“Beautiful hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 12, 2009

We stayed on San Jose for only one night. Our flight got in too late for us to attempt to travel to La Fortuna. I must say this hotel was the perfect welcome to Costa Rica. It's a beautiful, unique hotel with comfortable rooms. And the restaurant... absolutely fantastic (and supposedly one - if the not best - in San Jose). The staff was very attentive, helped us exchange money, and upgraded us to a bigger room. Plus, the roof hot tubs were a great way to unwind after a long day of flying. Great start to a fantastic vacation!

Stayed in Grano De Oro on arrival in Costa Rica & again before we left. Cannot praise this hotel highly enough, staff were excellent and really helpful, the rooms were lovely and had character, and the food in the restaurant was superb. There is a lovely little roof jacuzzi as well which is nice and quiet. Would definately recommend this hotel.

The Hotel Grano de Oro was an excellent stopping point during my recent stay in Costa Rica. I stayed in San Jose on the days after/before flying in/out and I couldn't have been more impressed with the service and accommodations. The staff was exceedingly professional and quickly responded to all of our needs. The rooms were large, clean and luxurious. The beds were amazingly comfortable, which was much appreciated after 10 days in the jungle! The roof top hot tub was a perfect place to unwind after a long, cold day of white water rafting. The location is a bit removed from either the airport or central downtown, but both were a short trip and hotel's rooms and service more than made up for location.

If Grano de Oro was located in a chic part of New York, Chicago or LA, it would be extolled as the perfect boutique alternative to the local Four Seasons. The hotel and restaurant are gorgeous and the welcome is warm and genuine. I have been in more opulently luxurious hotels and many hotels have longer lists or services and facilities, but few nicer hotels exist. I LOVED this hotel! I have stayed at several Relais and Chateau properties and this hotel fits that model to a T.

San Jose is not a tourist's city. It is the humble capital of a developing nation. One visits for a specific reason. Consequently Grano de Oro came as a surprise and delight. It is an oasis in San Jose. The good news about San Jose for me was that I never felt threatened or unsafe.

The hotel (30 to 40 rooms) appears to have been two grand, circa 1900 homes that have been artfully joined by a 21st century glass addition. The interior features abundant use of gorgeous wood columns, moldings, bannisters and floors set off against beautiful silk draperies and lush upholstery and enhanced by tropical plants and flowers. The architect and designers deserve awards and bonuses. The website's pictures do not do it justice.

The restaurant is the most beautiful room in a gorgeous, small hotel. The food is also excellent. I had three dinners and two lunches and every meal was good. Dinners are definitely a 'fine dining' vs 'getting something good to eat' experience.

Being by myself I opted for an entry level 'standard queen' room. It was smallish (perhaps 12 X 14), simply (but very tastefully) furnished with wicker table and chairs, antique armoire and a very comfortable bed. It was not air conditioned, but a/c wasn't needed at all in October. The colors, art and juxtaposition of styles made for a very pleasant space. The bathroom was very Restoration Hardware, neither large nor small, and had a shower, but no tub. It was fine for just me, but would have been a bit tight had I not been traveling alone. FYI- they have 3 or 4 categories of larger rooms.

The very best feature of the inexpensive room was that a modest price enabled me to stay at a gem of a hotel without being in a closet. The price/value balance is perfect.

I have been talking about this hotel for two weeks now. I was so impressed. If you prefer brand new Westins to boutiques, this may not be for you. However, if historic character and charm combined with the finest materials while avoiding glitz of any kind is important to you, make a point of staying at this hotel when you are in San Jose.

That may be an overstatement, but here's the deal: we had spent several days on the coast and loved it, but excellent food and superb lodging were not on the list of things we were able to enjoy there. On our way out of Costa Rica, we decided to treat ourselves and stayed at Grano de Oro. I can't describe just how delicious the food was, how divine the rooms with their open windows on the patio, the jacuzzi, the totally charming wait staff in the restaurant--it was all too too dreamy and we fell totally in love with it. It was the perfect close to a lovely CR trip.

The moment you pull up in front of the Grano de Oro hotel you know you have arrived at some place special. You are greeted; curb side, with warm smiles. Suddenly your luggage and all other arrival incidentals are taken care of as you are helped out of your vehicle and assisted in every way possible to make your way to reception. Our first impression (and always is) “We’re going to like this place”. We stayed at the Grano de Oro three (3) nights, Oct. 10-11 and again, Oct. 16, 2009. The first two nights on our arrival into Costa Rica, from home. The last night, a week later; the night before our departure home. We love the Grano de Oro for its excellent service, gracious attention to detail, wonderful open air, or covered dining, and wonderful menu with many delicious selections, and comfortable rooms. The restaurant serves great fare, breakfast, lunch and dinner. The wait staff will even work with you, the night before, to insure that you have a good breakfast, or snack before your (our) early airport departure, or early morning tour pickup. We’ve found the staff always ready to please, no matter what we needed; wake up calls, faxing, or leaving one of our suitcases for a few days, as we traveled to a more remote part of the country, restricting “so many” suit cases in the small boats or planes we would be taking. Our favorite room is the Garden Suit, with attached small garden patio. Located in a stately remodeled mansion, in a quiet neighborhood, the Grano exudes class and is a welcome haven for tired travelers, looking to recharge, after a long day of air travel or busy day of local site seeing. For us, it offers a relaxing and sophisticated atmosphere that’s a joy to return to, time after time. We are personally welcomed by Christian, front desk, and many of the staff, even if it’s been a several years since our last visit. When in San Jose, we won’t stay anywhere else. The Grano de Oro embodies the comfort, services and attention to detail that we look forward to and appreciate.

This is an older property, but they are definately keeping it up. It was really nice.
I only wish they kept the hot tubs open later.

The neighborhood surrounding the hotel is a little seedy, but I felt safe the whole time. There is an AMPM, and a multitude of fast food places near by. The best word to describe this place is charming. The waterfall entrence was a nice touch as well.
