“Very nice!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 20, 2014

We only had one night in this hotel at the end of our trip, but we would definitely return. The hotel, restaurant, and grounds are beautiful. We had an excellent meal at the restaurant, both the beef and salmon were expertly prepared and arranged. The pool also looked very nice but we did not have time to swim.

We stayed at Alta yesterday and we were blown away by the service and the Spaniard/Colonial influence of this hotel. Carlos at reception was particularly very helpful and went way out of his way allowing me to take pictures of the premises, turning the outdoor lights on for a better photo composition and chatting at the upper function room area. The next morning the breakfast included in the service next to the pool with Costa Rican flavours couldn't be better to start our wedding destination getaway in this country, thank you. Highly recommended.

Stayed first night in San Jose after late flight. Hip and chic feel to hotel. Farther from airport than we thought ($40 each way by cab, about 25 min drive). Not so fun fact: Costa Rican cab drivers are scarier than any in NYC, Paris, London, etc. Truly terrifying. Fast and filled with rage while driving but very sweet when you talk to them.
Regardless hotel was nice and free breakfast was great. Costa Rican eggs, beans and rice, homemade tortilla, fruits, and juices. Small but nice grounds.

This hotel was recommended to me for our stay in CR, yet we had no idea just how special this little Boutique Hotel was! We arrived @ the Alta Hotel mid afternoon, just in time to see the beautiful daytime view from our top floor balcony. By the time we were ready for cocktails, the sun was starting to set and it was an absolutely spectacular view from our table in the hotel's restaurant.
This restaurant has a wonderful reputation throughout the area and it's well deserved with delicious food and an excellent wait staff. Staying @ the Alta was the best choice for us. I was in CR for some extensive dental work and my husband was there to support me and to relax and enjoy the stay. Over the 10 day period, we ate many of our meals @ the restaurant and found the waiters always very attentive. Breakfast was especially nice, a beautiful morning view with freshly brewed Costa Rican coffee or a surprise Cappaccino! The hotel itself was well appointed with quality furnishings and it had a beautiful pool. I found the Hotel staff to be extremely pleasant, helpful and most accommodating. All in all, staying @ the Alta was a wonderful experience and we definitely plan to visit it again on our next trip to Costa Rica.

Room Tip: All of the rooms (only 23 or so) face the beautiful hills and city below. We stayed on the top floor...

I had to make a quick trip to Costa Rica and had NO time to plan. I first picked a well known chain hotel and my daughter and I hated it. Alta was recommended to me and I will forever be grateful for that move.
I was recovering from surgery and the hotel staff was AMAZING. They cooked special for me and I have never been so pampered. The chef is incredible and worth every penny. The breakfast that comes complimentary is fruit, coffee, juice and rolls with good jelly. For those of us that are used to stuffing ourselves with carbs for breakfast at the American hotel; embrace the light fare and not dragging all day.
There is a bus stop across the street from the hotel and although they will happily call a cab for you, they will also educate you on the bus system. I was on a limited budget and actually enjoyed navigating the bus system (and I only know six words of Spanish). You are between San Jose (old city) and Escuala (American style city and mall).
The balcony off of each room sports amazing views and is an incredible place to relax and read.
The rooms are simple and comfortable. There are reading nooks tucked throughout the hotel. This is a 23 room hotel. Not a massive resort, but the most relaxing and laid back I have ever been.
The decor is straight-up Restoration Hardware and very handsome.
All outlets are American type.
The wifi works great most of the time.
I needed to rest, relax and recuperate. This hotel rocked in every aspect for that.

The hotel was beautiful (especially the view). The service was fantastic. The beds were amazing! The food was great as well (but a very small continental breakfast). The only down side is that it is out of the way (but that's how you get a great view!).

We received a very warm welcome from this hotel the minute we walked through the doors into reception. The interior décor was extremely stylish with quirky furnishings at every turn. We loved the pool area bursting with colour and the views from our room, both at sunrise and sunset, were gorgeous. You could see San Jose spread out before you and the mountains looming in the distance. The bedroom was very comfortable with simple but smart furniture, good mood lighting and a wonderful big shower. The well-stocked mini bar was a bonus! We only ate dinner in the restaurant once but the food was beautifully presented and delicious. Only note of discontent was the breakfast which was minimalist! Very small pieces of toast (we had to ask for more), a few bits of fruit, coffee and juice. Given how early we were setting out, we were concerned that this wouldn't sustain us! But overall we loved our brief two-night stay here and would heartily recommend it.
