“Awesome place to stay!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 25, 2011

The staff at Hotel Mono Azul are the best! They were very patience and helpful to my mother who at times could be pretty difficult at times. Jennifer and Chip (Owners) are super sweet and a pleasure to talk to. The hotel is right in the middle of everything and just a 10min bus ride to the beach and 5 min to the town of Quepos. While you're waiting for the bus, make sure you look up in the trees, you might see a troop of titi monkey swinging by!

Room Tip: Pick villa 1A, it's right by the pool and plus you'll feel like you're in the jungle wit...

I stayed here for 3 nights recently and this was the only place during a 2 week vacation that I didn't like. The staff was rude, the rooms were very outdated and resembled prison cells or zoo cages in the middle of the rainforest. There are no phones in the rooms and the housekeeping was pretty bad with lots of bugs in the room. If you have trouble walking up steep stairs, get a room on the same side as the front desk because otherwise you will be lugging your luggage up quite a few steep stairs. It was not easy.

The restaurant is very good for a casual place and the owners are wonderful. Their location is very convenient to the public bus.

While there are some positives, i would not recommend staying here. I think you can do better elsewhere in Manuel Antonio for a similar price.

Room Tip: See if you can get a room on the same side of the street as the restaurant and front desk.

We stayed in a villa on the other side of thet street, where the mono azul mainhouse is located.

We had a large and a small bed, a TV, a kitchen which had everything we needed, and warm water in the bathroom. We enjoyed the pool and the privacy we had up there!

the breakfast (not included) was delicous(!!!!) and the staff was helpful and friendly.

Being that it was my first trip to Costa Rica, I didn't realize that Quepos was pretty far from Manuel Antonio (where pretty much all of the action is happening in that area). We paid $40 a night for a double room which by US standards seems like a bargain but in CR it seemed pricey for the accomodations. At similar hotels, we received breakfast along with the rate. If that were the case, it would've been a better deal (breakfast ran around $20 for 2 people each morning). It was clean and the staff was nice enough but I felt like for the distance, it wasn't a great deal. The bus does stop right in front of the hotel but if you need to get to MA quickly, the taxi was $8. As much as we spent on taxis (the bus only runs until 7pm) we should've stayed closer. It was fine but if you are there for a short time, I recommend somewhere that is actually in MA so you aren't spending all of your time traveling back and forth.

For my first solo adventure outside of my own country, Mono Azul was an excellent choice! Chip and Jennifer were very kind to answer all of my questions prior to my trip to Costa Rica and upon my arrival, the staff was very helpful in making excellent excursion recommendations. I enjoyed wonderful breakfasts and visits with other travelers in their restaurant. I enjoyed learning about the Kids Saving the Rainforest venture and meeting Chula (Chip and Jennifer's dog) and Thomas (Pia of KSTR's dog). I would definitely return to Mono Azul in my next visit to Costa Rica!

On our vacation after leaving San Jose, we parked it at Mono Azul for a couple nights. The hotel is older and not elegant by any means. The rooms remind me of some roadside motels in Florida...however, the resteraunt is cool and the staff very nice. At first I was a bit taken back at the quality of the room...but it quickly grows on you... and by the time you leave, you don't want to leave. It has a really neat charm to it and the food in the resteraunt is very good. Definately recommend.

We had high hopes for this place but were disappointed. It is far from the beach >5km. There was a smell of dampness all over and being right next to the road was not something we could adjust to. Would not recommend if you want to stay with family and want access to beach.

The staff was considerate when we wanted to move hotels hours after checking in. Would like to thank for that.
