“One step before Nirvana”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 30, 2012

I frankly knew next to nothing about Blue Osa before going there two weeks ago. The planning for the trip was minimal. All I knew for sure is that I was going to Costa Rica and to a tropical retreat. My friend arranged the trip, and he flew down from New York to join me in South Florida which is an easy jump-off place to Central America. We couldn't book for all the days we wanted (note: don't do last minute planning or more accurately "non-planning") so we had to make other arrangements for the balance of our trip. By the way the country is not very large but extremely diverse, and if you have the time to explore it's definitely worthwhile.

For me Blue Osa stands out as the high point of the trip. Its somewhat remote location meant a short flight from San Jose, but the location means greater detachment from the outside world with all its stressful anxiety. Blue Osa is designed to slow you down and connect you more intimately with yourself, your co-habitants and nature. It's super safe. Locking doors seemed to be optional. A side trip to a cocoa farm was a learning experience in itself. You'll have trouble resisting the chocolate.

You can't always be guaranteed that others who come at the same time a you will be to your liking, but I was fortunate to be joined by many interesting and intelligent people, some of whom I hope to remain in contact. The staff, the services, the food (non-pareil) are as already described - superb. Go with confidence that you are being offered a high quality experience. Everything is well thought out, including such small ecological features as preserving water usage (e.g. don't flush paper in the toilets - something I experienced years ago in a kibbutz in Israel). So, go with an open mind and appreciate all that it is. You can go both inside and outside yourself as you please, but whatever state your in or whatever you're looking for I don't think you'll be disappointed.

You can also practice your language skills - Spanish naturally but also French with Marie, chef extraordinaire.

I hope this has helped you. As I write I go back to those memorable days there.

Room Tip: If you have a choice, ask what is available. There are several small buildings around the property...

Thank you so much for taking the time to submit a review for us here on Trip Advisor and for sharing all of your great tips.

Thank you for sharing the Chocolate tour. It is one of our guests favorites and the people love to eat.

It not only gives Blue Osa great pleasure to be able to provide people with such a unique experience from anything they have experienced before or places they have traveled to, but even more so, a place for the people to experience real peace and tranquility. I am so happy you found that at Blue Osa.

Many blessings and hope you can make it back again real soon.

“Yoga bliss”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 29, 2012

I think the best way to describe the vibe at Blue Osa is luxury sleep-away camp for adults (there's even a bell for meal-times, which BTW dinner is served as a group making it very easy for the solo travelers to meet new friends) I loved living in the jungle but like others mentioned it comes with occasional inconveniences, they really mean it when they say we are living with the wildlife, I shared my room with a handful of geckos every night - I miss their chirping :)
The staff is friendly and thoughtful, with both the big and little things (like dropping an umbrella off at your door during a pre-dinner rainstorm or making sure your porch light is turned on for you when you get back from having drinks with all the new friends you made at dinner). The positive energy at Blue Osa is practically tangible.
I opted for a personal yoga retreat (one on one classes twice a day) which really inspired me - my once a week practice is now daily. Laura is a phenomenal instructor, I didn't realize exactly how much she personalized our classes until returned to my home classes and found they kept missing poses that I really enjoyed/needed. I was initially a bit intimidated by having so much individual attention but Laura was compassionate, intuitive and light, she really made the time we spent together both motivating and fun. Now if only she would start streaming classes on YouTube (hint...hint, Aaron, Marie's cooking shouldn't get all the attention;)
While it isn't a five star resort, Jesus put the massage I had at the Four Seasons to shame - do NOT miss the opportunity, the man has magic hands. Also, spend some time with Feo, he is incredibly knowledgable about the local flora and fauna.
And yes Marie's cooking is phenomenal and the location is breathtaking... And there are lots of fun excursions (zip-lining, rappelling, biking, hiking) if you're feeling the need for some adventure. Can't wait to plan a second visit!

Room Tip: I loved my room (11 - Namaste), it was tucked away and super quiet (well, except for the ocean, howl...

Thank you so much for taking the time to write your review and in sharing your experiences. As an owner, in reading your review I was reminded what it is really like to come as a guest and as a solo traveler. Thank you for pointing out of all the little details our guests experience here.

I am so happy you got to experience Laura, our Costa Rica Yoga Teacher. She was such a gem of a find and we are lucky that she is able to come and offer her services here.

I so look forward to seeing you again and hearing that wonderful laugh of yours.

Many blessings

“Truly a magnificent place”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 11, 2012

Blue Osa is one of the most beautiful resorts I have been to. You will find the ground immaculate, there is wildlife galore, the views of the beach and the jungle are out of this world. The staff (Especially the chef, Marie) will amaze you with their hospitality and outstanding service. I could write an entire review on just the food, everything is fresh, homemade & delicious. I agree with the rest of the reviews, this isn't a place for you if you are looking for 5 star pampered vacation. Although the spa treatments left me feeling MORE than pampered!

“Tranquility and Focus”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 7, 2012

Hard to beat the tranquility of Blue Osa along with the VERY personal service of its terrific staff as well as its owner, Aaron Star. This is NOT a place for you if you want Ritz Carlton rooms (e.g., there is no AC) but it IS THE PLACE to be for a centerdness to the land and the ocean in a space that provides FIRST CLASS meals, opportunities for yoga and spa services, as well as a VERY nice lap pool. If you would like more info about the owner, visit a recent article at

“Fab- just what I wanted/needed”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 27, 2012

The measure of a place is: would you go back, at full price? IN A FLASH!
I'd probably be repeating what most have written- beautiful location, lovely architecture, ridiculously amazing food, thoughtful and generous staff... So READ them. Even the minor kvetching, while at times accurate, is part of what you need to know.

This is not a Diva Boutique Resort - and you know who you are - so don't come here looking for that. Do go if you want to relax, refresh and indulge in the world around you.
