We booked here at the last minute, as we decided to spend a night in San Jose at the tail end of our trip to Mal Pais (if you like the beach, you should check this town out). We arrived late (around nine at night) after a very tough time trying to find the place. Be warned, San Jose (or Costa Rica in general, for that matter) does NOT use / have street names. Finding this particular hotel at night, in the rain is EXTREMELY difficult. No one has heard of it, maps are useless, and it is off the main road in a little neighborhood. During the daytime, this quiet location is a plus. At night, in an unfamiliar city, it is near fatal.

That said, the hotel staff was excellent - very friendly, very warm, very helpful. We stayed in one of the suites / deluxe rooms - large room, two big beds, large bathroom and a small, but somewhat charming balcony garden. The room was definitely not first class - very modestly decorated, worn linens, etc. Nothing fancy or extravagent - especially for $140. We were definitely expecting a bit more after the Fodor's & Moon's recommendations and the positive trip advisor reviews. But, it might just be the case that San Jose hotels are not all that nice.

We had a dinner at the restaurant - "one of the best in the city" according to fodor's. Definitely not a great meal for the $100+ dollars that it ran us. Food was only ok. The atmoshpere was average at best. Service was good. The menu was standard French fare. We had breakfast the next morning (free in the rate), and found it to be ok (probably better than our expensive dinner). The hotel is definitely close to downtown though - we caught a cab to the Museo Nacional the next morning for 800 Colones (about $1.50). Pretty good deal there. Also, they have a parking garage with a locked gate - key for our rental car.

Overall, not a bad place, but nothing to write home about. The pictures on the website are very flattering. Not misleading, but definitely paint the place in the BEST LIGHT POSSIBLE. Key suggestion is to arrive early (during the day) if you want any chance of finding the place.

This little publicized hotel continues to get top reviews from almost all who have stayed there and with "Fodors" who have rated it the 4th best hotel in San Jose, despite the star rating.

I have been staying at the Bergerac for over 3 years and continue to return.

The location is wonderful and off the tourist trail in the old part of town called Las Yoses. Americans would probably understand the term "old money". It is where many consulates, embassies, and grand old houses are located.

I can not say enough about the staff, which will do absolutely anything to accommodate you.

The "Tico" (Costa Rican) breakfast is included and included fresh juice and fruit, eggs, cheese, fresh breads, and of course
"pico de gallo", Tico rice and beans.

Just wonderful

Note: They are not opposed to negotiating price, if you are staying for any length of time. I definitely suggest you contact them directly.

“Great for IN and OUT stay.”

The reason i give an above average rate is due to the price, you get what pay, the hotel is clean, staff is nice(too nice sometimes) the beds are just ok. The hotel is very small , the rooms are decent size , upon arrival i found the area to be safe ,keeping in mind that San Jose is not a very safe town. Staying here made me feel like i was staying at someones house instead of a hotel , i must say like staying at a Costa Rican family home. There's no A/C but really not needed , San Jose weather is very nice most of the times. I stayed here one night as i needed to go clubing only for one night in San Jose. This hotel i would stay maybe for a maximum of 2 nights next time if i have to. Keep in mind that for less then $100 a night this is a good choice , specialy if you are going to be IN and Out of there fast! Enjoy ur stay.

We spent the last 2 nights of our 10-day Costa Rica trip in San Jose. My Fodor's book rated this hotel the best in the area, and for the price ($85/night + tax) we decided to stay here. When we arrived late at night, the concierge told us the hotel was full and the last free room was for us. It was about 10 feet from the concierge and faced the entrance of the hotel. The room was simple and clean, but we kept hearing voices outside the hotel room. Very small bathroom.

Besides that, the staff was very helpful and friendly, as we booked a white-water rafting tour through the hotel, and upon our return they inquired about it, asked if we had a good time! The free breakfast was good.

For an under $100/night hotel, this was pretty good.

I had been at this hotel twice before. Once when the previous owners managed it (a canadian lady and her moroccan husband). They were very helpful and knowledgeable of San Jose and Costa Rica as far as advice from restaurants to the difficulties driving in certain areas. The new management made the hotel impersonal, with some staff members at the front desk sort of indifferent to guest's requests. The restaurant has most definitely declined in both quality of food and service, while increasing its prices.
Location is of course good, at Los Yoses. I stayed once in the new rooms, the last in the older part of the hotel, quiet and separated from the main area of reception and restaurant. Cleanliness is fair.
