“Great downtown location & breakfast buffet”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 days ago NEW

The location of this hotel couldn't be better - right next to the Museo de Oro (Gold Museum), plazas, restaurants, stores, and a short walk to the government buildings and arts and handicrafts outdoor markets. Additionally, their breakfast buffet is delicious, fresh, and convenient since it is included in the cost of the rooms, which are reasonably priced given that many have air conditioning (not a given in Costa Rica), city views, and updated bathrooms. The piano bar during the evenings is a nice touch, as well as are the restaurant offerings downstairs. Definitely choose valet parking if you have your own vehicle, as it is only $15 per day and includes 24/7 security monitoring (nice to have and not always guaranteed in downtown San Jose).

Room Tip: Be sure to request air conditioning if you require it, as not all rooms automatically include it.

We stayed here one night as part of a school group team and enjoyed it. The hotel quality was better than most of the other hotels we stayed in, but the lack of air conditioning and limited window and fan options left the room stuffy.

But the fifth-floor breakfast room is beautiful - almost Gadsbyesque - and the buffet is very nicely done.

The location is perfect, too, for exploring the city. And the service is very professional.

Was a decent stay for us.

I bought this hotel on Hotwire and was very pleasantly surprised by the nice buffet breakfast. Both The room and bathroom were good, clean, spacious enough, and the location of the hotel is superb. It's close to a market store so if you need to buy anything its right outside. The staff is very courteous and helpful. I ordered a tour and guy went up stairs to look for me to tell me that my pick up shuttle is here. The breakfast beat my expectations, its a buffet style, of very fresh, great tasting foods, eggs, omelettes, whatever you like really, just didn't expect it to be that good.

When I was 18 in Costa Rica, I dreamed of staying at this classic grand hotel. Now I can, partly because I get a paycheck, and partly because it's declined some since that day and is cheaper now. Either way, I'll take it. With new ownership in the last year (we were told by a local friend) and a (looks) recent exterior paint job, the dedicated, attentive, stellar staff are trying the hearts out to honor the magnificent tradition of this hotel, memorialized by the black and white photos that still adorn the lobby exterior. First-rate buffet breakfast in the fifth floor ballroom, and most (but not all) rooms renovated (if leaving something to be desired in bathroom lighting and electrical outlets). Probably we should give it four dots instead of five, but the staff killed us with kindness and the thrill of staying in the historic building--well, we had to go 5.

The other reviews for this hotel are spot on.

It has an excellent location in the center of the city and is a classic and regal building. The lobby is dark, but welcoming and the staff very friendly.

The rooms are small, the AC is a loud stand alone unit and the lighting isn't the best, but the bed and linens are very good and The TV is new with a large number of channels.

A highlight is the free breakfast on the 5th floor. Good selection of foods with a nice view. Also, there is free wifi in the hotel, but it's tough to get a signal in the room. You have to go to a common area for a strong signal.

Bottom line is that if you are looking for a classic property in the city center at a reasonable price AND you don't expect a luxury experience, then the Gran Hotel is a very good choice.

I stayed in the Gran Hotel for three nights. I enjoyed it very much. Nice staff, excellent breakfast with a spectacular view on a balcony on fifth floor. Only thing: There is no parking space. You have to pay 15 $ per night, a staff member drives the car to a public guarded parking space.

As the first and last part of our holiday, the Gran Hotel was the destination. Brilliantly situated (unless Costa Rica have won a match in the World Cup) for all central San Jose. The hotel has wonderful decor which demands some attention. Rooms are spacious but those on the front suffer from poor sound insulation which means that traffic and worse still the pedestrian crossing noise is intrusive. Water pressure is poor with showers which dribble and both rooms suffered from noisy ceiling fans, refrigerator and air-con units.
If you are a weary traveller and want a good night sleep then stay in a modern hotel out of town, downtown San Jose is not really worth the hassle.

Room Tip: Get a room without a view if you want to sleep.
