“Decent Hotel in Light Industrial Area”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 9, 2012

This was our first hotel after landing in San Jose. The hotel itself is OK, but it is located on a narrow busy street filled with trucking companies, automotive parts suppliers, and other light industry businesses. There is plenty of noise on the street and it reverberates against the two story hotel. The hotel is small and the service at breakfast was less than average. The staff needs to be much more attentive. The hotel is west of the airport. I would recommend another area perhaps away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Room Tip: I have no qualms about the room. It is the noise outside once you are out of your room.

We just needed a place to stay for one night on our trip from the Caribbean coast back to Guanacaste on the west coast. My husband found the Beacon Hotel online; we didn't make reservations but just drove to it (using the help of the nice lady on Garmin!). It turned out to be a beautiful little place. The rooms were large and very pretty. The beds and linens were top notch. The internet access was quick and available. The only negative was that the small, but lovely, pool was not clean and was unusable. The area around the pool was peaceful and inviting, so that was too bad. We ate dinner in the restaurant. I had lamb chops and my husband had tenderloin, and we were both happy with our choices.

Room Tip: They all looked good to me. We had a standard deluxe, but they offer suites if you need one. The b...

My tour company booked us into Hotel Beacon for the night prior to our Costa Rica tour. It is a comfortable and clean hotel with large rooms and comfortable beds. I thought the towels could use replacements, showing their wear.

Although the tile was clean, there were stains on the floor tile that had a "soiled" appearance. That bothered me.

The staff was friendly and there is a nice bar and outstanding restaurant called Muse on site. We had thumbs up fish and steaks here that were a solid 4 stars and moderately priced.

The hotel has a well equipped fitness room and a spa with sauna. They offer a Costa Rican breakfast with coffee, nice fruit, toast, and the standard rice and beans. American breakfasts can be ordered for an additional cost.

One issue I had is that the hotel is located just outside San Jose in a town called Escazu and is hard to find. I returned from downtown in a cab and even he struggled to find it after calling the hotel twice on his mobile phone. Hardly an streets are labeled and houses and businesses do not have address numbers in this country.

Beacon Escazu is sweet little hotel, hidden in the curvy roads of San Jose. The room was clean and simply decorated, which I liked. The shower is amazing and the interior patio was a peaceful addition to the room. The staff was helpful as we needed to make travel arrangements to and from the airport and city. Breakfast was included with the room and was good, typical Costa Rican food. We enjoyed our dinner at The Muse.
Having never traveled to San Jose - which is a very simple city - we were grateful for a comfortable and safe place to stay for 2 nights.

Our travel agent booked us at the Hotel Beacon Escazu for the beginning and end of a Costa Rican vacation. We were quite delighted when we arrived to find such a clean and well appointed hotel, especially after spending a week in a very remote area of Nicaragua with only basic amenities. It is a small boutique hotel with a fairly open concept. The front desk staff was pleasant and helpful both visits. There was no problem parking our vehicle in the underground lot. We ate at the hotel restaurant, The Muse, and were very satisfied with our meal. The restaurant overlooks the hotel's beautiful tropical garden.
There were a few concerns worth pointing out. Both rooms we stayed in had a musty smell and we had a hard time figuring out how to adjust the room air.
I also felt that there was a certain lack of privacy. The curtains and drapes of the room had to be kept closed at all times so that people couldn't see into our room as they passed by. This resulted in a bit of a closed in feeling.
The second time we stayed there, there was a huge party somewhere in the hotel. It sounded like it was outside our room and the noise kept us from having a good night's sleep. I mentioned this in the morning and a gentleman sitting in an office behind the front desk seemed to dismiss it as a regular occurrence.
The last concern I would like to point out was that it was extremely difficult to locate in spite of studying the map and landmarks on the map. It was even more difficult to get to the airport from the hotel. A 30 minute drive ended up taking 1 1/2 hours. It would be helpful if the hotel provided step by step directions to get to the airport. (We were unable to get a GPS from our rental agency).
In spite of the drawbacks I mentioned, I would gladly stay here again.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a bit of privacy where people aren't passing by all the time.

I stayed here for 3 nights because of business in San Jose. It was a cushy place without the price. Staff spoke great English even tho my companion was fluent in Spanish. We took a cheap easy bus ride into the city, and found good Costa Rican and great Mexican food within a few blocks of the hotel.

One never knows what one is getting one's self into when booking sight unseen (except for internet reviews and hotel site) but .... Hotel Beacon Escazu was indeed a pleasant surprise. This is a very pretty and well maintained hotel in Escazu which is just outisde of San Jose. The staff are FABULOUS! They were all very kind and accommodating. The restaurant apparently has a new chef (very good food) so we are guessing that the fact that it was almost empty the three nights we stayed at Beacon Escazu must mean they were indeed in need of a new chef. Hats off to senior management for having such a great team working with your clients. We would indeed stay at Beacon Escazu again when needing a place in the San Jose area and will not hesitate to recommend it to anyone in the same situation.
