“Great service, great sleep & great place!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 21, 2012

My husband and I have stayed here on a few occasions while visiting San Jose and we absolutely LOVE IT! Their beds are the most comfortable we have slept in while on vacation. The entire guesthouse is very clean, beautiful and quiet. The staff are super helpful and Juan at the front desk is so nice, he will try to assist you with anything. Such good value for what you pay, you will not be disappointed!

Room Tip: Rooms on the second floor are quieter, less noise from traffic.

Beautiful place Zen, resting and respectful…Patio reading my book...free café...Just...where is Nespresso ? ;-) ...The staff is discrete, and very obliging...My room was large, a bed of 2m with a good mattress, a clean and modern bathroom… Beautiful old parquet floor. Decoration is a little minimalist, but the whole is resting, without overload… the prices are with the image of this hotel without excessive ornaments, very correct and of a comforting discretion… the place is open and staff is of a Olympian calm

I have been to Hotel "Costa Rica Guesthouse" several times during this year and I think is the best option in Downtown San Jose. I have been in this hotel for business and vacations and I love it. Rooms on the second floor are fresh and clean. I like king size bed and the italian bathroom...The shower is fantastic! The Tico breakfast (famous Gallo Pinto !) is always very good... Muchas gracias a Juan Carlos... The staff is very, very attentive, friendly...

Room Tip: Rooms on upper floor...south side is more quiet...For the large bathroom, north side (street)

I had known and stayed in this hotel for nights and i think this time this place is better...iI have to tell you all, that i was positively surprised how stylish and comfortable this place is, and the price was just 49$ per night ! AMAZING! This hotel is just 100 meters away from the Suprem Court and near to the old traditional town center. We enjoyed very much the big lounge area with a lot of plants, pictures and flowers everywhere. The wood style in my room gives you a feeling of escaping from the city and back to the nature! The rooms are very nice designed and very clean. There was also a very big bed in our room and the staff was realy very very friendly. Also the general manager called Juan Carlos helped us with very good tips how to explore the surrounding are. Big thank you to the Guesthgouse team ! We will come back for sure!!!! Pura vida

Room Tip: 2nd floor on the right are very quiet !

I spent three nights with my sweetheart at this multi-use accomodation in San Jose. The staff is very helpful and friendly-- everything from arranging airport transport, to restaurant recommendations, to letting us leave our excess baggage with them for our two week trip. They went out of their way to be courteous and hospitable-- smiles and well wishes left and right.

We stayed in two separate rooms-- both were large with 17+ foot ceilings, wood floors, huge windows, and extremely simple but attractive decor. The king size beds are comfortable enough and soooo rooomy. The bathrooms were clean but the shower drains were a little slow and slightly stinky. We kept the door to the bathroom closed and this took care of the problem entirely.

The common areas are all clean and well maintained: a large room for eating and watching t.v. And there's a little private room off to the side with a large eating table-- could be used for a group to dine or meet together. We spread out our travel guides and maps on the table and planned our route.

The complimentary breakfast is limited but you can add a fruit plate or other breakfast foods for a few USD. There is a courtyard with tables for eating breakfast in the sun and open air.

There's a parking lot in the back with video surveillance. We did not have a car, but I noticed the staff being vigilant about monitoring this area.

I peeked into some of the other rooms at the guesthouse-- all similarly clean and in lots of different arrangements: bunk beds, single beds, bathrooms en suite, shared bathrooms. All looked of the same quality. The higher floors get more daylight and more traffic noise. If deep sleep is important, you would want to consider a room in back.

Even tho we planned to avoid San Jose alltogether we finally spent a night there and I have to say spending it in this guesthouse was a fortunate choice. We have been there in late August 2012, business there was low, so it was quiet and several rooms were available. We picked "Marina Ballena" (!?) on the upper floor, first door to the left. It was a very spacious room and the bathroom was spartan but HUGE and clean and had some minimalistic touch to it. You can see it on some of the pix here that have been posted already. Warm water worked fine, btw - that is something important for me.
The location is rather convenient, but you certainly will have to walk several minutes or take a cab for a short ride.
Staff was friendly, laundry service worked well and was very reasonably priced. We upgraded the breakfast for some 5US$, since we were facing a lengthy bus trip.WiFi worked excellent.
Oh, and there is that info desk where probably all sorts of arrangements are available, but we only asked some minor question there. This was answered fully, correctly and in a friendly manner.
If you needed 100% silence and darkness for sleeping (like I do), bring earplugs and one of those black satin eye masks. Two very useful items while travelling.
I would go back there and I would recommend this place to friends.

Room Tip: check whats available - rooms (and bathrooms) vary a lot

We stayed here 5 years ago and came back to experience a king sized bed...unheard of in backpackers! Comfy, clean and chilled out with large communal living areas. A helpful tour desk and access to the restaurant across the street at the backpacker hostel. The breakfast was pretty good and we love the free coffee and tea all day!
