“Rainforest Cabinas”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 26, 2012

We stayed in one of their cabinas nestled in the rainforest, so enjoyable! We had a smallish kitchen (sparcely equipped but they staff was eager to assist with glasses and such/so forth). Each bedroom had a/c which was heavenly so deep in the humid rainforest. The grounds were absolutely stunning, plentiful and well maintained plantings. Nice pool area with honor bar and slightly obscured ocean view (a bit of a walk to the pool and view). My package included the room, dinner and breakfast which was an absolute deal considering the location. Dinner (in the package) offered 2-3 options for fish, chicken, pasta etc. Breakfast was plentiful, fresh fruit, gallo pinto, fresh juices, wonderful coffee. A wonderful surprise esp. for the value, cabinas, view. A good spot enroute to locations north and south or just enjoy the local beaches!

Hotel has nice condos. Very friendly staff and a good restaurant. However, the beds are very poor. We were with several people and none of them had a good sleep. That's a pity since the rest of the hotel is good.

The shower curtain had black mold on it and stunk. The queen sized mattress was actually a double sized mattress which also stunk of mold, mildew and sweat. The shower barely had any water. The toilet moved when you sat on it. They leave unwrapped & used soap bars in the bathroom. The pool bar is an "honor" bar wherein the surfers charge their drinks to everyone else's room. The pool was cloudy. We were glad for the air conditioning, however, had to turn it off because the room stunk so bad, wherein we died of the heat because the room doesn't catch the ocean breezes. Can't see the ocean. The hotel could have cared less about the issues. DO NOT STAY AT THIS HOTEL! Our friends said the road noise kept them up.

Room Tip: There are rooms up higher on the hill, facing the ocean, but without ocean views, which may be coole...

Being nature lovers and not lovers of crowds or excess, we certainly wanted to avoid the mainstream beach resorts of the Jaco area. Therefore, we stayed far south of there in this lovely hotel. There are many choices along the Pacific highway stretch, and I'm sure that some of those places are quite nice, but overall the value at HVG was great for what we received: a spacious casita with very comfortable beds and A/C, hot water, and a great big porch for relaxing. Additionally, there is a very nice pool here and an open bar right at the pool, and meals are served right on the property as well in a lovely open air dining area.

Of course the main reason my husband and I stayed here for two nights during our honeymoon was because of access to the beach. Playa Tortuga is beautiful, quiet, AMAZING! There is also a small beach to the North a couple of km that was fabulous and very private. If you like beach caves and awesome views, you can find those things at both beaches mentioned above. We love birdwatching also, and the birdwatching for the entire area was muy, muy bueno. Also, there were very cool lizards, monkeys, and spiders all around!

Two more great things: We traveled south a few km to where the Osa Peninsula started to expand out to the West. On the West side of the road and past a large open air restaurant was a small joint called Remy's Ceviche - she was having a new sign put up as we were eating there so I don't know if it will read exactly the same. There are many places to get good, fresh ceviche around but hers was fantastic. Not to mention she had amazing ice cream treats there as well! There's a shaded outdoor eating area there when you can enjoy the cuisine if you like.

The second great surprise was that on Saturday mornings at Hotel Villas Gaia, nearby artists from the local indian tribe come and sell their art. The piece we bought was beautiful, and we were so happy to buy our one Costa Rican souvenir from an actual native person who worked so diligently to create it. It now proudly stands as a centerpiece in our home to represent our amazing honeymoon in CR. At the airport, we saw similar art pieces made by the same woman and marked up 2-3 times what we paid at HVG!!!

Room Tip: If given an option, I would choose a room closer to the pool and ocean. The rooms near the highway...

We found this hotel by accident on a rainy September night when we were driving the southern highway. We were traveling in the off season with no reservations and we did not know where we might stay. We saw the sign up on the hill through the rain and since our choices seemed slim we drove up the hill and they were open. The excitement was that the rate included dinner and breakfast! While walking to our room the most beautiful aroma rose around me of the ylang ylang (sorry if misspelled here) I would loved to have taken that home with me...It was wonderful. The rooms are individual cabins with a front porch that give you that jungle safari feeling. Just what I had hoped to find on our trip. The room was comfortable and was such a great experience. The rain had stopped and we walked up to the pool. Even in the dark the pool and the outdoor bar area was terrific. The next morning after breakfast I walked up to the pool and to my amazement the view of the ocean was gorgeous. It is not a real close up view, but expansive and there is a trail that you can walk down to the beach. It was beautiful and tranquil there. The pool was a bit nipy, but it had just rained the night before and it was early morning...The food in the restaurant was delicious and they have a wide variety of different choices. Presentation of the food is terrific. It would be better if the hotel was not above the road. Noise travels up, but we were the first cabin after the restaurant and I honestly did not hear the road from our room. You could hear the road at the restaurant, but it did not bother me. I would stay here again and tell others.

Room Tip: I did not know there were rooms with a view until the next day. I would have asked for that type of...

Stayed 4 nights at Villas Gaia with 5 friends and loved every minute of it!!!!

It's true, the highway is unfortunately close to the hotel and you can hear trucks going by, but with the sounds of the jungle all around, it is very easy to tune it out. The grounds here are spectacular and it was a perfect place for us to use as home base while we explored the Osa region a bit.

We had requested casitas up on the hill by the pool, based on reviews we had read on TA, and they were fantastic. Very simple - just all we needed: beds and a shower, with a great patio to drink some wine and listen to the jungle which is at your fingertips here.

I think there are 14 casitas around the property, but they are all nestled in and we didn't see much of other guests except occasionally around the pool or in the dining room.

Breakfast is included, and it was great - eggs, gallo pinto, fruit, juice & coffee. The right way to start the day! We also ate dinner here every night and were never disappointed - the food is amazing.

Edgar & staff were very helpful arranging tours for us and attending to our general comfort.

The hacienda near the pool has comfy chairs & sofas to lounge around in - one of our friends went up there early one morning and saw some capuchin monkeys playing in the trees! We also saw toucans around the pool area, heard howler monkeys every day and saw tonnes of lizards and beautiful butterflies, and geckos all over the place. Total paradise. They have a fridge here with beer & soft drinks that you can help yourself to on an honour system, and between 5 & 6 every night there is a bartender who will make you delicious cocktails!

The pool is great for cooling off in, with awesome views of the coast, and it's a great place to watch the sun set too.

The front desk provided towels to use at the pool. This was helpful, because we quickly learned that things do not dry out quickly in the jungle!!

Villas Gaia was a perfectly relaxing place to stay, hang out and eat at! I would go back in a heartbeat and highly recommend it.

Room Tip: Ask for the casitas up by the pool - less noise from the highway here.

Villas Gaia could be a fantastic place to stay, but the nearby "highway" ruins a part of the charm of this hotel, especialy in the restaurant or when you stay in a room situated on the road side. The villa we stayed in was very large, with a nice little terrace and a jungle view. One day, we had a large group of monkeys visiting... A thrilling experience for our 18 months old daughter. The garden trail organised by the hotel was nice, altough we didnt see much wildlife. Astonishing view on the ocean from the pool. The food served in the restaurant was great. About the staff, well, they didnt seem very intrested in the guests... Not far from the hotel, you have a narrow dirtroad leading to Tortuga Beach, one of the most beautiful beaches we ever saw. About the shower, one time they ran out of hot water, but in generaly no complains.
