This hotel is very pretty on the inside but it is in a VERY bad part of town. If you do not plan on venturing out on your own without a planned tour bus it is not safe to walk outside of the guarded doors. The amenities at this hotel are nice but it is not the type of place that should be the "base" for journeys around the city on foot. Also, there is a bar at this hotel but there is no one working the bar so you cannot get drinks without going into the restaurant and sweet talking the wait staff there.

This hotel is in a very bad area! There were drugs and prostitution on the block and across the street from the hotel that we openly observed. The desk staff was not pleasant upon check-in and told us that they didn't have our room ready. This was despite the fact that we were there after our check-in time. We then went to the restaurant to waste another hour and they were rude and got our orders incorrect - when we asked about getting our orders corrected, they refused! The desk staff the following morning was pleasant and helped us schedule our shuttle to the airport but told us it was a 20 minute ride - in actuality, it was a 45 minute ride. I was very disappointed and frustrated with the neighborhood and the presentation that it was in the middle of downtown and the hustle and bustle of everything when it felt like it was more in the middle of the projects!

I arrived at the hotel in a taxi at about midnight straight from the airport after a delayed flight. I was starting to wonder where on earth the taxi driver was taking me as the area around this hotel seemed very run down and dodgy.
The hotel is actually more of a motel with outdoor access to the rooms which is not what I was expecting. I did not feel safe but was so shattered from the long journey that I just fell into bed and went to sleep.

The room was fine although the bathroom light didn't work, the breakfast and coffee in the morning were good and there was free internet access.
I would not have stayed at this hotel for more than one night or if I'd wanted to see some of San Jose and i did not return to it for the night before my flight home even though it was considerably cheaper than the hotels closer to the airport

When we checked in the BW San Jose, I noticed the guard with the shotgun at the entrance. Then I noticed the people sleeping and begging across the street.
Rooms were fine and service was OK.
Other than the Marriott San Jose, ALL of the city, and the hotels are Dangerous!
Shotguns in all the banks, the grocery stores and the larger businesses.
The Pacific coast is much better.
