The hotel is situated conveniently, and has an antique, classic feel, but quite rundown. My biggest complaint is getting bit by bed bugs!
The lobby is very rich with an antique feel from a bygone era. Our room was clean, the beds were comfortable, however the bathtub and sliding doors were in need of replacement. The shower doors would not stay on their track and we ended up with a large puddle of water on the floor, no matter how careful we were. There is no AC in any of the rooms, but we did have a cieling fan and was comfortable with the windows open.
Be aware that this hotel is in the center of bustling San Jose and it is Very noisy at night andearly morning hours. They do have a small casino downstairs (30 slots or so), and they do have room service, internet, free full breakfast and a very friendly staff as well. My other option would be the Presidente Hotel which is about 2 city blocks away, but it too is in the heart of San Jose, so again, be aware of the noise factor, if this is an issue to you. Overall, I would stay here again as it is very close to everything, the staff is exceptionally nice and the room service is very handy after a long day. (The casino is an added plus!!!)
We arrived at hotel with a nice little square in front. The closer we got, the more we noticed the square seemed to be used for drug dealing and filled with other unsavory characters. After passing through the loud casino area, we were taken to our supposedly air conditioned room (Orbitz says all rooms air conditioned-not true-not sure if any are). Placed in 3rd floor room above casino. Heard every bell and whistle from casino. Asked to be moved. Surly clerk moved us up 2 floors, facing plaza. Lowlife in Plaza were noisy past 11PM, so asked to move again. Finally got moved to back of hotel, on upper floor, no air conditioned room with a back plaza flute player until 2 AM.
The next day we moved to the Best Western 3 blocks away. It was like a dream resort there compared to the Gran.
We have been visiting the gran hotel off and on for the past three years. we enjoy the place as a whole, however, in the past month things have changed. breakfast that once cost $4.20 has now jumped to $8.00 along with all other items on the menu. Cigarettes that are around $1.00 have gone to $3.00 and they have taken all of the game tables out of the casino. Unlike can or the u.s. you could play blackjack for a dollar and have some fun. Now it is just slot machines. Now we are very unhappy with the place we either stayed at once a week or visited weekly. It is still worth staying there as the room rates are still the same.
For $75/night for a double room including breakfast at a National Historic Landmark hotel is a good deal. The hotel is conveniently located near major banks, theater, museums, and shops. The front lobby looks nice and the restaurant cooks decent food. The room's quality is a major dissapointment. The carpet is a cheap commercial type; it's dark brown and completely worn out! The bathroom's cabinet under the sink is unmaintained. The stairs are worn, and some sections have chipped steps. The front desk has 1 person works most of the time even when it's busy. The great thing is that it provides free hiigh speed internet and free printing!
