“Walking distance to waterfront dining, kayaking, airport, shops, tour desk, guest kitchen, A/C”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 13, 2013

This was our third trip to Puerto Jimenez in the last four years, and we looked forward to trying out Captain Mark Corn's new inn.

Though this place is not on the water it is in a fenced tropical garden and that was a bonus because of the beautiful colorful plants and birdlife that guests may enjoy.

White stucco rooms with teak accents and nice baths both en suite or shared, this place is a welcome addition to the budget places to stay in Puerto Jimenez.

Captain Mark, apparently a well known expat sport fishing guide, has created a very nice neighborhood oasis for his sport fishing clients and other travelers.

One could sit for hours and watch the beautifully colored birds come in and feed on the papaya feeder by the hammock, sip cold drinks purchased in the town's supermarkets or next door in the convenient shop, cook one's own meals in the amazingly well appointed rancho kitichen, and marvel at the beautiful blooming plants depending on time of year.

At night we enjoyed the luxury of air conditioning but like most places we stay at in Puerto Jimenez there are no mosquito nets so take precautions accordingly. Dengue Fever is a serious threat that is spreading worldwide because travelers fail to apply repellant, get bit and show symptoms one to two weeks later which are often not identified as Dengue, and take it back to their home country where local mosquitos can spread it. See CDC on the web for more info.

Don't let this scare you away from the tropics but please do your part to halt the spread.

We hate mosquito nets anyway, so after being urged to do so by several locals (including our local Tico Dentist) we kept on mosquito repellant 24/7 as a precaution and were fine.

A friend from the US who lives in Costa Rica and was less dilligent with the repellant during his stay in Puerto Jimenez did come down with Dengue a week later when he returned to his Costa Rica home near Quepos.

Mark can arrange guided tours of the Osa Corcorvado National Park, the Golfo Dulce/Pacific Ocean, or kayaking the mangroves of the local area, and of he is course is a fishing expert of some reknown himself.

Walking distance to airport, waterfront, Golfito Ferry, Bus Station, and central Puerto Jimenez shops and sodas.

What do travelers do around Puerto Jimenez? Rent bikes and ride to secret beaches, rent kayaks and explore the mangroves, photograph the amazing sunrises and sunsets, take day trips to the remote end of the earth Matapalo area, bird watch, boat tours, fishing tours and more. For the third trip in a row to Costa Rica we got Dental work done while in Puerto Jimenez at the highly recommended dental offices of Dra. Melissa Morales.

At the time of our visit Singles began at $35 pp

Doubles $40 pp and up.

“Wonderful place to stay. Felt like home. Owner is great.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 23, 2013

We stayed 10 nights here and loved it.

Positives:
Our room was large (the deluxe room) and had air con,
The communal kitchen was very well stocked and clean (Fridge, gas stoves, pots, pans, utensils plates, etc.). It was nice to talk with other travellers here each night/day,
The bed was comfortable,
The owner was great, friendly and very helpful in organising tours etc.
You can visit Corcovado from here.
Good location - in town but not on the main streets so it's quiet. 5 min walk to the big supermarket and the bay. The airplanes were really a bother.

negatives:
The only thing that could be improved was the cleaning of the room. It only got cleaned once during our stay. No biggy though.
Be prepared to wake up early because noise travels well in the main part of the cabinas so when someone is awake and talking it feels like they are in your room yelling at you.

Neutrals:
The beach is 40min bike ride away. But we didn't like the beach very much anyway. It's a black sand beach so the sand is scorching hot and when we went the waves were rough and there were stinging jellyfish. We would choose to stay in the town again.

Room Tip: We chose the deluxe room because it was big.

“Terrific value for your money”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 21, 2013

Rooms: Good sized rooms that are pretty basic (no tv) but are very clean, have A/C, and include a dresser/wardrobe (we traveled through Costa Rica and you'd be surprised but many hotels don't even have basic furniture in the room to put your stuff or hang your clothes on at this price point). Bathrooms are also clean and include hot water. I'd recommend you request a room with an outdoor shower if available. Nice experience and no issues of privacy. We paid $40/night for two people in January 2013.

Owner: Mark is very hospitable and a great guy to chat with. Ask him for recommendations and he will happily oblige. He provides guests with a map of the area. We stayed 1 night before we headed out to Corcovado National Park for 2 nights and returned to Cabinas Tropicales for another 2 nights. Mark was kind enough to store our luggage for free while we were away.

Property: Mark has done a terrific job of turning the grounds into a small tropical paradise. Nice layout - when you walk through the front door, you come into the kitchen/dining area. Guests are allowed use of the fully equipped kitchen. There is room in the refrigerator and in the pantry for your groceries. He has flowers and plants running all along the perimeter of the property. Birds come to feed on fruit in the kitchen area.

Location: The hotel is literally right next to the regional airport so it's very convenient if you're flying Sansa or Nature Air. In terms of the main "town," it's about a 600 meter walk so not super close but a relatively short walk. But there are a couple of seafood restaurants that are close by.

Bottom line: While we were on a budget for this trip, we didn't want to sacrifice some basic luxuries, such as A/C and hot water. We were so happy we stayed at Cabinas Tropicales. It's probably the best value for your money in this area.

Room Tip: Request a room with an outdoor shower.

“Just like home...”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 12, 2013

We read about 'Cabinas Tropicales' and felt compelled to see for ourselves. Truth be told, it's better. The garden is amazing, the rooms are super tidy and roomy. The area is quiet and very down to earth. The kitchen is an absolute plus and meeting point! All that for 35-45$. i've spent some nights in some very shabby places for that kind of money. Plus the owner Marc is very friendly and forthcoming. we felt right at home from the beginning! So much, that we stayed longer than we anticipated! Absolutely recommended! Tnx Marc!

Room Tip: Deluxe for 45$...unbeatable!!!

“Home away from home”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 5, 2013

Great place to stay in Puerto Jim. Mark was helpful with organizing our trip, storing our baggage when we went into the park overnight, and a great host while we were there. The shared outdoor kitchen is well-equipped and has storage space for guests' food. Rooms large, clean, and bright, with quiet air conditioning. Lovely courtyard with hammocks and full of plants and birds. I'll stay there next time for sure.
