“Good looking hotel, but rooms dissappoint!”

Gran Hotel Costa Rica

For $75/night for a double room including breakfast at a National Historic Landmark hotel is a good deal. The hotel is conveniently located near major banks, theater, museums, and shops. The front lobby looks nice and the restaurant cooks decent food. The room's quality is a major dissapointment. The carpet is a cheap commercial type; it's dark brown and completely worn out! The bathroom's cabinet under the sink is unmaintained. The stairs are worn, and some sections have chipped steps. The front desk has 1 person works most of the time even when it's busy. The great thing is that it provides free hiigh speed internet and free printing!

This hotel is a surprising oasis in a city. The rooms are very nicely decorated, and well kept. The staff is very freindly and helpful. The is a nice courtyard and a roof top hot tub. The best part of this hotel however is the restaurant. We had one of the best meals we have had in awhile at this place. It is expensive, and smaller portions, but the flavor is worth every penny! Try the macadamia nut encrusted sea bass, and the dried fruit stuffed chicken, with the orange crepe for dessert...divine! Breakfast was excellent as well.

“Noisey, Staff unfriendly”

We paid in advance for our hotel room and when we got there, they said they had no rooms available in the price we had paid and they put us in a smaller room. Moved us the next day. No discount. We were to have breakfast included. The first morning we had to pay for breakfast. The second morning we did not as I complained to the front desk and they gave is meal tickets and did not offer to pay us back for the first breakfast we had to pay for. This hotel has no airconditioning and if you leave the windows opened it is so noisly from street that you can't sleep.

Thank god we were only there for two nights.

“So glad it was only one night”

Thankfully I only booked one night at this hotel. As other reviewers said, it was LOUD. But I didn't know it would be this loud. They were power-washing the building when we arrived at 10pm. They continued through the night. There was so much street noise (car alarms, voices, etc.) because of the great central location. We had to keep the windows open because there is no AC and it didn't cool down that much at night. The bed was as hard as a rock, there was no clock in the room, and a phone kept ringing in the hall (until I finally took it off the hook). The hotel has not been cared for over the years. One upside: they did have free internet. The breakfast was just kind of okay. It is a GREAT location but I would never stay here again.

“Don't do it!”

Gran Hotel Costa Rica

Our first trip to San Jose, we wanted a centrally located hotel to explore the city. This hotel is as central as you can get, next door to the National Theatre, it sits overlooking the Plaza Cultura.
The lobby is grand and inviting, but that's where the experience ends. We paid for a superior room that was large enough, but it was so noisy from the street below it was incredible. We asked for another room which was provided without qualm, unfortunately, the second room was small, dark and had a tiny slatted window that overlooked a central covered area with no light, but at least it was quiet. That is until the cleaning staff came clattering around at 6.30 the next morning.
That morning we sat in the outside restaraunt that's famed for people-watching, but by the time we had our food, we'd seen half the population of San Jose go by and the other half by the time the bill came.
We'd reported the fan as being out of order (there's no aircon) along with the fridge, nobody ever came around. At 6.30AM the second morning the noise from the cleaning staff was so loud, I opened the door to tell them to stop shouting, they looked at me and carried on.
We voiced our complaints on checkout to the receptionist and we got a shrug in return.
The hotel is old, out of condition, noisy and has rude staff, but as the review says, at least it's central.
