“Past it's prime”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 24, 2010

We booked what was listed (and priced) as a 5-star hotel. Well, maybe a few years ago. Seems they changed owners about 6 years ago and it looks like they haven't done a thing to it since. We checked in and walked past ripped carpets and smudged walls to a non-airconditioned room 3 stories up with no elevator. I informed management that we would be cutting our reservations short and leave the next morning. With that, we were offered an air-conditioned suite in a newer building for less money so we decided to stay the 4 days. I felt sorry for the staff who tried to be accomodating, but seemed to be embarrassed by the state of things. One waiter even asked us for a job. The safe in the room didn't work, the shower leaks and the water had seeped throught the walls into the bedroom and stained some clothing that was on the floor. The casino has been closed. The only nice thing was the prime rib night on Thursday which was uncharacteristically not over-priced.

The place is amazing and offers some great views but the fact that they act like a 5 star hotel and are not really poked us the wrong way. Our bill was way too high with ridiculous overpriced entrees and drinks. The worst part was the fact that the owner and his friends party there with hookers and cause their guests grief. Too bad they also yell at their staff as if they are different because they are Costa Ricans. Sad but true....

What a beautiful place! Very personal. The rooms are large, the beds are huge, and the bathrooms are beautiful. Although, it was very pricey. I don't think it's worth the money to be honest with you. BUT the staff will treat you like you are important, and are VERY accommodating. The only complaint is that our wake-up call never happened. Glad I woke up with my alarm! We had a flight to catch. The hotel bar is cute. The restaurant is nice, but overpriced. The view of the central valley is AWESOME. The grounds are beautifully kept. I recommend staying here... either if you don't mind spending the money, or have a discount.

Had booked and confirmed the White House Helicopter for the 30 minute flight to the coast for fishing. It is a three hour drive over rough roads. The White House Owner decided he would rather go fishing and took the helicopter before we got there and then to top it off, had his staff tell us that it was broke! Fortunately, the staff was so upset they told us what the real story was.

What a view. There are very few hotels in this area that would be considered of the White House caliber. All of the rooms are named after Presidents, and the building is quite impressive when you drive up - it does look like a mini White House! Our room had a shared balcony, and it was quite spacious. There are suites that were very impressive we took a peek at.

The Restaurant below is one of the few places you can get a USDA steak in Costa Rica. The lobby is small, but nice and th epool of the hotel over looks the view pictured. They have recently opened a casino at this hotel, although small, it's very nice.

Please get driving directions before attempting to find this hotel, it's very confusing to locate!
