“Might not work for everyone....but it worked for me!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 26, 2012

Don't stay here on your honeymoon...but if you are just spending one or two nights in San Jose before you hit the Costa Rican coast or countryside, you could do worse.

The location is right in the center of San Jose. It's in a good location and you are just steps away from shopping,
restaurants etc. I was able to find a coffee shop nearby and also quickly activate my mobile
phone with the help of local merchants. Of course this convenience means there will be noise, but nothing more than any other
hotel in the area.

The entrance is small, just a little door right off the main promenade. The hostess was friendly and found
my reservation right away. My room was on the fourth floor, and included a king bed, a safe for belongings, cable TV
and a shower with hot water. It was a smoking room, so I did notice some cig burns on the floor and on the table. It didn't
smell though, and it was clean. I slept well.

I was not here to gamble, but the casino seemed okay upon a walkthrough. It is located on the ground floor,
and there was a large room with machines right past the front desk. There is also a pai gow room, but
no poker, no blackjack, and no sportsbook - as is the standard for all San Jose casinos.

There is also a 2nd floor bar/lounge/party room. They also offer a pretty nice breakfast that is included in the price of the room. All in all it

Room Tip: Stay on the 4th or 5th floors, they are quieter.

Having read the reviews on trip advisor our expectations were low when we arrived but were pleasantly suprised by both the customer service we received from the friendly (and mostly bilingual) staff and spacious, clean room. Having requested a room on the top floor when we arrived we escaped the noise from the disco which could clearly be heard from the floor above it. We did get a little noise from the old AC unit and every morning at 7am when the rooms next door were cleaned. That said the service was great and the complimentry breakfast very tasty and decent portions.

On the whole we were impressed and felt we got good value for money.

#1 The Location is great 4 blocks up from the airport bus termimal, Across the street from currency exchange less than a block from central ave and secure ATMs one more block and your at the large central market, About 9 blocks from the Coca cola bus terminal where you can catch a bus to almost anywhere in Costa Rica including Jaco if you 6 blocks up on central avenue is the gold museum and the national theater.
#2 It is an older hotel and it shows but it was suprisingly clean all the cleaning staff were very friendly and very hard workers i saw 3 small cockroches and i stayed a total of 6 days towels were changed daily as were the sheets a large safe in the room and the tv was nice although the reception was poor but who comes to costa rica to watch tv?
#3 there is a casino on the first floor and resturant by day and bar/disco tec by night the first 4 nights I was on the 5th floor near the stairs the music came up the stairs and seemed to shake the whole building sleeping was dificult untill midnight. Friday night i had to go down to see what was going on and found that hotel guests had no cover charge so i went in for a while the next thing i knew some beautiful sexy tica ask me to dance after she invited me to her table where their were already 4 girls I danced all night with diffront girls and was never propositioned just a bunch of ticos out for a dance. if you want to be propsitioned go to Del Rey . fri sat and sunday the dances last until 2 the rooms to the back and along second ave are somewhat less noisy bring ear plugs if you intend to sleep.
#4 breakfast get your ticket at the front desk before you go to the second for breakfast of eggs beans and rice coffee or juice for me it was plenty

I cannot say it enough, this is the worse hotel in San Jose, I taught myself not to go by reviews here just over price, but I have stayed at better hotels at $10 a night that this one would even compare to!!! The breakfast is pathetic, the rooms are pathetic, and they don't even pay their Satellite bill so you have nothing but local channels.

Look I am a fellow US Citizen and trust me I know the quality expected here and this hotel if was rechecked, I would be surprised if it kept 1 star!!!!

Room Tip: Dont stay at this hotel...period

After reading my review, you will wonder why and the world did I ever consider staying at this place. I read reviews that suggested it wasn't bad for the price. In my mind, it isn't worth any price. Top ten reasons to go elsewhere:

1. We were in room 556. There was a sewer gas leak that they wouldn't or couldn't fix. Kept the bathroom door closed, the toilet seat down, and the bathtub drain plugged to limit the smell of a dead dog combined with rotten egg.
2. The air conditioner was sucking in air immediately in front of where a flock of pigeons pooped. It looked like a white mountain. Hopefully we haven't developed Legionnaires decease.
3. There is a live band playing on the second floor. If you put on head sets you might drown the noise.
4. The taxi driver warned me that this might not be the safest place to stay, but I've been downtown before and never had a problem. Naturally there was a fight in the lobby and one guy through another guy out a window. They spent the next day putting in a new front door and window. Then, the next day we watch a guy snatch clothes from a vendor and run. The day after that, they had about 8 to 10 police cars and they were questioning everyone about something, but I had already decided to leave by then--though our room was prepaid and we couldn't get our money back.
5. Breakfast was included :) OK, the choice was rice and beans with coffee, or fruit with coffee. Everything else was extra. And, when I say extra, they charged you heavily for any add ons. Plus, the food was awful.
6. The wait staff was terribly rude.
7. There is a casino on the first floor. The smell of smoke is almost overwhelming.
8. There is free wii fii. This is suppose to be a good news thing, but there is one computer immediately outside of another room. The computer must have been one of the first that has ever come out. The only way you could get the @ sign was to hit alt 64. That took 20 minutes to figure out. Then, it must have been a dial up service, but it took about 1 minute per page (without video).
9. One would think being downtown near the central square is a great location. If you stay there, you'll see (i think it is 2nd avenue) a street blocked off for pedestrians with several shops. Please remember to barter in every store. There is an automatic mark up for any gringo, Canadian or European person. Most of the goods are not marked. They even did this in a Quisnos. We saw a leather jackets at a "boutique" shop which they asked $660 US. My response was, no thinks Lester. We wondered how so many Costa Rican people could have the same leather jacket that was so expensive. So we did a poll and asked several of them (I speak Spanish). They named three different places only a few blocks from the gringo shopping area and one mall about 4 kilometers away. At the end of the day, we bought the same coat for $54.
10. Last but not least, if you are going to do a tour from a tour bus, you are the first they pick up and the last they drop off. We spent a day at Isla de Tortuga. It was a 15 hour day. We could have saved 2 to 3 hours by staying at the Double Tree. Guess where we stayed the last night? Double tree. I give that one 4 starts.

Room Tip: If you insist on staying there, don't pay in advance, check the room and take a deep breath, sta...

I booked this hotel because of a discounted price on Expedia. We paid $39 instead of the regular $60. No way would I recommend this hotel at $60 per night, but for $39 per night, I'd say its a decent value. It was only after booking the hotel and being charged in full that I read all the reviews (my mistake!), and I was pretty scared, but honestly it wasn't that bad.

We only stayed one night, but both receptionists we encountered spoke near perfect English and were friendly and helpful. There is a casino on the first floor, which is loud and definitely attracts some shady characters and undoubtedly women of the night; however, there is a security guard stationed a the elevator and there are security cameras everywhere which made me feel more safe. Luckily we were given a room on the 5th floor (the top floor), so we slept soundly and could not hear the music coming from the casino at all. I'd imaging it would be pretty awful staying on the second or third floor because of the loud music. The biggest plus about this hotel is its location, right in the city center, which means that some of the rooms will be noisy. However on the 5th floor, we could not hear any outside noise.

The rooms look like they were pretty nice 3 star rooms 20 years ago, but today they are pretty beaten up and run down. Our room was pretty spacious and had a king sized bed which is a plus. The room also had a decent television, a big closet, and a table with two chairs. One of the florescent overhead light bulbs was annoyingly flickering in and out, and one of the reading lamps was broken. The bathroom smelled a bit moldy, but was not visibly dirty.

This hotel is certainly not the best. In fact its pretty awful in terms of 3 star hotels. But, if you can get it at a discounted price, its a decent value.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the 5th floor (the top floor) to avoid noise.

I stayed there in October, the rainy season so the price was very low - $40 a night after all fees and taxes. It's a very no-frills place, however, do consider all - you might like this deal a lot.
Cons: sleazy and seedy looking public spaces, un-uniformed staff may not speak enough English to answer your questions, you may encounter roaches in your room, 24hr Casino and possible all night restaurant events may make it too loud to stay on lower floors, no alarm clock in the room - wake up service not very reliable.

Pros: Location is Excellent, very cheap, breakfast included in already low price, I had my own king-size bed, large tv with english language movie channels, bathroom and housekeeping service for the price of a hostel room.

Because i was out on tours most of the day - i wasn't as much concerned with the hotel services but did enjoy the savings. Some lacking services (english speaking staff, tour operator, nice lobby lounge) may be found at the nearby Grand Hotel Costa Rica, that is about 5 min walk. Also, less than 10 min walk to the bus station. If you do not have too much luggage, you can enjoy a less than $1.00 ride to the airport (400 colones) vs $25 cab.

Room Tip: ask for higher floor away from the elevator for less noise.
