“Monkeys, Mangoes and Macaws at Mapi's!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 16, 2013

We had an awesome experience at Mapi's, my girls (10, 9yrs old), loved waking up to eating fresh mangoes from the trees, seeing the iguanas, the humming birds all on the property. I also took my elderly in laws who stayed on first floor cabins and were also very comfortable and entertained with all the fruits and wildlife on site... Nearby we saw monkeys on the trees, locals call them Congos. This is a bird watcher's paradise, I saw half a dozen species of parrots, macaws and toucans on the nearby beaches. The cleanliness of the rooms and friendly staff made us feel very comfortable like family. The wifi in the room was not working but it was available at the office but they were going to take care of it, they did explain this sometimes is an issue with the back units. While there, we drove to Mal Pais, surfing paradise, Montezuma a mellow town with roaring waves, unable to do the zip lines or see the waterfalls but definitely will go back for that... Mapi's is the first hotel and best place to stay when getting off the ferry when traveling at night. Overall, we can't wait to go back for more of Costa Rican adventures.

Room Tip: 2 Bedroom units available on second floor with hot water offering central air conditiioning

Glad to hear you and your family had a great time, we appreciate that you chose us for your accommodations... We did follow up with the WiFi not working at the back cabins and we're in the process of trying to find out of what can be done, to not continue having this issue, being we continue to fix it but some how, it keeps failing but with your observations, we will strive to improve ... We have it working in the 1-8 cabins and and office area, so there is always at least a back up plan for Wifi needs, we hope to see you again!

For the price, this place is great to have a home base to sleep and shower which is all we did here. We did not come to Paquera to lounge in our hotel, so this is exactly what we needed. We stayed a few nights here and were able to catch the local bus to the Curu Reserve and Motezuma right in front of the place. We were also able to walk 10 minutes to the 'town' of Paquera for dinner. It was safe, clean had great wi-fi, A/C and actually had a TV (not that we used it). We arrived here via ferry from Puntarenas and then take a $5 taxi to this place. Also, a 10 minute walk to Las Vegas, a great local spot with amazing ceviche. They only accept cash and the ladies who checked us in do not speak English, so be prepared to communicate the rate and how long you want to stay in Spanish. Finally, the place is surrounded by the BEST MANGOES you will ever have in your life.

Thank you for your observations and choosing our place to stay. We feel "basic, clean and safe" should be priority, bringing more savings, to our guests to spend on exploring and experiencing the Costa Rica culture! The mangoes and all the other fruits on the property (sour sop, sugar cane, bananas, papayas, water apples, noni, white and red guavas, coconuts and soon avocados) are all complimentary to our guests!

The taxi driver, who picked us up at the ferry port late at night, recommended and took us to this hotel. Despite a power cut, due to the bad storm that night, we found the hotel clean, comfortable and friendly. The noise of the discoteca 3km away kept me awake but apart from that, it was a good budget choice.

Thanks for taking the time to post your kind comments... we strive to keep our guests within their budgets, without sacrificing most conveniences other cabins, don't offer, so you can feel comfortable. We understand sometimes the noise of the discotheque can be heard from our place but the discotheque is now closed but we still took measures sealing all our doors and replaced curtains with dark/block out hoping to help with the insulation. We're located farthest from the city, as to dampen any other city noise but still close enough for walking distance.

I was lucky enough to stumble onto this hotel after getting in late on the last ferry. I had been traveling for 14 hours and was completely beat (Rivas Nicaragua to Nicoya in one day on the chicken buses). A short bus ride from the ferry dropped me off and the room was unbelievable. I dont recall the exact price but it was cheap. It was the cleanest, nicest place I stayed in my entire month trip and I cant wait to go back. AC & HOT SHOWERS! You DO NOT find that in Central America. I only stayed the one night and left that morning for Mal Pais so Im not sure what all there is to do around the hotel but im sure it was built in that location for a reason. The staff was very friendly and the place is truly great. I would reccomend it to anyone.

Thanks so much, for taking the time, for your kind comments! We hope you remember us in the future as to choose us again, to explore what our area has to offer... There's Curu Reserve, where you encounter all sorts of wildlife and trails ending at beaches. Curu Reserve, also offers snorkeling trips and boat rides to Tortuga Island. We have all sorts of beaches, Playa Organos, Playa Pochote, Playa Pajaros to name a couple, there's sports fishing, horse back riding, seasonal Whale and turtle watching, lots of bird watching, there's tours to different Islands, like San Lucas Island (Costa RIca's Alcatraz Island), kayaking, etc... Like you mentioned, the convenient bus stop at the corner, can take you to other nearby towns like Montezuma, Mal Pais, Cobano etc. and take you back, to Mapi's or Paquera Ferry. We offer in room massages and room service delivery from local Sodas/Restaurants. We hope you come again, to experience this part of Costa Rica, it's all Pura Vida!

After a long journey, and taking the last ferry at night from Puntarenas to Paquera, we were greeted with a friendly welcome and driven to the Cabinas. Upon arrival the staff were cuteous and professinal. The room was extremely clean, bug free and very spacious....all ensuring a good night´s sleep. The food in the restaurant was delicious, and we wished that we could have stayed longer in this tranquil place. Thank you.

My first thought was, wow, this place is well-kept and compared to other places of similar cost, it seemed much better. The landscaping will continue to make it look nicer and nicer as the plants mature. They have all sorts of fruit trees that are available to the guests to pick from when it is in season. The parking area is well lit at night--nice and safe for our car. The rooms were good-sized, including the shower which also had dispensers for shampoo and soap. Cable TV, free wi-fi (and also computers with Internet available in the office), and the clean and modern accommodations were just the beginning for us. We were so impressed with the staff! They helped us plan our activities (we wanted to avoid tourist traps) and gave us tips on saving some money where possible. Without them, our experience would have been much less enjoyable.

One of our favorite memories came from a connection the owners have with a man with a private boat for hire. He took us on an afternoon of snorkeling and fishing all along the shores of the nearby islands. The boat was small; 6 people would be crowded in it, but it was plenty big enough and fast enough for several hours of freedom to explore. I recommend that you schedule a few hours for this activity but to arrange it with the staff in advance, since the boat and driver may not be available.

Also, check out the Curu Reserve! This is worth the $10 it cost to get in, for sure. We saw many animals of the rainforest and even had a fawn eat from our hands before a monkey warmed up to us, eventually cuddling in our laps. The beach here was quite long and the trails throughout the property provided entertainment and education. There is a variety of vegetation and terrain in this small section of land, perfect for teaching kids and for watching wild animals. We wish we had more time! The park closes admission at 3pm, so be sure to go earlier in the day and stay late.

When we arrived in Costa Rica, we hadn't planned to stay at Mapi's, but a gentleman on the plane told us about the beauty around the peninsula and recommended Mapi's, so we decided to try it out, thinking that we may only stay one night. With the money we would save by staying there, and because there was so much to do and see near there, we extended our trip an extra day and stayed at Mapi's for a total of 4 days.

The restaurant was great too! I recommend almost everything on that menu; the cook knows what they are doing and we were pleased with the food's local authenticity. The prices here were great too and the servers were very accommodating to our special requests. If you leave without having the fried plantains, you'll miss out!

We would come back to Costa Rica many times and each time, we would plan to stay at Mapi's. This would be a good place for a couple, a family with children, and even for backpackers (dividing the cost of a room among multiple people makes it comparable to the cost of a hostel--and you get a lot more value with your fridge, TV, and private room and private bathroom). So, go ahead and stay one night. Or four! Thank you, Mapi's!
