We booked here at the last minute, as we decided to spend a night in San Jose at the tail end of our trip to Mal Pais (if you like the beach, you should check this town out). We arrived late (around nine at night) after a very tough time trying to find the place. Be warned, San Jose (or Costa Rica in general, for that matter) does NOT use / have street names. Finding this particular hotel at night, in the rain is EXTREMELY difficult. No one has heard of it, maps are useless, and it is off the main road in a little neighborhood. During the daytime, this quiet location is a plus. At night, in an unfamiliar city, it is near fatal.
That said, the hotel staff was excellent - very friendly, very warm, very helpful. We stayed in one of the suites / deluxe rooms - large room, two big beds, large bathroom and a small, but somewhat charming balcony garden. The room was definitely not first class - very modestly decorated, worn linens, etc. Nothing fancy or extravagent - especially for $140. We were definitely expecting a bit more after the Fodor's & Moon's recommendations and the positive trip advisor reviews. But, it might just be the case that San Jose hotels are not all that nice.
We had a dinner at the restaurant - "one of the best in the city" according to fodor's. Definitely not a great meal for the $100+ dollars that it ran us. Food was only ok. The atmoshpere was average at best. Service was good. The menu was standard French fare. We had breakfast the next morning (free in the rate), and found it to be ok (probably better than our expensive dinner). The hotel is definitely close to downtown though - we caught a cab to the Museo Nacional the next morning for 800 Colones (about $1.50). Pretty good deal there. Also, they have a parking garage with a locked gate - key for our rental car.
Overall, not a bad place, but nothing to write home about. The pictures on the website are very flattering. Not misleading, but definitely paint the place in the BEST LIGHT POSSIBLE. Key suggestion is to arrive early (during the day) if you want any chance of finding the place.
