“Nice Hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 27, 2013

The Hotel was very clean and the staff was very friendly and helpful. I totally recommend this hotel and I will stay here again in the near future. It is very close to everything and you can walk to everything. The restaurant staff was great and the food was very good.

Room Tip: We stayed in the Deluxe room

The hotel staff is very kind and they are very competitive as well as well educated. The rooms are nice except rooms 518 and 521 which I stayed. They look as old as the building is. Even knowing that the hotel is a tradition hotel in San José, the rooms should have newer furniture.
In room 518 the chair to seat is broken because being extremely old. Toilet is more than 20 years old. In the other rooms is fine. Just make sure the rooms with balcony, the glasses should be noise proof cause at night there is too much noise downstaris.

We stayed at the hotel two night at the beginning of the trip and one more before leaving Costa Rica. On the first and last day there were no hot water until the morning of the next day. We called the desk and were told this problem is effecting the entire hotel.
The Hotel is clean and centrally located but you would be surprised how a lack of a shower can ruin your day.

Tip: Find another option in the area.

This hotel is very conveniently located downtown, within walking distance to restaurants, shops, parks, museums. It has a restaurant & bar which has good food & drinks & is reasonable priced. The front desk staff goes well above & beyond their duties, always welcoming & helping with anything we needed. I would most definitely stay at this hotel if even in San Jose again.

my bf and I just returned this week from visiting Costa Rica, we stayed at the Balmoral in San Jose, part of a vaca package deal i found on expedia.com. If you're on a budget and want value this is the place to stay. It is located right on the central avenue, in the heart of the city and within walking distance to museums, shopping, a ton of fast food restaurants as well as many local spots to enjoy. We had the basic standard room it was located on the 5th floor to the back of the building, it was quiet. The room was bigger than I expected, it held 2 full size beds, large closet, a security box, dresser, small table with 2 chairs, tv with a mix of spanish and english channels. Free wifi! I had my ipad and iphone and had no problem with the wifi service, my bf had the Nexus 7 and an Evo, he found it to be slow for him especially during the day since he was doing a lot of downloading. The wifi reached all the way to the restaurant and lobby. There was one large window in the room, it looked out to the side of the building next door with what appeared to be scaffolding. We were not bothered by the view, we closed the windows and turn on the air, it did not take away from our experience. The bathroom had a full size tub with shower head, toilet and sink, hot steamy water, clean towels. The bathroom fixtures are definitely older with some peeling paint on the bathtub but again, it did not bother us, and it did not take away from our experience. There was a minibar, it was locked and we didn't use it. My bf was a little annoyed that he couldn't at least open the refrigerator to keep our water cold, but again not a big deal. The room was comfortable and cozy, and worth the money especially since we barely spent anytime in it. We had the breakfast plan, it was buffet style which consisted of rice and beans, potatoes, sausages, pancakes, plantains, eggs made to order, pastries, fresh fruit, juice and fresh coffee. (Costa Rican pineapple is a religious experience, it is simply that amazing. )
The receptionist were friendly and helpful, they were able to put us through to Jose a tour operator who sold us two tours one of which turned out to be private, it was great.

If I have anything negative to say about our room, is the lights weren't that great, and our security box broke half way through our trip and no refrigerator.

Simply put if you are on a budget and you want some place, clean and nice to stay, Balmoral is it.

This hotel is right in the heart of the downtown San Jose area but is really nice. The downtown area is really cool and different than american cities but it is really dirty, so it was super cool to have such a nice hotel right in the middle of it all. The restaurant is a bit pricey but the food is really good. We really loved staying at The Balmoral and would definitely stay there again.

The hotel is located at the heart of the city, making it ideal for visiting San Jose. The rooms are spacious and clean. The breakfast is served in the restaurant which looks really nice. Would recommend this hotel to everyone. Big plus; Wifi was very fast and available in our room
