It's always iffy to book a place to stay if you are a gay couple. I never met Tina, Michael's wife so the beginning and end of my trip in CR was spent at Raya Vida. We both loved it! The B&B itself is a very lovely place. We had a clean and comfortable suite with an adjoining patio for $100 a night which included a yummy and filling breakfast of coffee, fruit juice, fresh fruit and a typical Costa Rican breakfast called gallo pinto which is a seasoned rice and black bean dish with scrambled eggs. About the toilet, when I travelled in Brazil and Sicily I had to placed used paper into a trash basket so I wasn't too surprised to discover it was also true throughout Costa Rica. If you are uncomfortable with these things, I suggest you stick to visiting Europe or Northern America. Michael was our host and we both felt very comfortable. I was very glad I didn't read any of the reviews that trashed him as a host as he was very welcoming, friendly, generous with his knowledge of local customs and culture as well as places to go. The neighborhood was impressive and has a vibrant youth culture given the 19 colleges and universities in San Jose which offer young people free higher education to citizens. Walking around made us both feel like we want to spend more time there and truly get to know the city.
