jose.

Spent a week at the hotel. The entire staff bent over backwards to help make the stay enjoyable. The hotel, so I am told, used to be a private estate until it was lost in a card game. The new owner then converted it into a hotel, hence why its location is nestled in the Los Yoses (residential) sector of San Jose instead of downtown.

Bus stops within 200 yards of the front door if you're into public transportation. They'll coordinate taxi service and have transport to/from the airport ($32.00 USD - about standard fare), and gladly coordinate export taxes (another $32) so there is no line when leaving at the airport customs.

The typical (included free) breakfast was fine to get one started: juice/coffee, fruit, toast, rice & beans, eggs. Service was excellent (Luis and Eric).

The front desk staff (Daniel, Jeramy, and Helen) - their "english" names for non-spanish speakers - were professional, courteous, and knowledgable of the city/country and handled all questions with a smile and sincerity. Fluent in English but will gladly tolerate your broken spanish if you're not a native.

Likewise, the management/office staff (Arturo and Henry) expeditiously sent e-mails to coordinate reservations and keep the information flow concise. My wife especially appreciated their efforts.
Even the room maid and gardener had a smile and morning greeting each day.

Couldn't ask for a more considerate staff.

The rooms were clean, and refreshed daily. Not 5 star downtown New York style but not the $400 price tag either. Nice for what you pay for in a city. Only a 60 cent bus ride to downtown (8-10 blocks/ about 3/4 mile). Cabs were easy to get but like in most cities, they'll route you the long way to your destination if you don't call them on their fare-bumping. Street names/numbers only exist at major intersections/roads and not in the residential areas so be forewarned!

Would recommend staying there and if/when I return would book the hotel again.

Le agradecemous que me ayuden ! (Hope that's right Jeramy)
Thanks,
Jeff Main
