“Ocean, Booze, and Iguanas - Oh My!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 10, 2012

This was our first stay at Villa Roca and we are definitely thinking about booking another trip! We has a late arrival from the airport and the staff were more than accommodating in checking us in late, having our room ready, and having someone to greet us at the gate when we pulled up. The room was very comfortable and our terrace opened up right to the ocean! It was a beautiful sight to wake up to every morning. Our breakfast was a served three course meal every morning - and it was already included in our room rate! The infinity pool was very relaxing to sit by every day and the staff was always there to assist us with anything we needed. Gerald was very helpful in helping us find restaurants and activities to do during the day, and always followed up the next day to ask us how it went. I highly recommend this hotel to anyone!

Room Tip: Room 4 is the cheapest and therefore the smallest, but it has a fantastic view! With the pool, the...

This is my second stay at the Villa Roca and I've really enjoyed both visits. The staff are very attentive and extremely accommodating. They are also very helpful and knowledgable in setting up local tours and excursions. Their recommendations most certainly assured I had a better time while I was in Manuel Antonio.

But the real highlight of this place is the grounds. They are stunningly beautiful, with more varieties of colorful plant life than you can imagine. Everything is decorated in a soothing white and blue style that is consistent and pleasing throughout. The rooms are clean, if not entirely modern, but still a good value for what you get. And besides, with a gorgeous infinity pool overlooking the ocean, I didn't spend much time in my room anyway. When I did, I really appreciated the air conditioning (which can't be assumed in Costa Rica) and the free WiFi. I can't think of any place in MA I'd rather stay.

Room Tip: If wifi is critical, pick lower numbered rooms as they are closer. Also, I would choose those rooms...

The property is beautiful with landscaping and views. The pool is amazing. The hot tub area private and relaxing. The staff seemed to be always cleaning and making things look good. It is built on a hill so things are a little bit of a hike. The rooms are pretty basic, but were clean and well maintained. The A/C worked fine to keep you comfortable. I arrived early and left late. They were happy to hold my bag and accomadate me. The staff was friendly and seemed always happy to help. I stayed in late April, which gives a great value.

I just got back from this Hotel and thought it was pretty spotless clean and in an awesome location. Its near the State Park and nice eateries. Wonderful view from pool looking out to the Pacific Ocean. What it lacks is really that charm of the other hotels in the area. Owners are super nice, but maybe they have just been operating the hotel to long and maybe have lost that gusto/interest that was there once a upon a time... I dont see any money being dumped back into the property to give it that charm one would expect for the price. I also had some issues with booking excursions in that we wanted a Sunset cruise and was told because of the change of the seasons none was available. Now, I am sitting down at the pool and overhear a guest talking about Sunset cruise... We ended up changing the morning cruise to a sunset cruise...?? Down at the Marina there must have been 5 boats going out for Sunset cruises. When we arrived nobody took us around to explain the hotel and its amenities. Further when we were leaving I was explained the different types of cabs which would have been helpful at the beginning of our stay. Some are fakes and others are real... If you needed any kind of water by the pool you would either need to bring it yourself our hike up several (not a few/several) steps to the main office where they could be purchased and billed to your room tab. No real pool service when you need it 11 30-4pm. What you get is Happy Hour 4-8 and very little crowd that shows or is closed before 8pm. Issues also with WIFI and electricity going out.... During the 4 nights were were there it went out 6 times and sometimes for more than a couple of hours... What it is lacking is possibly more circuit breakers to handle all the electrical needs (air conditioning). Staff was excellent and great little breakfast in the morning.

Room Tip: All the rooms are pretty basic and have a view of the Pacific. Different price points for your budg...

It's odd to read such a variety of reviews. My partner and I stayed here for 6 days and enjoyed every moment. Spotless (albeit sparse) and quiet room that was rather large (6B) and in very good repair, world class views, the entire staff was never less than gracious. Nice pool scene, happy hour, great breakfasts and terrific location.

True, MA isn't P-town or Fire Island (thank godness) but charming, very gay friendly, and with several top-tier restaurants.

No complaints here...we will be back.

The hotel was clean and well run. The grounds were beautiful and the view amazing. We've gone to many of the gay sunny vacation spots (Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Palm Springs, Puerto Vallarta) and Manual Antonio is now our favorite. A fitness option would be nice, but if you walk to the beach - you will get plenty of exercise.

The property has nice views and is beautfiully landscaped. The rooms are spartan but clean. The service was very unpredicatable - everything from over-the-top ingratiating to calm and polite to down right rude. Most disappointing is that this is not really a gay area of Costa Rica. Maybe for the second-world, but not if you are used to something like Puerto Vallarta. This is the only gay hotel in the area; and there is only one gay bar (above a local restaurant) and one (musty-smelling) disco that has a cover charge every night. Once was enough for me.

Hi. Thank you very much for choosing Villa Roca for your vacation in Manuel Antonio.
Yes, all our rooms have spectacular views but our philosophy is to not overload the rooms with furnishing. Our interior is “European Style inspired", more light and bright.
Sorry about your different experience with our service. We will work very hard to go back to offer only our “over-the-top”-service.
Since many years Costa Rica is THE top gay destination in Central America and Manuel Antonio is together with San José THE top gay destination in Costa Rica.
Certainly, Costa Rica is not as Mexico and Manuel Antonio is not Puerto Vallarta but many gay-lesbian travelers love Manuel Antonio like it is with its gay places and its many gay friendly places.
Furthermore Manuel Antonio is not only gay and gay friendly. It is perhaps the nicest place in the whole country. The Manuel Antonio National Park for example is according to Forbes magazine one of the thirteen most beautiful parks in the world and our beaches and the Playita are internationally known and very popular.
