“Hotel Santo Tomas”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 28, 2013

I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at your hotel. It was so quaint, pretty (loved the colors), and the staff was very friendly. I was so glad that I didn't stay at the big box hotel a couple of blocks away. Location was perfect. As a single woman traveling alone, I felt safe there and I appreciated the 24/7 attendant at the front office. Breakfast was good, and the price was extremely reasonable. I took pictures and sent them home to friends, who asked for contact information, which I was happy to send.

I recently stayed at this lovely hotel for two different weekends during my travels through different regions in Costa Rica. The charm of this historic building in addition to the hard-working and helpful staff really make this hotel a wonderful value for travellers who do not need all the 5 star amenities and gloss of larger chain hotels. You can easily settle into this very homey hotel, enjoying the adorable little pool and the good food from the kitchen. The rooms are clean, if slightly out-dated, but are well cared-for.
The location is central and within an easy walk to several famous tourist sites, including museums, Avenido Centrale with all its shopping, and the extraordinary Teatro Nacionale. As for the staff, Carlos, Miguel and the rest of the staff are the real gems of this hotel and really do go out of their way to do anything they can to help their guests! Thank you again for a wonderful stay, and for all your assistance with my travel plans. I would gladly return and am happy to recommend your hotel. Pura Vida!! Catherine Finlayson

The location of this hotel could not be better when it comes to exploring the city centre. We enjoyed the art and the history that rings through the hallways of this grand old hotel..We cannot say enough about the hospitality demonstrated by Mauricio at the front desk and Antonio and the chef in the restaurant. We had two intermittent stays at this hotel in a two week
period and highly recommend it to others.
With the help of the staff our stay in San Jose and tour reservations could not have been made simpler. The front desk staff guided us and helped us book two weeks of an outstanding itinerary.
We are certainly satisfied that we received good value for our dollar.

Hi Michelle B, Well your title just says it all “"Home away from home"” that is what I want each and every client to leave feeling. We all work hard at that as the reviews point out. I thank you for putting it into words. Your comment about tour reservations being easy is spot on. All of out staff is trained 24/7 to assist in any service that our clients may require and if it is something we don't know we will try our best to find out. We have many families stay and do just what you did and have a memorable vacation here in Costa Rica. Warmest Regards Thomas

Our family of 8 stayed here for a total of three nights - one on our way in and two on our way out. We felt really welcomed by an excellent staff. Everyone we came in contact with made it clear that they were there to serve us in whatever we may need and they did it with the utmost professionalism.

The rooms were beautiful, full of character, and exceptionally clean. The breakfast was more than just a sufficient start to the day - it was a looked forward to bottomless cup of coffee, a hearty plate of food, and fresh fruit by the pool. The pool is fantastic - clean and creative with a great hot tub and waterslide design. The verandas and open air seating areas were calming.

Thomas, the owner, makes it a point to meet every guest and offer his expertise to any and all who need it.

To be honest, now that we know about the area, we would be much, much more likely to stay in the hills and just tour the city rather than the other way around, as the estates area of Volcan Poas and the hills above Alajuela are just as convenient to the airport, but if we were to spend the night in the city again, it would most certainly be at the Hotel Santo Tomas.

Room Tip: Try to get an upstairs room with a pool view balcony. Avoid Room 1 underneath the staircase.

Clean, safe hotel very near the gold museum. Service was excellent. Food in the restaurant was OK. I would recommend taking the breakfast that is included but going elsewhere for dinner. Easy walk to the gold museum and the local shopping district.

My wife & I spent three pleasant days at Hotel Santo Tomas before traveling south to Osa. The location is perfect, within easy walking distance of the various Museos, the pedestrian mall, Parque Morozon, etc. Then, if you wish to see the volcanoes, a coffee plantation, waterfalls, go rafting, zip-lining, etc., the front desk staff and/or owner, Thomas Douglas, will be happy to make suggestions and arrange for easy tour bus pick-up right at the hotel door. The hotel, itself, is a historic coffee plantation owner's house with great C.R. character. All rooms are reasonably priced; even the airy, second floor balcony rooms, one of which we stayed in. For me, the weight room (most hotels don't have this, here or in the U.S.) was a useful addition with more equipment than I needed to maintain my regular weight-lifting schedule when we weren't touring. The bar/restaurant is a simple, open area; a nice place to relax, have a refreshing drink, enjoy a meal, and compare notes with the other Santo Tomas guests. Some people, I see in other reviews, have been put-off by the ubiquitous door and window bars, wall and roof-top razor wires of the hotel...and all of the houses and buildings in Costa Rica in general. Too, some have been upset by the older barrio that the hotel is located within, believing it to be unsafe. To me, though, because of the online research we conducted in preparation for this trip, the security bars, wires, etc. were not a surprise and the historic barrio was expected, safely negotiated during the day, with Ticos, in general, being courteous, helpful...or mostly uninterested in the wandering Gringos exploring their neighborhood streets. The old saying: "When in 'Rome' ( at least try to), do as the Romans do" certainly applies here (or anywhere). Many Ticos , for example, speak and understand English to greater or lesser degrees and do appreciate it when we Gringos at least attempt to reciprocate, even simply and imperfectly, in Spanish. But, I digress. So, if you want to see and stay within the heart, activity and sounds of San Jose. If you wish to avoid the sameness of the "big-box" hotels based upon the USA style. Then, well maintained and wonderfully staffed Hotel Santo Tomas just may be the place for you.

Room Tip: Second floor, balcony rooms are bright, airy and offer roof-top views of the barrio with the the mou...

Hi RidingEZ, Wow I love your title “A Hotel with true Costa Rican Character” This is what the Hotel Santo Tomas is all about. Everyone strives hard to maintain that feeling , from the shiny floors, home made hot sauce at breakfast to the garden areas. I'll just send you a big Thank You for taking the time you did to compose and post your wonderful review. I hope you will be able to return in the future. Safe Travels Thomas

I stayed at Hotel Santo Tomas, in San Jose, at the beginning of my trip and at the end of my trip to Costa Rica. I found the people friendly and helpful; the room comfortable and well cared for; and the breakfast delicious - apart from the white bread for toast. I would recommend this hotel to anyone needing a place to stay in San Jose.

Room Tip: I suggest the rooms on the upper floor are nicer.

Hola Suzanna47, Nice to know you enjoyed the Free Hot Cooked Breakfast. And yes we do have whole wheat bread available, may have been a communication problem. I have instructed my staff to be more attentive about this. Thank you for that input. Wonderful to know you are happy. Thomas
