“Serenity and Romance in the middle of a noisy city!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 12, 2013

This environmentally sustained boutique hotel was a sheer delight. The design of the former manor makes every spacious room feel private and it gave us the sense we were the only ones there. Our room overlooked a small courtyard/garden that was the home to several unusual birds - delightful. The restaurant sat in the middle of the hotel and had a charming outdoor courtyard section. Our food was excellent and the tres leches cake was like a slice of heaven! The wait staff were friendly and courteous and very helpful.
The friendly personnel, combined with the design of the building made me feel as if I had stepped back in time to a gentler era. Their efforts to make a minimal impact on the planet made it even more enjoyable. I loved this place and highly recommend it!

Great boutique hotel. Lovely colonial design with beautiful woodwork. The restaurant is in the center of the building and you can enjoy meals alfresco. The food was wonderful. Our room was spacious and clean. The rental car agency even dropped our rental car there. There's a good reason why this place is rated #1.

This is a little boutique hotel haven in San Jose and highly recommended. It used to be the home of a noble family who now own a well known biscuit factory.
It is in typical Spanish colonial style with an inner courtyard used as a dining area when the weather allows.
The rooms are beautifully appointed and very clean.
There are 2 small Jacuzzis on the rooftop terrace.
The food is reported to be the best in San Jose. We found it very good and the waiter service up to scratch with any very good restaurant in Europe. The prices are good and the wine not too expensive.

Room Tip: All the rooms are lovely and different features. We had a room at the front on the first floor and i...

The Hotel Grano de Oro is not to be missed if you are staying in San Jose! It's old world charm with the woodwork, transoms, decorative lighting, outdoor gardens, and more! Each room is decorated differently and you will enjoy whatever room you rent! We loved the over sized tub, and the very comfortable bed and linens! Rooms are equipped with minibars (if you decide to use it), and a coffee pot. I would return to San Jose just to stay at this fine boutique hotel.

Room Tip: I don't think there is a bad room in the hotel.

My husband and I spent a night at the Grano de Ora on our way home after a trip to Costa Rica . We were so impressed with the hotel, it was like something out of colonial times . The bar is a must go to, we ate at it, and enjoyed every bite. Great food as well as great staff. We will definitely return .

Room Tip: Bring ear plugs, the hotel is in a busy section of San Jose

First night in Costa Rica . Stayed for dinner and it was a very good , high standard food and special setting . The hotel rooms are nice and clean but not more than that . Staff very nice. The lobby also special but the overall experience is not necessarily one of going back.
