My first thought was, wow, this place is well-kept and compared to other places of similar cost, it seemed much better. The landscaping will continue to make it look nicer and nicer as the plants mature. They have all sorts of fruit trees that are available to the guests to pick from when it is in season. The parking area is well lit at night--nice and safe for our car. The rooms were good-sized, including the shower which also had dispensers for shampoo and soap. Cable TV, free wi-fi (and also computers with Internet available in the office), and the clean and modern accommodations were just the beginning for us. We were so impressed with the staff! They helped us plan our activities (we wanted to avoid tourist traps) and gave us tips on saving some money where possible. Without them, our experience would have been much less enjoyable.
One of our favorite memories came from a connection the owners have with a man with a private boat for hire. He took us on an afternoon of snorkeling and fishing all along the shores of the nearby islands. The boat was small; 6 people would be crowded in it, but it was plenty big enough and fast enough for several hours of freedom to explore. I recommend that you schedule a few hours for this activity but to arrange it with the staff in advance, since the boat and driver may not be available.
Also, check out the Curu Reserve! This is worth the $10 it cost to get in, for sure. We saw many animals of the rainforest and even had a fawn eat from our hands before a monkey warmed up to us, eventually cuddling in our laps. The beach here was quite long and the trails throughout the property provided entertainment and education. There is a variety of vegetation and terrain in this small section of land, perfect for teaching kids and for watching wild animals. We wish we had more time! The park closes admission at 3pm, so be sure to go earlier in the day and stay late.
When we arrived in Costa Rica, we hadn't planned to stay at Mapi's, but a gentleman on the plane told us about the beauty around the peninsula and recommended Mapi's, so we decided to try it out, thinking that we may only stay one night. With the money we would save by staying there, and because there was so much to do and see near there, we extended our trip an extra day and stayed at Mapi's for a total of 4 days.
The restaurant was great too! I recommend almost everything on that menu; the cook knows what they are doing and we were pleased with the food's local authenticity. The prices here were great too and the servers were very accommodating to our special requests. If you leave without having the fried plantains, you'll miss out!
We would come back to Costa Rica many times and each time, we would plan to stay at Mapi's. This would be a good place for a couple, a family with children, and even for backpackers (dividing the cost of a room among multiple people makes it comparable to the cost of a hostel--and you get a lot more value with your fridge, TV, and private room and private bathroom). So, go ahead and stay one night. Or four! Thank you, Mapi's!
