“Lovely Little Place”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 2, 2007

We stayed there before and after our Windjammer Cruise, and I had found the place via the Frommers website. What a lovely surprise in one of the nicer districts (Amon) of San Jose! It took us ca. fifteen
minutes to walk into downtown and fifteen minutes to walk to Otoya and the government park, so it's pretty central. Ride from the airport is ca 30 minutes and leads through some rather unsavory neighborhoods (known as La Coca Cola), but the neighborhood around the hotel is safe (despite the nudie bar--remember that prostitution is completely legal and taxed in CR) and boasts a large security guard presence. The Clarion Hotel was just around the corner on the Av 11, where we had an excellent dinner (try the ceviche!); so was the tourist information.

We stayed in two rooms of the hotel (210 and 211)--both had air conditioning, ceiling fans, a well-stocked minibar, and American cable TV. We loved the firm mattresses and pillows, the rich plantation-owner-style decoration, and the clean, spacious bathrooms
with real hot water (not self-understood in CR). And there was, of course, the (almost) free internet access from two terminals right above the breakfast area, which we used frequently, and the rather inexpensive gift shop, which is great for browsing and purchasing one
or the other souvenir.

Our room reservation included a "tropical breakfast," which meant a few pieces of fruit (watermelon, banana, and papaya), orange juice, coffee/tea, and toast with butter and guava jam--very tasty.
Americans can order bacon and eggs for a few extra dollars.

All in all, this is a lovely place. We'd definitely stay there again.

We just returned from a fabulous trip in Costa Rica. Before our trip, we contacted Hotel Britannia. Adrian Coto from the hotel arranged the most fabulous trip for us. We stayed two nights in different areas. We went to San Jose, La Fortuna, Monte Verde and Quepas. He arranged transportation, tours and hotels for us. All we had to do was arrive. It was the most amazing trip. The hotel was nicely decorated and the service was fantastic. Adrian was very accommodating and even arranged a pick up at the airport for us. I would recommend this hotel and Adrian to all of our friends.

  • Liked — Everyone in the hotel was helpful and informative
  • Disliked — It is a bit away from the airport but trade off it was close to the city activities.

The hotel is very charming and conveniently located. Except for the lack of air conditioning, the amenities are comfortable for someone used to USA standards. The best part about the hotel (even better than the good price!) is the WONDERFUL hotel staff. I was traveling alone and had just purchased my package a day prior to my arrival so needless to say, I didn't have much planned. The hotel staff made all my reservations for my day trips and made helpful suggestions when asked. I can't say enough about the GREAT desk staff! I will DEFINITELY recommend this hotel to friends and would come back myself!!

Although Costa Rica is not known as a shopping destination, the Hotel Brittania is very close to the main shopping district in San Jose. The neighborhood isn't pretty, but I didn't feel that it was dangerous as a single woman in her 30's to be navigating alone. Do, however, take a taxi back to the hotel at night and agree to a fare beforehand.

This was our first and last stop on a self-guided motorcycle tour of Costa Rica. The staff were friendly and patient. The conciere was wonderful. The hotel is dated but clean. Our rooms had windows that opened to the interior atrium. The room started off a bit warm, but kicked in the fans and when we got back from wandering , it had cooled to a reasonable temp. The free breakfast was a couple of pieces of truely fresh fruit, toast, and coffee. Not much for a 200 lb man, but it was a healthy start. The neighborhood is a bit crusty, but most of downtown SJ is crusty. It's and easy stroll up the hill to the shopping district and daytime appeared relatively safe for women and children. Night time I would recommend taxis.

Stayed at Hotel Birtannia our first night in Costa Rica. The cab ride to the hotel was interesting, since we were guided through the skid row of San Jose. The hotel is not in a good neighborhood, and there are transvestite prostitutes on every corner of several blocks surrounding the hotel. However, the hotel is gated and there is an armed guard at night. The room was nice, but we left to early in the morning to benefit from the free breakfast.

On our way out of San Jose we stayed at the Garden Court by the airport and it was much nicer, cleaner, included free breakfast and dinner at the 24 hour Dennys (same menu as in the states), free internet, free $ to gamble with at casino, and best of all free shuttle to and from the airport for about $20 more than the britannia. Your cab from the airport to the Britannia will be about $20, so it's worth it to stay somewhere that includes a free shuttle.

Britannia was nice, but I would not recommend staying there. The front porch area is pretty, but the street noise is really loud, and the best deal is at the Garden Court.

II spent my first night in Costa Rica here. The room they showed me was in the original building. The bad news: no window in the room. I probably should have asked for another room, but I was tired and I didn't.

Actually, the hotel was pretty nice. The porch in front proved to be a pleasant place to sit and read a book. The staff was very helpful.

The neighborhood is unimpressive, to say the least. But San Jose simply isn't a very nice place to stay.

I echo the comments of others about the restaurant. I had the worst sirloin steak I have ever encountered -- basically, a salty thin piece of meat. And I was a little worried that I was the only one in the restaurant at 7 p.m. -- maybe others knew something! The chef/waiter was nice to me, unlike what others seem to have experienced.

If I go back, I'll try to find a different place to stay.

Ask for a deluxe room in the back away from the street noise. We had a large room decorated in a lovely Victorian style. The sitting areas and lush plants in the atrium, plus the wrap around porch were lovely and relaxing. We recieved top notch customer service via email before we arrived so transportation, meals and requested tours were all taken care of without a hitch. They sometimes offer 3 day packages (which include day-tours, transfers and breakfast) that are a bargain. We were treated as if we were the only guests. The restaurant leaves something to be desired - high prices for very mediocre food.
