We stayed at hotel mono azul for three nights during a trip to CR. First off, the negatives - be sure to negotiate prices, especially if you're going during the green season! We agreed to a room costing $70 a night, just to arrive with a sign at the door saying that we could 'negotiate our own price' but since we hadn't, and had already reserved with a credit card, that option wasn't open to us. Second, though they told us there were safes in the room, there were not. We locked our passports and money in our suitcase and nothing happened, but it still made me a little nervous. Also - there were signs warning us that there may be no water, and the power went out briefly a couple times. Finally - if you're a light sleeper you might want to stay elsewhere. We booked a room with A/C which was loud and rickety. We were also staying during the rainy season and the roof of the hotel is a tin roof so it sounds like a freight train above your head. I wore earplugs and it still was a muted roar when raining.
On the good side - it was clean, comfortable, and the staff was very friendly. We didn't realize that there wouldn't be phones available, but we needed to call our family to let them know we arrived safely. The staff kindly let us use their phone to call to the US. They also have internet available for a very reasonable fee. We only ate at the restaurant for breakfast, but it was decent, if overpriced, but the coffee was good! They have a great gift shop - you'll find the same stuff elsewhere but it's cheaper at the Mono Azul and all the profits go to help save the titi monkey. Even though we overpaid, I still think it was a value compared with the $200+ rooms offered elsewhere.
