Darryll, the owner of Casa Abierta, was waiting for us at the airport and drove us to his house in his comfortable car. In the Casa, we had a lovely bedroom upstairs, free access to the living room, a comfortable outdoor patio, houseful of fresh flowers, and use of the kitchen when needed.
The 'cocinara', Maria, makes a great breakfast. Fresh fruits - mango, pineapple, strawberry, water melon etc. We especially enjoyed the 'Gallo Pinto' (rice and beans - with plantains), as well as the home-made muffins, cookies and banana bread. There were also cereals, yogurt, juice and of course Costa Rican coffee.
A few blocks from the house is an ATM machine which dispenses U.S. dollars and Colones. A short walk further gets you to numerous restaurants and cafes. A well-stocked supermarket is about a ten-minute walk in a different direction.
If you happen to be at Casa Abierta on the weekend do not miss the Saturday Vegetable, Fruit, and Flower Market. Darryll heads out early, around 6:30 am , and you will find the market is a real feast for the eyes.
Of course, what makes Casa Abierta special is the owner Darryll. It is not just his warm hospitality but he is a man who has travelled the world. This led to an exchange of great travel stories and many interesting discussions during our stay.
