“wonderful spa-like hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 15, 2012

Casa Cristal is a beautiful hotel in Escazu. It only has about 10 rooms like a bed and breakfast but the layout gives the feeling of a spa. I think all but 1 of the rooms have private balconies with gorgeous views. There are many areas to relax, read, talk enjoy the views etc. We personally loved the gardens and the patio with the koi pond. Breakfast is included and the owner, Zeida is a wonderful cook. We also ate dinner there most nights and again Zeida created the most wonderful dishes. The pool is nice but I don't think it is heated. It felt rather cool and the air temps were only in the 70's so we didn't use it. I would definatley recommend you have Victor (Zeida's husband) pick you up from the airport as Escazu is difficult to navigate even for taxis. In fact, Victor showed a taxi the way to another hotel on our way to Casa Cristal. Just goes to show how wonderful Victor and Zeida are...they want to make sure EVERYONE has a great stay in Costa Rica. Although the hotel is isolated, my husband and I did enjoy walking into town. It really is not that far but it is confusing. We used our phone GPS and our memories of landmarks to find our way.
Zeida was born in the USA and raised in Miami. Victor is from Cuba and lived in Miami. Needless to say, their english is very good.

Room Tip: We stayed in Master Suite and it was definately worth the price

The staff is awesome. They were very helpful and accommodating. The hotel is in a good residential neighborhood and about a 10 minute cab ride from a shopping area. There is very little, if anything, within a 10-15 minute walk of the hotel. If uour looking for a hotel near clubs and bars, keep looking. This not that. It's secluded with a nice view of the mountains and downtown area. But since Cabs are cheap in CR so it is less than $5 for a trip to the nearby shopping area. As others have mentioned, the physical location of he hotel is tricky, so be sure your driver has the phone number to the front desk, it may take several phone calls to arrive. However once you get in the general neighborhood you'll see handmade signs wih arrows pointing out directions on telephone poles and stop signs. I would definitely stay again.

This hotel was our first night in Costa Rica as we arrived at San José airport at 7.pm and after 48h travel (problems with Delta Airlines), we were more than pleased to have booked a night in this very nice, clean, and confortable hotel. We took the master suite bedroom, king size bed, and I must say "king size view" over San Jose. We paid for the airport pick up (30$/ 15.000C). The staff was very kind and attentive. The receptionist gave us all the information we needed to visit San José and also to get the bus to Puerto Viejo de Talamanca. The taxi from Casa Cristal to the center of San José cost us 6000C but to come back to the hotel, we took the public bus to Escazu ( only 300C/0,6$). A bit disappointed about the swimming pool which was dirty when we arrived, but the staff was cleaning it on the second day. Breakfast was ok (fresh fruit/juice/coffe/toasts/omelette)

Nice place with a very good view, but we were a little bit disappointed of our room and especially bathroom,so tiny and not clean...swimming pool was unbelievably dirty.. On pictures they showed the best room they have, but standard room is completely different,so just be ready for it!
Place is not bad, but not 5 stars, for sure!! Max 4-

Casa Cristal is a small boutique hotel that takes pride in the personalized service offered to its guests. We have never claimed to be a chain 5-star hotel, neither do we intend to be one. Our website shows every single suite that we offer, and specifies the size of the beds in each one and the RATE. Some guests, unfortunately, expect to receive a master suite even though they are only paying for a standard suite. When these particular guests checked in, they never said anything about being unhappy with the suite they had been assigned to. We would have gladly offered them a different suite, since all the suites in Casa Cristal are completely different. These guests were more focused on complaining than on enjoying the many details that they certainly took for granted and that they would have never received in a chain 5-star hotel. For intance, they checked in past 10:00 p.m, and I personally checked them in. The restaurant closes at ten, but they requested to have dinner, and I offered to cook for them, although the restaurant was already closed. They went into their room and left me waiting for the order. After twenty minutes, I decided to call them to ask them what they wanted to order, and they said they had changed their mind. On the other hand, the suite they were in has a balcony, chain 5-star hotels do not have balconies. The next day they asked for airport transportation and the driver arrived ten minutes early. I called them to let them know their transportation was ready whenever they were ready, and she got upset because he was early. She was not being expected to leave immediately, the driver just wanted to be sure he was not late for the pick up. They checked out one hour late and did not even ask if that was okay, and we did not ask them to pay anything extra either. While they were walking out of the hotel, the gentleman made a remark about Cuban cigars and I personally gave him a free cigar as a gift. We seriously go out of our way to attempt to please all of our guests, however, unfortunately some people are just never satisfied.

One of the best places I've ever stayed. The location is tucked away, but close enough to to everything via taxi. the best part is the attention to detail. They really know how to treat their guests.

Room Tip: Any room you choose have the best view.

We stayed in the triple suite and absolutely loved the view and room. ALL the staff were very accommodating and attentive. The hotel is unique, in a very quiet area and very personable. Abonda said it best. Anything to make you happy! We had no trouble finding the place as we took a taxi and the driver was extremely knowledgeable. Any one who travels to Escazu must know local road knowledge is a real asset as rare is the house number, street name or route. Taxi's from and to the hotel to restaurants etc. were usually about $8 each way. We ate at the hotel often as the food was very good there too. Zeida's Gallo Pinto is the best we ate anywhere.

The people who run this hotel really know how to treat you. The building is just outside of Escazu, but don't worry about the distance -- it's a $3 cab from Escazu and the airport cabs will charge $40 but that's to get anywhere. What you end up with in this beautiful hotel is privacy overlooking the gorgeous lights and mountains of San Jose. The owners are so kind, speak beautiful English, and will bend over backwards to help you. The long list of activities and tours will occupy you for ages and the meals are all made as though you have a personal chef! Add to this the decor and elegant koi pond and pool... it's a dream vacation spot. I've been to 25 countries and this is the hotel experience that I place on the top of my "Best Hotels" List. Small, private, but all the best amenities.
