“Great neighborhood, good price”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 11, 2013

We stayed here one night, before catching the bus/boat to Tortuguero. Our room was basic but very clean and comfortable. There is a lovely rooftop balcony that is great for birding. The breakfast fare was simple and delicious. The hotel is located in a very pleasant neighborhood just a couple of blocks from the lovely Parque Espana, which is full of shade and colorful birds.

Thank you very much for your nice review. We are glad that you enjoyd your stay, we hope to welcome you back to Costa Rica especialy now we extended our service with our courtyard garden restaurant "El Jardin". It opens in April. The rooms in our hotel are all diffrent, the do have the same standard except for a few upgraded family rooms who are bigger and especialy nice for traveling with family. We keep upgrading and remodeling our rooms for our guests.

Stayed here on 3 separate occasions as part of a group organised tour and had 3 completely different experiences. Was in room 22 on the first night and had an awful night's sleep as the room was so noisy - right by reception, near to breakfast room and on the corner of the road. On the second visit, stayed in a room towards the back - much quieter, cooler and actually really nice. On the final night, had an indifferent experience as the room was quiet but the shower wasn't very powerful and water leaked over the bathroom floor.

In summary, ask for a room away from reception/breakfast area and test the shower before accepting it. Breakfast was good and plentiful and wi-fi signal was strong throughout the 3 rooms I stayed in. Free tea/coffee/water throughout the day and only a short walk to city of San Jose.

I was all ready to give this hotel a not-so-good review after my first night in this hotel because the room was SO noisy and bright, but after dealing with it for many hours, the staff were nice and let me stay in another room for the night. Most of the staff are friendly, although some are not quite as helpful as others. The hotel is very basic, and to be honest for slightly more money (an extra $20) you can get much nicer accommodation in downtown San Jose. Breakfast is basic, but there is endless tea and coffee and you can buy cheap beer behind reception. Staying in a group was decent value for money, but I wouldn't recommend it if travelling alone. The restaurant across the road though is one of the best I went to in San Jose and is a good selling point for this hotel. Another warning is that there is no air conditioning, which is perfectly fine if you are on your own, but makes the room very stuffy with a group of people. But all in all, a good basic hotel if you are transiting through San Jose, and good value for money if you are on a budget for your holiday.

Room Tip: Do not stay in room 22!!!!

We stayed here 1 night during a trip to Mal Pais and coming from Panama by bus. The Hotel is near by the Centre and the Coca cola bus station. The Room was poor for the money we payed .. it was a small room en it smelled humid as well as the pillows. I think it was just a old part of the hotel with some older rooms. The room need to be checked. The tiling came lose from the floor and the TV was from type grandmother.
The staff is really helpful and helped us with the bus program for the next day. The breakfast was good with good coffee en lots of fruit.
Next time we ask for a other room ;-)

We booked for 3 persons: 2 adults and 1 child. Immediate after we requested for information we got a reaction by email. In the end we got a good price for our visit. In our reservation the airport pickup was included. That was a good deal. The rooms were nice, the beds were good and the breakfast was super: bread, fruit, juices, eggs, coffee etc. Everything sufficient. The hotel was a good starting point for the rest of our visit into Costa Rica. In the future we will return.

During our stay in San Jose we were in this hotel. It is good situated, friendly people and enough facilities. The staf speaks perfectly Dutch and English and are well informed about the possibilities in San Jose and Costa Rica.

We stayed several times in this place and the quality of the rooms differed a lot; from acceptable to absolutely poor. In general it is a rather old hotel with some worn down furniture. One of our rooms was very small, had only one light bulb and the bed was placed in a corner where one could not stand beside the bed. The hotel is part of a chain of ‘charming and nature hotels’. Do not expect an air conditioner, a bar or any room service. It is plain bed and acceptable breakfast. If you prefer a more standard hotel: Holiday Inn is only 2 blocks away.

Room Tip: Rooms 22 and 25 are acceptable. (25 is up stairs)

HRSJ, Manager at Hotel Rincon de San Jose, responded to this review, September 21, 2012
Dear Bastian,
Thank you for your comments.
As you staded in your review we are indeed an old hotel, actually we are situated in historical buildings with a colonial style. The 4 old mansions are connected in the 90’s to form a hotel. By breaking through the patios at the backside of the different houses we succeed to transform them into hallways with palm trees growing inside, and to obtain a beautiful courtyard garden.

As you noticed all our rooms are a little different we have smaller standard rooms and bigger family rooms. We have more colonial rooms with wooden floors antique colonial furniture and rooms more contemporary with ceramics on the floor but they do have the same standard, are clean and clear with modern bathrooms, telephone and cable, television, and a fan.
Because of the infrastructure and the connection we made we gained a big tropical garden, at the other hand it can seem sometimes to be a labyrinth which I might say retains its own charm.

We choose not to install a AC system in our hotel because most guests find it hardly necessary in San Jose, where we have an average day temperature of 23-25 Celsius and a average night temperature of 19 degrees Celsius. We made the choice not to install AC also because of our strong believe we need to manage our hotel on a sustainable and green way. Even though we are a city hotel we are certificated as sustainable hotel by the national tourist board of sustainable tourism of Costa Rica (CST)

We are a tree star boutique hotel or family hotel. The Holiday Inn, which you mentioned to be more standard, is actually a 5 star chain hotel! Obvious a small personalized hotel like ours is not comparable at all with a 5 star chain hotel.

In your review you revered to chain of hotels wich we are part of this chain is actually an alliance of colleagues with charming small personalized lodges throughout Costa Rica which we do recommend. Recommendations are isued from our reservation desk who offers to help our guests to plan their trip to Costa Rica by explaining them de do's and dont's of Costa Rica and offering a reservation service for tours, rent a cars, transfers and even hotels.

We are a personalized hotel where the manager and owner is present almost every day.
We strive to do our utmost to improve the hotel, services, and room decorations on a daily base.
We are most sensible to the comments of our guest and try to use them in a constructive way so we can improve. Thank you for your commend we hope you enjoyed Costa Rica.

Warm regards
Jos de Haan
