Stayed three nights. Convienent and nice. New owners (American hotel group) so more English friendly than before. Good casino and lots of restaurants nearby. Hotel is in the process of taking over and changing restaurant which is good because the food was okay but expensive and all Italian. TV's could use an upgrade but I didn't go to watch TV. Staff was very friendly.
If there is anything less than 1 star rating, I would've chosen that instead. The room is filthy, the bathtub was clogged so I ended up with a tub full of dirty water after I took a shower. Coffee machine did not work, room lighting was not any brighter than a candle. I could hardly see the content of my suitcase, let alone trying to read. Bathroom smelled of piss and the ceiling was making a crackling noise as if about to fall down when I entered/exited the room.
Front desk service was horrible and quite terribly rude. The concierge did not know anything about what's around the location. I asked if there is any restaurant in the neighborhood because I usually prefer to dine outside the hotel. He said there is none within walking distance. I took a walk anyways, and I found at least a handful of nice looking restaurants within 3-4 blocks radius (less than 10 min walk!!). Later I asked some locals I met on the street and they were pointing left and right!!
On of the evenings, I had to choice but to have a late dinner at the restaurant in the hotel. The food was horrible, rice was undercooked and the seafood was overcooked. The taste is very bland as if they forgot to season it, and asking for a tabasco took 3-4 requests and no less than 20 minutes. The teacup was dirty so I had to send it back to get replaced. Then somehow the tea was oily - I don't believe there is a recipe for tea with olive oil, so I had to assume the second batch was equally not clean.
And the manager is a male chauvinistic snob who apparently had some issues dealing with female guests. He did not even offer a sincere apology for all the mess while busied himself smooching the male guest standing next to me.
I have to be pretty crazy to ever set foot in this place ever again....
This hotel was probably once one of the nicest in San Jose, but it is now in decline. The rooms were nice and clean enough, and the staff was generally helpful. This hotel promotes its first class spa, excercise facilities, and sauna all over its website. We found the jacuzzi and sauna to be broken, however, and the exercise area was unlit at night. The hotel is in a convenient location downtown. Be sure to carry your passport or a copy of it whenever you venture out. On our first night, we were shaken down by some corrupt police officers a few blocks from the hotel. The increased presence of Americans and American dollars is certainly having some negative effects on the city.
Lobby was deceivingly classy - rooms were worse than a dingy American motel. Beds were uncomfortable, pillows were rocks, the TV didn't work, and the lighting was insufficient. The telephones malfunctioned so there was an annoying ring every half hour or so - the best the hotel staff could do was unplug the whole phone system. The food in the restaurant was not good, but expensive. Whole experience was not worth the price! Try the Holiday Inn Aurola or skip downtown San Jose altogether and stay just outside of the city at the Courtyard Marriott...
