Downtown San Jose was the first place in my entire 12 days in Central America that seemed very sketchy. I made the mistake of arriving on a Sunday when everything was closed and the druggies were out, and also walked from the Coca-Cola bus stand to the hotel, which should've ideally been avoided. The approach to the hotel is very sketchy from that side, so when you exit the hotel, turn right, not left. The lobby of the hotel is nice and well maintained, but once you leave the lobby, the hotel gives the impression of an old place that is beginning to crumble. This place is definitely in need of a renovation/makeover. The room was clean and tidy, the bathroom was also clean and functional, even if a little small. However, the room just looked old - the carpet was old, the AC was probably at least 20 years old, and of course the cooling it provided was that of an AC that is 20 years old. I stayed on the second floor, which meant my view was either of the street below or the worn out building in front. On Monday, the area felt a lot better as the places were open and a lot of people were out in the streets, so that made it feel better, but I was already on my way out of San Jose. The free breakfast was also nice and somewhat elaborate.
So for a really short stay, this place is fine, but I wouldn't stay here longer than 2-3 days. There are some hostels nearby that tripadvisor suggested that are nice and cheap, if you're looking for that.
