“beautiful, but a business hotel”

The Intercontinental Real is a very beautiful hotel both outside and in. When you first walk in the main atrium is 6 stories high with a glass elevator and reminds me of a Holland America cruise ship. The lobby has a good variety of shops and restaurants, and everything is very upscale. The main dining room which is usually buffet style is quite good everything is 5-star. However, it is definately a business hotel, although it does have a beautiful lawn area where they hold weddings. It has a business center, several meeting rooms, and all of the rooms have desks and probably data ports for your laptop (I am not computer savy, so I don't know for sure, but I assume that what those outlet-things were). The rooms are VERY small, but so are all of the rooms at hotels in Latin America. It is across the street from a mall so if you need to do any shopping it's a good location, but it's not really close to the airport or anything else for that matter. I would use it as a hotel for 1 or 2 nights either at the beginning or the end of your trip, but I definatley would not make it my destination. It is a world-class hotel, but it's not a resort and there's nothing conveniently closeby.

This hotel is not up to the standards of other world class hotels. In general, I like the Intercontinental chain, but this one does not fit in.

They were prepaid by my travel agency for my stay there, but they insisted on charging my credit card because they hadn't received the payment from Continental, a multi-million dollar company.

They very inconsiderately put me in the middle of the dispute. They received the money from the agency, but it has been 2 weeks, and I still don't have the money they charged my credit card!

In addition, the hotel is really not located close to anything of interest. No jacuzzi's, no steam room either. Just a wimpy sauna which takes forever to heat up.

The hotel is mostly for business travelers. They allow smoking in the lobby, which was totally disgusting! AVOID!!!

“Not what you would expect from Intercontinental”

InterContinental Real Costa Rica

It was expected on our stay that the Interconitnetnal woudl be the most lavish of teh three hotel we would be staying, and the reverse was true. Both Tabacon Resort (near arenal Volcano) and Cala Luna (Tamarindo) were far superior in both service, atrmoshphere, and quality of the room and resort. The Inercontinental is safe and away from the bustle of downtaonw and right across from a huge shopping amll, and this is teh draw. The pool is really good and basically was empty the entire time. Room service was always prompt, though the food was less than stellar, and even the wrong meal was delivered at times. The rooms were only average and not really a good comp to a Shearton. The bathrooms are in marbel and very nice, though for the rate of US$165, you codul find a better hotel and experience. The hotel want to charge you additiaonl for another person, though don;t let them. Just check in as one person and have your party join you in your room a few moments later. they really do not check. Why woudl you pay an extra 29 per person per night? For what? For additiaonl water and linens? You certainly do not get a buffet breakfast or anythgin additiaonl for this rate. Overal, this hotel is dull, bioring, and not worth teh money. San Jose overall is rather not worth more than stayign just one nigth to recover from flight before headign on to your next stop out of the city.

Clean, safe, but boring. Would not stay here again. Located near international airport & town, a good place to spend overnight before heading off to other remote areas. Easy access to the major highways. Close to the in town airport (domestric travel). Service average, good okay, but not really the Costa Rican experience.

“Comparable to a Sheraton”

InterContinental Real Costa Rica

If you stay at the Intercontinental, expect a Sheraton type experience. Do not look for rustic. We stayed for 3 nights on the clubhouse level. The room was well equipped and large. We were treated to a good breakfast buffet each morning, were provided with friendly service throughout our stay. The exercise room is small but adequate. The pool and surrounding area is huge and sprawling! Though we were too busy to spend any time by the pool! I have no complaints, and if this is the atmosphere you desire, then it is well worth it.
