“Beautiful, good value”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 26, 2012

It was a beautiful hotel on a hill outside the city of San Jose and a great deal for the price I paid. Absolutely would recommend to anyone. The staff were great but since it is a small hotel sometimes there was no one at the desk or the door. I got locked out once. They forgot about a promise they made in my reservation, but overall they were nice and very accommodating.

Eventhough the last part of the road is quite bad and might discourage some before getting to Casa Cristal but when one arrives at the front it's a WOW...

Room Tip: It is worth paying a little extra to have an upstairs bedroom where you have an super view of San Jo...

This "boutique" hotel is very small and very modern feeling, and it really does have a beautiful view of San Jose from almost everywhere except the "downstairs room" (#8), which is where my wife and I stayed on the last night of our Costa Rica vacation. The owners, Victor and Zeida, were both very nice and welcoming, and they clearly work very hard to make this place a success. Zeida told us that she designed, oversaw the construction and decorated this place, and she did a really amazing job. It is beautiful. And as I said, they were both very accommodating: Victor actually came and picked us up since our Grayline bus driver couldn't take us directly to the hotel. He also checked us in and showed us to our room; no other staff in evidence at that time of the day (3 p.m.) After we checked in we went upstairs to the restaurant, where Zeida seemed to be taking care of the whole place by herself. An hour or so later we went up to the bar to have a drink before dinner and enjoy the sunset; weirdly, she brought me a champagne flute as a glass for my Heineken - that was strange. In any case, the bed was great, the room was very clean and very nice, and the food was good, though not exceptional. In general we were very happy with the Casa Cristal, and look forward to staying there again. Next time, though, we will try to book one of the upstairs rooms, which all seem to have a great view.

Room Tip: Room #8 is lower priced than the others for a good reason: no view.

We arrived early evening with difficulty, as others have, in finding the property. The hotel was clean and tidy, but most certainly not a 4 or 5 star by North American standards. The view of San Jose is spectacular but if you have the downstairs room, you will likely feel like you're staying in someone's basement and there is no view, unless you want to look at the parking garage. It's true, we paid very little but when you add the $30 to get to the airport in the morning, as we did, it's not a spectacular bargain. There was some socializing at the bar by the hotel owners and their friends, we felt a bit like we were intruding on a party. However, the morning breakfast was nice, this was our last night in Costa Rica and we really should have booked an 'airport' hotel. I will admit, I was disappointed as the Trip Advisor reviews sounded wonderful, my experience was not.

Room Tip: A room with a view, or don't bother.

We are very sorry that you were disappointed. The night that you arrived there were a few people at the restaurant that are returning guests, and act as friends of ours, but they were staying at Casa Cristal, just like you. You did not intrude and were served very nicely and attended to as every guest does. You requested a suite with a view immediately as you arrived, and I, the owner, personally offered you a master suite for only $35 more than you had originally paid for the standard, which is $124 (although the master suite is $165). You did not want to pay the extra $35, and decided to stay in the standard suite which faces the garden. You even told me that the room had no windows, and I pointed out to you that the room has a total of seven windows. Everyone wants to have a wonderful suite with the best view, but unfortunately you get what you pay for as everywhere in the world.

Beautiful secluded hotel in the hills of Bello Horizante de Escazu.
Not as hard to find as the other post might suggest, if you are comfortable with travel in Central America you will have no trouble at all.
Zeida & Victor are excellent host. Stunning views of the central Valley and still 5 minutes from downtown Escazu, 12 minutes to the Multiplaza, and 20 minutes to the airport in the early morning.
Definate recommendation.
We will stay at Casa Cristal again.

Room Tip: All rooms are nice, balcony rooms are the choice.

We had a stop over in San Jose, and were lucky to choose Casa Cristal. The place is wonderful, quiet and has fantastic views. Zeida, Victor and the staff were warm and welcoming. They arranged our pick-up and drop offs. The hotel is a quick trip to Tobias Bolanos Airport, so perfect if you have an early morning departure on Nature Air. The food is also wonderful. We wouldn't hesitate to stay again given the chance.

Room Tip: The extra money for a room with a view is well worth it.

The hotel is decorated in simple, modern, decor that isn't quite top quality, but the service is excellent. The views are pretty and you're out of the heat and stink of San Jose, but you are quite stranded there. Not a thing to do nearby. Fine for your transit to the parts of Costa Rica you want to see. The "restaurant" was visited solely by the few guests, and, even more, by friends of management, who were not really dining but socializing, unobtrusively, at the bar. The food was tasty but limited, not the fine dining experience the web site might lead you to believe. All in all, a good value for the money, but we're likely to head back to our old standard, the fabulous, faux-colonial Grano de Oro. PS: make sure your cab driver has a map or phone--it's hard to find.

Room Tip: Room 5 has the best view and location
