“Get this as first night in San José”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 24, 2012

Very nice downtown place, 25$ taxis from airport, service is great, front desk clerk is very helping, rooms are clean even though the city isn't... Would have given 5 star if they would have an appropriate espresso machine. Hotel has a french resto, good coffee beans from CR and no espresso machine!? weird...

“Quaint boutique hotel close to downtown San Jose”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 9, 2012

My husband and I spent several nights here while on our honeymoon in Costa Rica. It was easy to make reservations over email, and our questions were always promptly and politely answered by the hotel staff. We stayed in San Jose both at the beginning and the end of our trip and we are very glad that Parque Bolivar was our "hub" during our vacation!

The night we flew into San Jose we were picked up by the hotel taxi driver Mario. He was punctual, friendly and it was very reassuring knowing that we were going with a driver who knew the way to the hotel (NONE of the streets in San Jose have signs, so the thought of driving a rental vehicle and navigating our way through San Jose at night was not appealing).

Breakfast was served in their outdoor terrace, and included a lovely selection of meats, cheeses, a scrambled egg, small cinnamon bun and fruit skewer. Some people may find breakfast a little small, but we were very satisfied with the serving size and it was more than enough for both myself and my husband. Great selection of teas and coffee as well. Very friendly service.

The front desk staff were both very accommodating. Alejandro and Eduardo answered all of our questions promptly, and were both helpful and courteous. They arranged a shared van ride for us from San Jose to La Fortuna (Arenal volcano), and also helped us book a tour to the Britt Coffee plantation just outside of the city. They had excellent recommendations for other restaurants in the city, loads of advice for travellers and were always willing to provide directions on how to visit attractions downtown.

The rooms were clean and spacious upon our arrival - very impressed. Simply furnished, and included a TV, bar fridge and hotel safe.

We were able to have dinner at the hotel restaurant (Cafe La Terrasse), and we were very satisfied with the selection on their menu. It is probably a little pricier than most places in Costa Rica, but definitely an excellent deal compared to North American restaurants. We were pleasantly surprised to find a French restaurant of this calibre in San Jose! The food was both delicately prepared and beautifully plated. The eggplant tagine and vegetarian lasagna which we ordered were delicious. The chocolate tarte which we had for dessert was also excellent.

Overall, an excellent place to stay if you are looking for accommodations in San Jose!

“Family suite was nice, but too bad about San Jose”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 7, 2012

We stayed one night before departing Costa Rica. The hotel is cute, the staff is nice and the family suite was adequate for our family of 4. Breakfast on the terrace was very good. However, had we known that San Jose was such a dive, we would have never have come all the way into the city. It was a bit of a downer being in San Jose, after our amazing stays in the beautiful areas of the Nicoya pensisula and Arenal volcano. Further more, finding it in our rental car was a bit difficult, thank goodness for it being close to the zoo, and we were not sure that our car was going to still be in the parking lot around the corner the next day because of the dubious nature of the city. If you need to come into San Jose, definitely stay here. If you don't need to come into San Jose, then definitely stay out by the airport somewhere.

Room Tip: Family suite had a double bed and two sleeper sofas so was good for a family of 4.

Dear guests,
Thank you very much for your review, we are glad you had a pleasant time staying with us.
We regret your perception of San José was not very positive, the capital is a place with many things to offer not only for the local people but also for tourists, spots like the National Museum of Costa Rica, the National Theater, la plaza de la Cultura, the Jade and Gold Museum, the central market, just to name a few, are some of the reasons why many people around the world have and are still visiting San José. Our hotel is located in the heart of the city, sorrounded by a Classic-European Arquitecture, and with the gardens of the ministry of foreign relations in front of us, we consider our locations is strategic for any person that wants to have a good taste of San José and without any safety concerns because San Jose has been declared as one of the safest and least violent cities in Latin-America.
We hope you have the chance to get to know more interesting places in San José next time you come to Costa Rica, once again, thank you very much for staying with us.

Kind regards
Fabrizio Feola

“Great Spot! Glad we found it!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 6, 2012

After booking online you never know what you might get but this place is a hidden gem! If you're looking not to spend too much and still have a clean room, comfortable bed and a good location then I would recommend the Mansion del Parque Bolivar! It's a beautiful house on a quiet street and feels safe. There are only 5 rooms but they are spacious and like I said clean! The shower was nice and we slept really well. There's really no need for A/C since San Jose is a pretty cool climate and there's also cable TV and free wifi. They do not offer free parking but they do offer parking a couple blocks away in a safe parking lot. It costs $1 per hour to park there unless you want to park on the street (Remember to pay cash only, don't accept cards at the parking lot). Knowing it's in the parking lot makes you feel a lot safer about it! It's worth it. The staff is friendly, it was easy to reserve a room and the day we came back from the coast we stopped in to ask if a room was available and it was! They offered the Superior room for a good price and helped take our luggage upstairs. If you're planning on staying 1 night in San Jose because you're going to the west or east coast then this is the best place to stay! It's also very easy to find the main road to the airport! Great location. If I go back to San Jose I will stay here again! Thank you!!

“OK place in a gross city”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 5, 2012

This place is quaint and in a "good" part of town which is still not safe if you are comparing this city to US standards. San Jose is dirty, polluted, and much more dangerous than any of the other cities we visited in Costa Rica (absolutely beautiful country). It is like being in a concrete jungle with barbed wire over every single building everywhere you turn. It almost makes you feel like you are an animal being locked in a prison or a coral of some sort. That being said, the staff is very friendly, Alejandro and Oscar were so nice and had us a breakfast made even though we were leaving too early the next morning to eat the famous breakfast. I heard the restaurant was really good and would have tried it, but we went to cafe mundo down the street instead. A friend from college and I stayed here the last night of our Costa Rican get away and let’s say we won’t be going back. The hotel itself is alright, has old world charm, wood floors and a clean bathroom, but the bed sheets had more than a few long black hairs on them (my friend and I are both blonde) and the floor had dirt/dust on it because when I got into bed after wearing my socks dirt from the floor ended up on the bed. There was one thin sheet between your body and the mattress below which was not as surprising because one of the other hotels had this same issue. If you are used to any kind of luxury, stay somewhere else. If you want an old school former mansion close to the parks in San Jose then I would recommend this place. Again, this place is just enough to get the job done and I would recommend staying out of San Jose completely if you can avoid it. No part of that city is really worth even getting a camera out for. If we must stay near the international airport the night before we leave again we will stay at the Marriott. Oh and I did forgt to mention the heavy, loud beat coming from the music of a nearby club. None of this is their fault being that we happened to stay there on a Saturday night, but definitely come prepared with earplugs!

Dear guests,
First of all we want to thank you for your review, we appreciate your feedback, as it will be taken as an opportunity for our service to improve. We sincerely apologize if the cleaning standards were not as we used to provide to our guests the 365 days x year. In our hotel it is a must for us to ensure that we are providing not only an excellent service, but we are also offering you a place to stay with the highest standards and most of all an accurate clean and comfortable room. We also regret that your perception of San José was not what you expected, the capital is a place with many things to offer: spots like the National Museum of Costa Rica, the National Theater, la plaza de la Cultura, the Jade and Gold Museum, the central market, just to name a few, are some of the reasons why many people around the world have and are still visiting San José, without putting aside the fact that these places are to a walking distance from our hotel. The hotel is located in the heart of the city, sorrounded by a Classic-European Arquitecture, and with the gardens of the ministry of foreign affair just in front of us, we consider our locations is strategic for any person that wants to have a good taste of San José and without any safety concerns because San Jose has been declared as one of the safest and least violent cities in Latin-America.
We hope you have enjoyed your vacations in Costa Rica and thanks again for staying with us.
