“Excellent boutique hotel”

Grano de Oro Hotel

Housed in a former family home, this elegant boutique hotel is a welcome refuge in the heart of this (somewhat unattractive) city.

It takes more than a high thread-count on your sheets to make a great hotel. And this one delivers with outstanding service. They were pleased to oblige on all our requests.

I would pass on meals at the restaurant though. There are much better options in town.

An exceptionally fine hotel with an excellent restaurant.
Composed of an historic structure seamslessly integrated with more modern additions, all featuring dark woodwork and striking interior spaces, creating a sense of timeless elegance.
Rooms offer high ceilings, spacious bathrooms, comfortable mattresses, tasteful appointments. Service staff at every level is pleasant, courteous and efficient. Highly recommended.

We have stayed at this hotel and have lived through their growing pains. This hotel, bigger and better, still offers the best service in town. The restaurant is unbelievable as is the customer service. Highly recommend.

“Grano de Oro gem in otherwise dull San Jose”

We stayed our last two nights in Costa Rica in San Jose after a 10-day honeymoon trip and loved the Grano de Oro. Our room was nice with a little patio and fountain, the house was beautiful and the restaurant/courtyard was amazing. We had dinner our first night there which was delicious and in a great setting. We walked around San Jose that first day and weren't too impressed, so we decided to take a day-trip to Arenal volcano, which the hotel set up and was a nice way to spend our last day in Costa Rica. Overall, I would highly recommend Grano de Oro if you have to stay in San Jose, but it was nothing compared to Mal Pais where we were for the bulk of our trip!

“Beautiful Hotel”

Fort Lauderdale, Florida

Our third trip to Costa Rica within 8 years. We always try some place new each time. This hotel is beautiful and so out of place to where it was located. The first night we met friends and ate somewhere out of the outskirts of town, not sure where, Los Cebollines..a Mexican restaurant. It was expensive and ok food.

The second day we rafted Pacuare and it was as always excellent, with Rios Tropicales. After a long day, we opted to try the restaurant at the hotel. The place is beautiful. The rooms are ok, nothing great, but clean. The bathroom can be renovated a little bit more. We had drainage problems in the shower as well as some of the water spraying out of the shower head rather than on us. The walls are thin and the doors slam a lot. You can't help the sound of the doors, they stick a bit. There are signs to tell people to be silent, as everyone has their windows open..and it's hard to sleep when kids are running around, but that is to be expected, I supposed when the rooms are in a courtyard setting. The food was very good. Dinner was expensive but not for what you were given. I can see why so many people rave about the place. The ambience really was lovely. As for dinner service, well we had to ask for things three or four times before we received what we wanted but it was always done with a smile and a "I'm sorry". We wouldn't mind staying there again except we didn't care for the location. It suited our needs and everyone was very kind and friendly.

Overall, this is a lovely hotel and for the price, you really can't go wrong.
