“Amazing place”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 20, 2014

The lodge is located on Carate beach, next to Corcovado National Park.
The place is absolutely beautiful with large sand beaches, a colored garden and the proximity of the jungle.
All the site has been designed by Marcus. The wooden bungalows are really nice and comfortable, especially the oudoor showers with outstanding views.
You can practice yoga, enjoy the beaches and the waves (Bodyboard, surf...), walk on some trails of the lodge, or simply relax.
Last but not least, the food is delicious (made of local fruits and vegetales) and the team is absolutely pleasant.
You must stop there either if you want to visit Corcovado National Park or just to enjoy the peacefulness of the place.

Thanks for your review! As you say, we are located next to Corcovado National Park, making us a great stop off point before and after your big hike. There is no better place to get your boots off and reflect on your time whilst swinging in one of our many hammocks throughout the property. Thank you for coming and we hope to see you again!

Go back to your childhood... How many of you built tents out of blankets or cardboard boxes and now you dream of feeling young again. You will get the same exhilaration as you did in your youth. We stayed in the Mango Cabin which is luxurious in every way imaginable. The view is breathtaking with Macaws flying around and you can hear the Pacific breathing in and out. Completely relaxing!! I thoroughly enjoyed the private outdoor shower with fresh water. The hosts Gabby and Marcus are extremely interesting as they thoroughly love their piece of paradise and ask Marcus to tell you of his experience building this sustainable eco lodge that leaves little to no footprint. Coco prepares 5 star meals that compare or are better than 5 star restaurants.
Take a hike, sample the home grown food, unplug... Just do it.. It's a one in a lifetime chance to feel like a kid again with no worries just pure bliss.
It is worth the drive and you will have this memory for a lifetime.
Thanks for sharing your Piece of Paradise with travelers :) We will be back again, Paul and Dawn

This review is long overdue but not because of the quality of our time at Finca Exotica. We traveled to this incredible, singular, and stunning lodge in April with our two boys ages 6 and 9. Instantaneously it became home, even though it is worlds apart from New York City where we live.

Words really defy our experience. The grounds are both stunning and fascinating - all manner of fruits and plants grow here that we ate time and again, in delicious and unexpected combinations, during our meals. The design of Casa Grande and its furnishings - all of it done by former architect and owner Markus - ends up yielding this supremely elegant and alluring lounge in the tropics. The thatched-roof casitas are simple by design, but between them and the riches delivered by Casa Grande, the grounds, and then the incredible natural surroundings ... you have everything you could possibly want and more than you could possibly imagine.

A few shout outs:

Gaby is a gorgeous, wonderful, warm and terrific host who strikes that perfect balance of attention and remove. She provided everything we needed but also left us alone as much as we needed, too. No cloying attention. Perfect.

Markus is clearly the visionary behind the place and that vision is unique. I still can't come up with words to describe that Casa Grande, but it's beautifully appointed and with a great vibe. He's got discriminating taste and it shows - from the menus, to the presentation of the food, to that cocktail table made out of a ship's rudder, to any other detail you can think of. At the end of the day, Markus is an artist in his own right and his creation (those hammocks that our kids fell asleep on every night!) is wonderful.

Coco was the cook when we were there - his cross-cultural cooking was totally unexpected in the Costa Rican jungle ... and delicious. We had crispy-good preparations of local fish, curries made with Finca Exotica coconuts, salads from a crazy plant that grows on the grounds, and the best sandwiches for hiking, ever (I think Thomas made those - he's the bomb, too). Since our kids were a little intimidated by some of the intense and unusual flavors sometimes, the team amenably delivered special requests when/as needed. Thank you!

Jody gave a terrific tour of the garden and introduced us to the Ylang Ylang, wild asparagus, Magic Fruit, Star Fruit, and any other number of edibles on the property. Plus, she lead an amazing yoga class from probably the best Yoga perch I've ever downward-dogged on - amazing.

Finally, a shout out of the attractions if you will - touring Corcovado National Park is a must. The walk is long to the park's entrance, but it's a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Also, the kayaking trip offered through the lodge is INCREDIBLE. It was the last thing we did and the memory of slicing our paddles through the mangroves as the sun set (and amidst all those birds) will stick with us forever! The conversations at Finca Exotica's dining room table - with people of all ages, nationalities and experiences - were always warm, open, and enjoyable. Just hanging out at the lodge, swinging in the hammocks by the sea, catching hermit crabs on the beach or hiking on its grounds delivered sweet rescue. I can't say enough good things about this place and the memories it yielded are as precious as they come.

Thank you, Gaby, Markus, Coco, Thomas, Jody, and the whole team - you rocked it (on par with the incredible Costa Rican singer songwriter who performed each night that we were there)! You helped to create an unforgettable time for all of us. Hugs - Henry, Beth, Ben and Gabe

Room Tip: We stayed in Ylang Ylang, which was perfect for us. It was an easy walk from the beach, close to Ca...

Thanks Beth and family!! You are right, New York and Carate are miles apart but you settled right in and becamse part of our family here in the jungle very quickly! Finca Exotica is a great place to bring the kids because of all of the ´cool´ animals to see, as well as the numerous activities on and around site. It was great fun watching your kids take everything in! Come back soon, you are always welcome!

There are not enough superlatives for Finca Exotica. All aspects of our stay there were exceptional. The surroundings are beautiful, the architecture is simple and elegant, and above all is the helpful and friendly staff. They say Costa Ricans are among the happiest people on Earth. I think this may be doubly true of the staff at Finca Exotica.

A few tips: Purchase the meal plan. There are few alternatives for food in the area, and Finca's meals are made with fresh ingredients grown there on the farm and expertly prepared by talented and creative chefs. Check to see where your accommodation will be located. It could be in the garden which is flat, or on the side of the mountain which requires a strenuous hike. You need to be physically fit for this hike. You will find yourself showering in your private outdoor shower after hikes back to your cabin. This is quite refreshing and fun. In return for the uphill hike, you will be rewarded with a private retreat with a lovely view.

I am a surfer, but my girlfriend and I chose Finca Exotica for its charms that include its proximity to Corcovado National Park, which we toured with a private guide arranged by Finca. However, Playa Carate is a surfer's paradise that I had never heard of. Finca offers Boogie boards and fins and a soft top board, but if you are a serious surfer you will want a 'real' board to fully enjoy the waves at Carate. I was able to borrow a board from a fellow guest, who rented it from Jimenez. Carate offers very fun and consistent beach break as well as something priceless: zero crowds. I surfed in the mornings with no one else out in the water and no one on the beach. I would choose to visit Playa Carate again for its fun surf alone.

When you combine the spectacular location, beautiful grounds, friendly staff and service, many activities I have not even mentioned, with everything arranged by the very competent and Friendly staff, as well as the isolated surf, Finca Exotica is a great choice for your stay in Osa.

Room Tip: Some cabins are located up a mountain. Reaching these cabins requires a strenuous hike. The reward i...

Thank you very much for taking the time to write this review! You are right, very little people know what a good surf there can be right in front of Finca Exotica! Carate is a magical place to ride the waves, whilst watching scarlet macaws and pelicans fly overhead, and dolphins and whales jump amongst the waves in the distance. An experience that all remember for life..... come back soon!

DAD: This past April my family traveled to Fina Exotica and had the best time. The place was simply wonderful. Coco the chef served great meals and Marcus and Gabrielle made us feel at home. It is the jungle, so you must have a sense of adventure, but as my 10 year old said, "This place is in the jungle, but still feels like home."
The other highlight was all the wild life, Halloween crabs, monkeys, birds, snakes, insects, lizards, anteaters and the amazing views and crashing surf. The morning yoga was also terrific and I was sad when we had to leave. If your family likes adventure and getting away, this is a perfect place.
MOM: Didn't want to leave. It took a night to get used to sleeping exposed to the wilderness but then fell in love with all the sounds of nature. Looked forward to yoga with Jodi and the delicious afternoon teas. We really enjoyed Phoebes presentation on sea turtles and her garden tour.
Son 12: Everybody there was so friendly to show us around and it immediately made us feel at home. The food was so amazing and fresh I looked forward to the meals. The wildlife was awesome, and you could see all of it up close. The garden tour was great, and all of the plants they had were really cool. I really really hope I can go back there some day.
Son 10: Wild life was the best! We were living right in the jungle! Everyone was so nice.
Son 8: Wild life awesome! Everyone was nice! Great food and snacks!

I came to have an immersion in nature and wildlife and this did not disappoint. Oh look, the scarlet macaws are circling my cabana, and this is one of the few places in the world that their populations are increasing. We were in "Mango" and slept to the roar of the ocean between two hillsides of rainforest. To get the most out of this place I think one should really be prepared to do some vigorous hikes, tolerate a few bug bites, and take a one-temperature shower. Then prepare yourself for the best food in Costa Rica - I'm not even kidding. It was great to meet up for meals at Casa Grande for thoughtfully prepared meals and visit with the others about the days adventures. This place challenged me to let go of my life back home and within a couple hours I was "in the rainforest". When I was weary I grabbed some drinks and slung a hammock between a couple of palms on the one of the most beautiful beaches I have been- completely alone; well me and the monkeys.

Room Tip: We had mango-up the hill. This was right for us, romantic and isolated with a fantastic view and oce...
