“A little gem on the way”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 22, 2013

Stayed 2 nights at Fleur de Lys (first and last night in CR), good service, nice rooms, good location, but the best thing with this hotel is the atmosphere, being a part of the people coming and leaving Costa Rica. Very good internet connection, OK food, nice bar. There is a train passing, making a lot of noise, but even that can be charming

Stephie and I have had to come down to San Jose twice in the past two weeks for business and I promise you will find this place amazing. Nice rooms, great staff and don't miss the dinner. The food is fantastic. We plan on making this our home away from home when we come down from Nuevo Arenal. The value is unbeatable in my opinion.

We only stayed here as a stop over in San Jose on our way to the Caribbean coast.

Pros: Clean rooms. Friendly helpful staff. Lovely food. Breakfast included in price of room. Near main strip in city.

Cons: Really noisy trains/trams or whatever they were right outside the hotel on main road, beeping every two minutes sounding like ferry fog horns. This was heard extremely frequently while in our room and also at dinner in the restaurant! Was ongoing throughout the day from early morning to night. So loud that it disturbed our time here immensly.

Wouldn´t stay here again.

This hotel is located near the centre of the town and we can recommend it. Friendly people and good service. We arrived late in the evening and they arranged a transfer from the airport for 30 dollars. Good breakfast.

We stayed here for two nights on our way through San Jose.

For the price we were incredibly happy with the hotel - good central location for exploring, clean, great breakfast buffet, powerful hot shower and nice friendly staff.

We ate in the hotel for dinner one night - tasty food at a normal hotel restaurant price (slightly more than an average restaurant).

Whilst we heard the train it didn't overly bother us, they pass by quickly :)

We only spent one night there, but felt very comfortable! The design/decoration of the hotel is really nice, warm and welcoming. The room was clean, breakfast was good (toast, fruits, cake, eggs,...) and we also had dinner there, which was good as well! Staff was helpful and nice. Price absolutely okay for what you get!

We stayed here for 2 nights. Had a room facing the front road instead of court yard.
Room was big and hot water was working fine.

The hotel is next to a train line so no matter which room you get, you can't completely avoid the noise. The train most active around 5:30am - 7:30am and evening around 6pm - 7:30pm roughly. Then it quiets down. If you go to bed around 9pm or later and don't mind waking up at 6am, this hotel would work for you just fine.

The interior garden decor was pretty nice. Staff are friendly except one older guy who didn't leave me with good impression. He played Bejeweled game on the computer the whole time we were there having breakfast. He didn't even greet us from the time we entered the restaurant to the time we left. All other staff are very helpful.

Breakfast is pretty much the same every day - Traditional Ticos meal (beans, rice, eggs, plantain), fruits and cereals. Free parking if you have a car.

Water in San Jose is safe to drink, but the hotel also has a water cooler by the tourism desk.

Our cab fare from San Jose airport to the hotel was around US$25. Alternatively you can get hotel to pick you up for $29 (price listed on the tourism desk). Go to this link to check out the cab fee before you travel: http://www.taxifarefinder.com/main.php?city=San-Jose-Costa-Rica&from=Juan+Santamar%C3%ADa+International+Airport&to=9.932602%2C-84.071015

There are several good dinner choices not far from the hotel. We feel safe walking at night. We walked to National Theater, National Museum, and many other places.

If you like bread, there is a bread chain called Samuelito not far from the hotel. They serve wonderful bread. My favorite is passion fruit bread.

If you want something more fancy, go for Gran Hotel that's right across the National Theater. Of course you'll pay more. If you like to be smacked in the heart of the city - cabs and people, then go for Holiday Inn Aurora (very nice hotel with reasonable price). We almost booked Balmoral but we walked by, it didn't impress us.

Overall, this is a decent hotel in the center of San Jose.

Room Tip: Choose rooms upstairs. Some rooms downstairs don't have windows.
