“sublime!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 26, 2009

I'm also very surprised to hear that the owners were anything but amazing. We stayed four nights, and it was the highlight of our trip. The buildings and grounds are incredible, the food was great, yoga in the morning was sublime, ALL the staff were friendly and helpful..... loved it!!!!!!
But, I suppose if you don't like monkeys in the trees around your place, or you don't want an outside bath with mosaic tiled sink, or you'd rather not share conversation at meals with other guests - I suppose this may not be the place for you.

My husband and I absolutely loved this place and were shocked to see such negative comments about Nico and Mark. Not only does Cabo Matapalo seem to have adventure lurking around every corner but Nico (female owner) recommended plenty of hiking, surfing, and sight seeing adventures that more than exceeded our expectations! And the food! Simply divine coming from a New York food snob. The only reason I can see someone complain is if they are not open to a true natural experience, as the cabinas are open air so you hear the sounds of the rainforest and are truly one with nature. For us, this was a welcomed return to our roots. We absolutely loved Ojo Del Mar and highly recommend it.

For a long time I had planned a trip to the Peninsula Osa, many friends had told me about this wonderful place. With lots of information from the tripadvisor forum and several guide books we knew, more or less, what we where in for.

Most parts of the road were ok, to end the number of potholes increased. We stopped several times and enjoyed the view of the ocean.

The hotel is located next to the ocean and the garden is beautiful. A lot of animals pass through the property. We had chosen Ojo del Mar because it had been recommended to us and the rates seemed fair. Now I know that it is overpriced! The cabinas are advertised as rustic with nice photos on their website. The ceiling of our cabina was made of corrugated plastic sheets, it looks very different on the photos.

From the start on we noticed that the owners, Nico and Mark, didn't seem very happy. Mark was always complaining about tourists, surfers, ... Being tourists that made us feel rather uncomfortable!
When we asked them about suggestions for our day activities they surprised us with their absence of knowledge of Osa and Costa Rica. They even gave us some wrong information and were very unresponsive to our needs!

The meals were prepared with care and attention, seemed like the owners enjoyed cooking. To our disappointment the meals tasted bland, it seemed like they were experimenting!

We were served the worst pinto that we ever ate in a restaurant in Costa Rica! They should let a Costa Rican prepare the traditional food!

As a result we ate several times in Puerto Jimenez. There are rustic places that serve great seafood for less than half the price.

  • Liked — The location of the hotel in the jungle and next to the beach is perfect!
  • Disliked — The owners, the rude attitude of the owners and the bad food!

We agree with all the reviews which describe this place as a wonderful experience 'getting back to nature'.

The cabinas are open to the rainforest and you sleep under mosquito nets with the sound of the forest around you. The food was excellent every evening. You need to remember to take a torch as there's no electricity in the cabinas. The shower is a hose pipe from a tree which initially looked a bit rustic ! but it was great fun.

Very surprised to read the reviews commenting the owners were unpleasant. We found them delightful and very accomodating!

All in all our stay at Osa Del Mar was a wonderful experience for our family.

  • Liked — Open air cabinas in the middle of the rain forest
  • Disliked — It gpt a bit wet in the heavy rain!

My favorite part of my 2 week trip to Costa Rica despite the ornery owners. The location is off the beaten track. The vision for the place is right on...sustainable living, healthy food, beautiful surroundings
...too bad the owners are rude and unpleasant. If you can put up with their unfriendly attitudes, then you will have a very nice stay.

Even if the location is really great we would not recommend staying here. The owners are far from friendly and make you feel rather uncomfortable. And the organization is really poor.
Somehow our reservation didn’t work out and we had to sleep in a tent. The next day we asked the owner if she could organize a lesson for surfing and of course it didn’t work.
The breakfast was great (thank you Robert!).
So if you just want to surf, have a great breakfast and you are not bothered by an awkward feeling due to the owners it is a decent place to stay.
Just make sure that you confirm your reservation twice, as once is not enough.
