My daughter and I have just returned from a 2 week trip to Costa Rica. We stayed the last night of our trip in Grano de Oro. Upon our arrival at the hotel, we were told that the deluxe room that we had reserved was not available due to construction. They instead gave us the best room in the hotel--room number 25. I have stayed in the best hotels all over the world, and I have never stayed in a room as beautiful. The room was on the top floor of the hotel, accessible by an outside stairway above the terrace and hot tubs. The room was over 24 feet by 14 feet, furnished with 2 ultrasuede couches, oriental rugs, 7 silk shaded lamps, a large kingsize bed in dark wood, and a wall of windows 24 feet long overlooking the volcanoes and twinkling lights of the city. At the end of the room 3 steps led up to a large jacuzzi, surrounded by tropical plants and large pottery urns. A separate bathroom included a shower, toilet, sink and dressing table. One coffee table held a bromeliad in a planter and a china tea set. There were several dark antique chests and dressers. One at the end of the bed was covered in a small oriental rug. Beautiful camel colored draperies stretched across the windows and also surrounded the jacuzzi for privacy. Other urns of tropical plants were spread throughout the room.
The restaurant was exquisite. Our lunch was superb. Our 3 course dinner with 3 accompanying wines was perfect in every way. The dining room staff and its manager were as professional as you will ever find. This is truly a gem of a hotel. I noticed some of the interior rooms are dark, and if I had stayed in one of those, I would have been truly disappointed. As it turned out, I have now experienced one of the most beautiful rooms in the world.
My husband and I stayed at Grano de Oro on the last night of our Costa Rican vacation in order to avoid doing the long drive from Manuel Antonio on the day of our flight home. The hotel is charming - built in two old mansions - and has lots of twists and turns. Our room was at the top of its own little staircase. The service here was phenomenal and everyone spoke fluent English. Within minutes of check-in, a delicious fruit plate consisting of pineapple, mangoes, etc. arrived at our door. Such a welcome surprise since we hadn't had time to eat. Our room had a bathtub - nice ammenity that we missed at some of the other hotels we stayed in on our trip. I noticed a lot of other little touches around the hotel that made it feel homey - they even had bookshelves of free books for you to read and a note asking you to leave behind books for other travellers. Don't miss the rooftop hot tub/garden area - it's very pretty. The only negative we noticed was that our room did not have air conditioning. As it turned out, it rained during our stay, and we just opened the windows for ventilation. We would definitely stay here again.
My husband and I were on our honeymoon and we stayed in three different parts of Costa Rica over the whole 10 day period. I must say we did enjoy our stay at Grano de Oro very much - especially the food! I didn't find the food in Costa Rica too wonderful and was very thankful for this hotel's amazing food. The room was nice, although the bathroom could have used an update. At the time there was construction going on outside our room but that noise ended at about 6pm. Grano De Oro is quite grand and historic in a quaint way. Would return to this hotel if I went to San Jose again.
My boyfriend and I recently visited San Jose and Hotel Grano de Oro was our first stop. We were exhausted from our flight and the staff did everything possible to make our transition to Costa Rica an easy one. They arranged our transportation for the following day, recommended great food, and brought us a fruit plate to welcome us to the hotel. The staff is very professional and you can tell that customer service is their #1 priority. They have all the amenities you could ask for. We enjoyed the two jacuzzis on the roof!
