We had a wonderful time at Tiskita. We booked our tour (which also included Arenal and Monteverde) through CR Connection/ CR Sun Tours who suggested we go there. We arrived from San Jose by small domestic plane to Tiskita's private airstrip (grass) and both flights coming and going were beautiful. It's a wonderful way to see the countryside.
We were met at the strip by Lizbeth Aspinall(owner), a staff member and a family of five that was leaving on the plane we came in on. It was the warm send off of friends and we were happy to share it.
Our cabin (#8) was spotless and comfortable. It was the furthest away from the lodge (we think) so we had a little hike to get to our meals. It was very private since there was no one in the ajoining room. I couldn't help but think how perfect these cabins are for a family.
The room had lamps on both sides of the bed so we could read, and had electricity at all times.
The bathroom was huge, open air (high walls) and gorgeous. Suprisingly good water pressure and hot water. All their water is filtered so you can drink their tap water if you choose. I did a lot of hand washing and there were clotheslines with pins by the porch.
The rooms are screened in, so there weren't any buggy interlopers worth mentioning.
The porch had hammocks, comfy chairs and an ocean view. It was hard to get to breakfast on time for all the hummingbirds since the cabin is surrounded with tropical bushes. There was also a posse of little brown bats who cool off in the afternoon on the OUTSIDE of the screens which are a way up due to the high ceilings. They were cute and I enjoyed their company. They, of course, were gone all night.
There were about 8 other people staying at the Lodge when we were there and they were friendly and interesting- nature lovers all. We all enjoyed hearing about each other's adventures and sightings at the meals (included) which are served family style. The food was good and hearty which was important for all the hiking we did. The fruit juices available all day and at meals were out of this world, and there was always good coffee. There is an honor bar for sodas, cocktails (mix yourself), and beer.
The pool was great for cooling off and watching the birds and wildlife in a lazy way. It felt so good!
The most thrilling part of Tiskita are the trails. You are in the rainforest and it feels deep. You can lose yourself but you can't get lost. The Owners cut the trails themselves and they range from of deep dark rainforest to open orchard. The trails still have a wildness about them so you feel adventurous-- you are adventurous-- never like you're in a park. It's so beautiful and we saw so much, including but not limited to:
Anteaters, Spider Monkeys, Howler Monkeys, White Faced Monkeys, Coatis, Agoutis, Toucans, Macaws, Hummingbirds, Blue Morpho Butterflies, a crocodile, Sloths, Black Headed Trogons, Manakins, hawks, iguanas, lizards, vultures, frogs etc.
We took a horseback ride along the beautiful beach and up a mountain which I highly recommend, and others took a hike with a birding expert which they enjoyed. The owner Peter Aspinall, gave a tour of his orchard during which he picked some of the exotic fruits for us to try. He tells great stories, and we learned a lot about fruit and Costa Rican culture from him during the walk at dinner.
We were there three nights which was enough, but 5 would have been perfect. We happened to have perfect weather, it only rained twice, once at night and once during breakfast -we were lucky. If it had rained more (it rains hard) we would have missed out on something.
The owners are wonderful and passionate about their lodge and their surroundings. Their care shows in every aspect of this incredible place. We were truly sorry to have to leave and will definitely go back. We had our own emotional goodbye at the airstrip and we really felt lucky to have had the experience we did.
