“Great Stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 25, 2014

Went to Mirador de Quetzales in May 2014 with a school trip and we all had a great time. The cabins were really cute and the beds were super comfortable. The cabins were clean and cozy. We saw a ton of wild life. We saw both the male and female quetzal bird, along with hummingbirds and so much more! There were a lot of different trails to explore on property. The staff were really nice and the food was good. the view from the cabin was breathtaking. Definitely would come back to this place:)

Room Tip: We stayed in cabin 1.

After a couple of hot steamy days on the Osa Peninsula the Mirador de Quetzales was a pleasant surprise. It was so nice and cool. The hummingbirds were so tame. I could have watched them for hours. The resident dogs were fun too. All the people were very friendly. When we were there there were only 2 other cabins occupied so it was very calm. The hike was fun too. We saw lots of quetzels. The fact that both breakfast and dinner are included in the room rate makes this place a bargin. It was a very nice respite between the hot Pacific and Caribbean coasts.

We stayed there one night (mid of July) and enjoyed it very much. The place is of course very cold for Costa Rica (2650 m ASL), especially when it is not sunny or in the evening. But that was just what we wanted: mountain sites.
The forest there is absolutely beautiful. The trail of "Mirador" is very nice, as well as the view from the cabins. The cabins were very clean, we had a small electric heater which was enough for the night, many extra blankets and a nice little complete bathroom. Especially the family and the staff of the hotel were always very nice and helpful!!!
We are absolutely happy with the package we´ve got there (standard price). There were also breakfast and dinner included (very nice basic kitchen!!) as well as a guided tour in the morning to search for the Quetzal. Altough totally out of Quetzal season, we found some females (also beatiful) and had a nice trip with the friendly guy from the hotel. We are very happy that we chose Mirador de Quetzales for our stay!!! A very charming place with al lot of wood, nice looking rooms and paintings on the walls... The restaurant has a open fire place at the evening (very cosy) and during the day a nice view to 3 small hummingbird feeding stations. See also our pictures. All the best for the family and a nice stay to all vistors! Best regards, young couple from Austria/Germany

Our Tip: take some jungle boots with you for the hotel trail!! As well as enough warm and dry clothes.

Our experience at Mirador de Quetzales was amazing. The staff is comprised almost entirely of family members and all are very warm, inviting, and respectful. The food was amazing and the wood stove kept the main lodge nice and toasty. The cabins are quaint and comfortable, though rustic. The included quetzal hike delivered on its promise of quetzales plus many other beautiful endemic tropical birds. I highly recommend Mirador de Quetzales for on off-the-beaten-path experience that will be truly unforgettable.

Thank you so much for taking your time and writing this review!
For us hospitality business is really about service and now we are really working to improve everything... From extending the hummingbirds are to the whole rooms area to a herbs garden, solar cells for the showers (And yes... sun can really heat the water here!) and so much more.

So, whenever you are back in the area, you will notice an improved yet warm and cozy Mirador de Quetzales.

Thanks again for your review!

The very basic cabins are certainly not under-priced, and the building quality is more suited to the hot coastal areas than to what is effectively a sub-alpine lodge, but there were plenty of blankets and a heater available. Hot water in the shower. The staff was helpful and friendly and the food good, with the restaurant offering a view of feeding hummingbirds in the foreground and the valley in the backgrounds. And on our tour we saw plenty of quetzals, which was the whole purpose of coming here to stay!

Dear Mr, Swiss,

We thank you very much for your review on our lodge!

For us is so important to get feedback on the hotel and specially now when we are having a major makeover in many areas of the lodge, including gardens, cabins, and a lot more.

As you now we are a family of the area and learned the hospitality business on the way and even though our desire is to fill everyone's desires sometimes we don't really know how to get there.
And these sort of reviews are really the stepping stones for our next moves.

Thanks again for your time on this and we hope that the next time in the area you give us a chance to show you the improvements on the property!

The lodge is beautiful and virtually empty in May. The weather was cool and it rained in the afternoon - which turned out to be a blessing. When it rains, the quetzal shelters under the branches of the lush vegetation allowing incredibly long views of their resplendent glory. We watched a quetzal feed its young - amazing. The nature hike is $13 per person in May if you do not stay at the lodge. So even if you do not have time to stay, it is an incredible bargain. We took a cab from Cartago.

The showers all over rural Costa Rica are a bit of a challenge - lukewarm at best. But we are campers and relish in a clean fresh shower anywhere - so probably not a good judge of that particular aspect. The main dining room is rustic with a gorgeous view of hummingbirds and the forest.

Best experience of birds anywhere so far in Central America.

I almost didn't stay here, because of some of the negative reviews. But it's actually among my best overall experiences in four years of coming to Costa Rica. I guess it all depends on what you're looking for. Beautiful uncrowded hiking trails with a variety of birds--including close-up views of collared redstarts and a pair of black guans--and lovely waterfall with bromeliads everywhere. Gorgeous hummingbirds. And yes--many striking views of the Quetzales on the guided morning hike. Jason, our guide, was very knowledgeable about other birds, even though he focused on the dramatic quetzales. Beautiful flowers tended by the family--and FOR the family, not just the tourists. Other reviewers are right about how cool it can be at night, but wrong about the food--my dinner was excellent and generous. Great overall value!

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Watching the Resplendent Quetzal is a magical experience... you see its iridescent feathers, its wavy flight and can understand... why these creatures were considered to be a representative of God. The Resplendent Quetzal is an astonishing sight... But, the setting to see it is as important as the bird itself. Being in a peaceful setting, where the beauty of nature meets the beauty of humanity happens to be an ultimate amazing experience. This, happens in MIrador de Quetzales. It is not that you will meet fashion models... skinny tall women... No! You will meet the Serrano Family. Transparent, a little naive, smiling, decent, honest, easy laughter, easy hugs. People that are willing to help, to make you have a wonderful stay in their farm and their house. Staying with them and have a talk at the edge of their fireplace is a compulsory experience.. never mind if you don't speak any Spanish... or that they don't speak English. That is what traveling is about... isn't it? Enjoy, learn, laugh, wear a good jacket and feel the highlands rainforest among the quetzals, the buzzing of dozens of hummingbirds, and the kindness of the Serrano Family. ... more   less
