“Another week in San Jose, Costa Rica - Oct. 2012”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 24, 2012

After surfing for another hotel in San Jose, Costa Rica, I came across The Mansion del Parque Bolivar. After several tries to book a package, Expedia did have one room available; this place is REALLY unique for it has only 5 rooms - it is a converted 3 story house in the Barrio Amon area. The workers are extraordinary and EVERYONE gave me vip treatment. Alejandro, Luis, and Eduardo are the nicest guys you would ever want to meet; and Flavio, the waitress AND maid is in a class by herself. The breakfasts were included with tables on the 2nd floor terrace overlooking The Yellow House which is the Cosat Rican White House. The hotel is very close to the Promanade shopping area. The hotel has a French restaurant on the 2nd floor but I did not take advantage. The front desk does close at 10:30; so a later arrival will have to be comfirmed with one of the gentlemen by phone or e-mail. The room #5 was nice except for the bathroom that had no place to put shaving cream, toothpaste etc. Flavio showed me the 4 other rooms and all had a glass shelf for toiletries which I will ask for next time. After 10:30, I strolled around the corner to The Sportsman's Lodge which is a nice restaurant - sports bar; The three men do speak English but Flavio does not. This hotel does not allow "ladies of the night"; so the single guy might not like it; the breakfasts were outstanding with eggs, fruit, sweetrolls, juice, and great coffee with Flavio serving. Overall, this is a fine place that is very quaint and I trust your stay will be quite pleasant without any issues. Also, 2 blocks away, the Awake Spa Center offers great professional massages - just massages and nothing else - and one of the guys can make the appointment for you. Paula, the owner, is outstanding and will give you a great massage. I did go twice. I have been to San Jose several times and finally found a "well kept secret".

Room Tip: Room 1 is very big and will cost more. Rooms 2, 3, and 4 look bigger but, I think, are cheaper than...

“Get this as first night in San José”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 24, 2012

Very nice downtown place, 25$ taxis from airport, service is great, front desk clerk is very helping, rooms are clean even though the city isn't... Would have given 5 star if they would have an appropriate espresso machine. Hotel has a french resto, good coffee beans from CR and no espresso machine!? weird...

“Quaint boutique hotel close to downtown San Jose”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 9, 2012

My husband and I spent several nights here while on our honeymoon in Costa Rica. It was easy to make reservations over email, and our questions were always promptly and politely answered by the hotel staff. We stayed in San Jose both at the beginning and the end of our trip and we are very glad that Parque Bolivar was our "hub" during our vacation!

The night we flew into San Jose we were picked up by the hotel taxi driver Mario. He was punctual, friendly and it was very reassuring knowing that we were going with a driver who knew the way to the hotel (NONE of the streets in San Jose have signs, so the thought of driving a rental vehicle and navigating our way through San Jose at night was not appealing).

Breakfast was served in their outdoor terrace, and included a lovely selection of meats, cheeses, a scrambled egg, small cinnamon bun and fruit skewer. Some people may find breakfast a little small, but we were very satisfied with the serving size and it was more than enough for both myself and my husband. Great selection of teas and coffee as well. Very friendly service.

The front desk staff were both very accommodating. Alejandro and Eduardo answered all of our questions promptly, and were both helpful and courteous. They arranged a shared van ride for us from San Jose to La Fortuna (Arenal volcano), and also helped us book a tour to the Britt Coffee plantation just outside of the city. They had excellent recommendations for other restaurants in the city, loads of advice for travellers and were always willing to provide directions on how to visit attractions downtown.

The rooms were clean and spacious upon our arrival - very impressed. Simply furnished, and included a TV, bar fridge and hotel safe.

We were able to have dinner at the hotel restaurant (Cafe La Terrasse), and we were very satisfied with the selection on their menu. It is probably a little pricier than most places in Costa Rica, but definitely an excellent deal compared to North American restaurants. We were pleasantly surprised to find a French restaurant of this calibre in San Jose! The food was both delicately prepared and beautifully plated. The eggplant tagine and vegetarian lasagna which we ordered were delicious. The chocolate tarte which we had for dessert was also excellent.

Overall, an excellent place to stay if you are looking for accommodations in San Jose!

“Family suite was nice, but too bad about San Jose”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 7, 2012

We stayed one night before departing Costa Rica. The hotel is cute, the staff is nice and the family suite was adequate for our family of 4. Breakfast on the terrace was very good. However, had we known that San Jose was such a dive, we would have never have come all the way into the city. It was a bit of a downer being in San Jose, after our amazing stays in the beautiful areas of the Nicoya pensisula and Arenal volcano. Further more, finding it in our rental car was a bit difficult, thank goodness for it being close to the zoo, and we were not sure that our car was going to still be in the parking lot around the corner the next day because of the dubious nature of the city. If you need to come into San Jose, definitely stay here. If you don't need to come into San Jose, then definitely stay out by the airport somewhere.

Room Tip: Family suite had a double bed and two sleeper sofas so was good for a family of 4.

Dear guests,
Thank you very much for your review, we are glad you had a pleasant time staying with us.
We regret your perception of San José was not very positive, the capital is a place with many things to offer not only for the local people but also for tourists, spots like the National Museum of Costa Rica, the National Theater, la plaza de la Cultura, the Jade and Gold Museum, the central market, just to name a few, are some of the reasons why many people around the world have and are still visiting San José. Our hotel is located in the heart of the city, sorrounded by a Classic-European Arquitecture, and with the gardens of the ministry of foreign relations in front of us, we consider our locations is strategic for any person that wants to have a good taste of San José and without any safety concerns because San Jose has been declared as one of the safest and least violent cities in Latin-America.
We hope you have the chance to get to know more interesting places in San José next time you come to Costa Rica, once again, thank you very much for staying with us.

Kind regards
Fabrizio Feola

“Great Spot! Glad we found it!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 6, 2012

After booking online you never know what you might get but this place is a hidden gem! If you're looking not to spend too much and still have a clean room, comfortable bed and a good location then I would recommend the Mansion del Parque Bolivar! It's a beautiful house on a quiet street and feels safe. There are only 5 rooms but they are spacious and like I said clean! The shower was nice and we slept really well. There's really no need for A/C since San Jose is a pretty cool climate and there's also cable TV and free wifi. They do not offer free parking but they do offer parking a couple blocks away in a safe parking lot. It costs $1 per hour to park there unless you want to park on the street (Remember to pay cash only, don't accept cards at the parking lot). Knowing it's in the parking lot makes you feel a lot safer about it! It's worth it. The staff is friendly, it was easy to reserve a room and the day we came back from the coast we stopped in to ask if a room was available and it was! They offered the Superior room for a good price and helped take our luggage upstairs. If you're planning on staying 1 night in San Jose because you're going to the west or east coast then this is the best place to stay! It's also very easy to find the main road to the airport! Great location. If I go back to San Jose I will stay here again! Thank you!!
